I need to stop noseriding.. and here's why

  • In my efforts to noseride as much as possible, Iv'e thrown other aspects of longboarding to the side. After watching the flow of the surfers during the cuervo classic malibu longboard championship, it's time I get to the bottom of it!
    This is also the day after the big hurricane fiona day. Good longboarding left overs

    Noseriding was originally done to maintain trim speed on the wave and was never supposed to be a posing maneuver. A good bottom turn, trim and then drop knee cutback is all you need for great style.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад +3

      Yes! However, in my mind you need a good bottom turn, drop knee cut back, AND a hang 10 for great style😂

    And that sweet spot in the middle for trim speed! Turn on the tail , trim from the middle.

    Another great video Brian. I surf in a very well known longboard spot in Orange County SoCal. The wave and crowds forces you to slow down with lots of turns to keep you in the critical section. I've grown to love drop knees and reverse drop knees/cross step turns. As a bonus, these types of turns lend themself to a very natural switch stance. Hit me up if you are every in SoCal and I'll hook a Liverpool brother up. YNWA

    Great Video! The turns are looking really nice! One drill that I really like to do is to do half a cross-step, then attempt to trim as long as possible in that position. It helps increase stability to and from the tip, would definitely recommend trying it out. Keep up the great work.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад

      yes that half cross step drill is excellent! I may need to do that a few times to start the session. It's also great for people who have never cross stepped before.. gets you used to that position which is key

    Brian, great video! I focus on trying to link a bottom turn and a top turn/cutback on every ride. It's funny-sometimes I tell myself I want to focus on trying to nose ride too on each wave, but it is hard to stop the habits of focusing on turns. It's the opposite of what you said. Keep the videos coming! At 3:54, the backstep to the turn seemed to set you up well for your nose ride by stalling you and your board.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  2 года назад

      haha yup you're the opposite! Linking the turns is a great way to approach the wave I think. We just need to both work on the other haha

  • @jameso8418
    @jameso8418 Год назад +1

    I think the more tail approach to turn, but try to catch a high line so you don't fade off top out the wave. If you feel loss of speed a hang five vs hang ten is easier to get back onto tail to surf, or even cut back. Keep weight forward w step if wave slows down.... Then once you drop into next section you do it all over again. Cut back harder on the tail, k

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Год назад +1

      I totally agree about hitting that tail harder. In fact I think that's currently my main set back is I'm not putting enough weight on that tail and not lifting the nose out enough. Can't wait for the next session.. I'm gonna stomp on that thing haha!

    • @jameso8418
      @jameso8418 Год назад

      @@LongboardSessions I often act as if I'm taking off on a short board - in stance... So naturally your back foot is on the tail to, yes, keep the nose up enough.... on steeper wave's on a longboard I'll angle a bit on take offs, leg's bent moderately, lean on the tail as you do your bottom turn ( compressed. ), and as you do your top turn you'll be more upright, and then compress again in top to bottom..... Then when wave flattens out shuffle back, or side step back again on tail and carve a hard cut back. Play w it. Hanging five on occasion is safer than trying to hang ten on a fast wave. My best surfing happens when I'm relaxed. I'll get wave after wave if I'm relaxed. Go w the flow! You'll create your own style and feel as to what's best for you.
      BTW - I love your vid's! Your doin good! You'll get better in time out n the water. Sometimes when it's really lined up I'll just try to just get longer ride's and not try trick's. It's nice to have a moment......

    • @jameso8418
      @jameso8418 Год назад

      @@LongboardSessions step more on the tail, and lean weight a bit into a bottom turn according to the wave.... In weaker surf you can goose it!🤩on hollow bigger wave's be a bit less forceful.

    Thx again for this vid! OT: I was just watching Longboard world competition. Noticed that they paddle very "agressively" when they catch a wave. Almost flat on the board, and they stick their arms, which are 90 degrees, not as far as possible. I surf in the nethelands, we do not have often quality waves. Paddeling is a big thing here, otherwise you will not catch a wave here.

    • @LongboardSessions
      @LongboardSessions  Год назад +1

      Yes I noticed that too! For good paddling form, you want your head and chest up high off the board. But sometimes when you want that extra power you can drop your chest that way you can dig your arm extra deep into the water. That's basically what theyre doing

    • @adamfrankel358

      I agree with NAP Mexico! Cash in some speed by going down the wave to set up for a bottom turn to get you up the wave for the turn. Also, do it earlier than you’re doing it in the video to stay closer to the pocket.

    Ya nice nose rides! I've been longboarding since I was 11. I'm almost 12 i mean 47. Just trying to think of how 2 turn and all I can think of is smooth water.🙂 depending on the wave im usually in the middle of my 10'0 and just relaxing skipping the bottom turn and staying high then take some steps back as im dropping in to a steeper section lowering center of gravity gaining speed then step up go high step back as approaching shoulder put weight on back foot and guide with front foot head leads body follows so look where your going then transition back to front foot. Depending on wave your either heading for white water and have to bank off or your heading for bottom and have to turn. So u pivot off of tail then walk to nose. If I just breath deep and look closely at the waves the rest is just flow, reaction without thought. Waves rides smiles all happen in a trance on those classicdays. 🤙

    Nice! ...you will also find that your nose rides will get far better, as cut backs and big gouging turns can 1) be used to put you in the pocket, and 2) to slow you and keep you from running off onto the shoulder (which forces you to loose the wave or come off the nose. --- bottomline turns will keep you in that critical section of the wave. More FUN!
