The part where the girl looks at her grandfather and he symbolically lets go of the newspaper and realises that he's doomed her and cant find his words literally made me cry. The middle aged people alive are too busy with their lives to do anything. But the generation thats about to pass on is just waking up to the horror they've left behind and realising they've been lied to their entire lives and are now too old to help. It's terribly sad. It was a beautifully animated, terribly sad moment. Fuck.

"Oh why did I have to touch this pipe..." the frustration with getting no where and seemingly making things worse when all you did was try to fix it just boils within her, lots of people can relate to that moment... It feels like there's no fix or whatever we do makes things worse, so why even bother trying?
Genius animation, so much to unpack and interpret from all sides.

And it's because many "environmental groups" (like Greenpeace, PETA...) prefer to focus on insignificant things rather than promote actual solutions. Nuclear power produces no CO2, GMOs can help reduce land surface devoted to agriculture, plastic straws are not important compared tp the rest of trash and so on etc.

A lot of people in the comments say "She made it worse" but I don't think they're seeing the whole picture.
She thought she had control over what was happening, yet was blind to the larger picture where she in fact, had no say in the outcome. They were flooding, not because of the pipes, but because of the rising water outside. She was essentially trapped with people claiming everything is alright, and in her attempt to 'fix' an unfixable problem, she was left blaming herself, only to later realize the actual problem at hand once she was out.
It was no-one's fault, but the ignorance over the problem at hand. They just assumed everything was alright, when in fact, they were being lied to by the media (Hence the news paper claiming everything is okay) and the older generation only realized when it was just too late to build a boat and get out.
All the family cared about was consuming(Literally), and pretending everything is okay despite the obvious. They ignored the girl entirely and essentially ignored the huge problems at hand, only to continue ignoring them even after they were about to drown. It was up to the young girl to realize the issue and attempt to find a solution.
I feel bad for her because she had a lack of guidance from her peers, all because they were too blind to care about real issues. They instead justified the issue or downplayed it until it got awful.
A lot of things are like this. Mental health and global warming are two I can think of that people continue to ignore the obvious damages, only for them to realize when it's too late, or straight up pretend until the last moments that it's not a problem.

I've watched this masterpiece multiple times and I think the whole meaning of it is pretty obvious now. It's about global warming, or at least the effects older generations have had on the health of the planet/climate.
They want to continue to ignore the problem, telling the girl to ignore it as well and how she's being disrespectful and should just join them in their feast instead of acknowledging the problem at hand. I think the younger brother can signify the newest generation, they're still children and they simply want to play but even *they* can see the changes that are going on in the world. The grandfather represents the older generation and how some of them are finally realizing how bad things have become. If you have captions on (and don't speak french) the newspaper says "Everything is alright" as it falls into the water and he looks dismayed up at his granddaughter. You can see the daughter lock eyes with him and begin to cry, but her eyebrows furrow (angrily? resentfully? hard to tell) as if signaling the younger generation's frustrations and grief over inheriting these problems. Almost like she's silently telling him "You let it get this bad."/"You let this happen." In the attic, you can notice the grandfather's expression as he holds the grandson and how the parents are the only ones who remain blissfully unaware of the situation.
This entire thing is an absolute masterpiece. The dialogue, writing, expressions and artwork are so incredibly impressive and *expressive* its amazing. This is hands down one of my favorite animations from gobelins and one of the reasons I dream about going to this school.

I have 3 things to say about this.
The ending song is heavily based of the melody in Nausica Valley Of The Wind.
The story is about what the world has become, and everything we are doing wrong.
And the girl not only is taking part as an activist, is strongly relatable in mid teens. You are only annoyed because people refer you to teenager stereotypes, when you promise not to. It annoys all of us, so parents, stop ruining our childhood by conparing our mood swings with 'shes going through her teenage years, its natural' it pisses us off. We are blamed for everything due to our age and nearly being a teenager, thats why we are angry,

That last part, when the girl opens her window..
She’s concerned about her family’s issues and when she opens the window for a breath of air (like how she grows up or prepares to leave the nest), she realized that the issue goes onto a much larger scale. There is nowhere to go, because the past generation ignored it and would not fix it.

  • @SynisterJeff
    @SynisterJeff 3 года назад +1012

I can relate to the girl so well. She is the only one noticing a problem, and wishes to fix it. But it's a problem she cannot fix on her own. And when she tries, the problem only gets worse, while her parents and grandfather could help, they only continue about focusing on their immediate wants and needs, even though it is a problem that affects everyone. Even when the problem is obvious, the parents make up excuses such as, "We finally have a pool!"
It's only in the last moments after irreversible damage has been done, that the grandfather, who built the house and pipes in it, sees how his poor upkeep the house, as well as the adult's poor decision making, has affected his grandchild, and feels empathy and/or regret. But now it's to late. All the while the parents simply move into the attic where they can no longer see the problem, while the problem continues to slowly seep in from underneath. And as the girl opens the window, hoping to get away from it all, or possibly look for a better place, she sees it's not just her own family, but potentially the whole world that let this happen.
This is exactly how I feel when I tell my parents about wanting to buy an electric car, studying environmental sciences, or just talking about the things that I (and most of the scientific community) believe need to change in order to improve the quality of life for future generations. All I ever hear back is, "Everything's fine, you worry too much." Or, "If you are so worried then why don't you do something about it." But much like this story, I can't be fixed with just me (our generation). Unless the whole family (previous generations) is on board, or at the very least, not ignoring the problem, and continuing to make decisions that only make it worse, then nothing will change. I would only needlessly struggle against something I cannot fix. The only thing I can to is continue to not add to the problem, and try to let others know that the problem blatantly exists. But then everyone would have to put down their food (their over indulgences and greed) and address the issue. Which like this family, no enough people are willing to to.

The mining of toxic rare earth metals for the electric car batteries still seems to be an environmental problem. I'm not sure that these things will assist the world. Even the plastic that makes up the car body panels comes largely from petroleum (although some new plastics are *partly* plant based) which uses an immense amount of fuel and chemistry to create the plastic.
To me, in my older age (mid 30's), we have all been sold the lie....
The old are somewhat comfortable in what pollutes badly, and the young are chained to their idealism which is only then commercialized and industrialized by the old to become the next polluter. Even the electric wind turbines are made with parts that are not necessarily environmentally sound, and the parts are shipped with diesel trucks that aren't tuned well enough to keep from sooting their exhausts (I live near a port where the turbine parts come ashore).
With the "clean energy alternatives" we are only tearing off our arms to save our bodies.... :/
Having said that, you have a heart in the right place. I will look around my house and see if I can boost the efficiency of what I already own so that less energy is necessary to keep things running.
Wishing you luck and strength in your environmental science endeavor. We always need scientists, but we need scientists who will stay the path and not be 'bought' or discouraged by extremes on any side of the conversation.

Don't feel bad... The world problems are on a scale that no one has the knowledge or social power to fix because as a kind we were never made to do life without the guidance of a loving Creator. The original generation rejected God's way of doing things, and their children have suffered ever since. But our heavenly Father has promised that soon he will use his considerable power to wipe the bad equations off the board and undo all the damage. He knows how to fix the pipes, has the tools and materials, and wants to... We just need to see for all time how impossible it is that we can manage without Him.

I have the same problem. I’m only 12, and yet I still try to raise awareness to my parents and sisters. And yet they smirk at me. I told my mom that I wanted her to stop idling her car, and donate money to environmental organizations (we are rich). And she LAUGHED at me. I told my aunt about the environment, and she said “It’s not a big deal, and it’s not our problem.” I personally want to be a scientist and study the environment, but how can I do that if there isn’t an environment left to study? I just feel like the older people around me don’t care. I started an environment club at school to try and help, but my parents aren’t doing ANYTHING. I just want to live in a green and amazing world, is that too much to ask? My dad is too concerned with the threats of China and Russia (we live in the southern US), and my sisters just don’t care. I need tips on more I can do. Also, why did God create this beautiful world and give us life, only for us to destroy it?

So maybe the theme is about how people tend to neglect and let situations grow in our society because of fear, and when children actually try to make the effort to stop or help to slow problems down in society or the world as a whole it gets worse because they aren't getting the proper support to help fix issues that adults and the elderly have caused? Adding on when kids bring up these situations people don't take them as seriously because of their age, with the mother saying "She is having her teenage moods!"
Thats how I view it, and overall I love how they represented it! Not to mention the animation is very dynamic and well done!

This usually brings me down a lot because it feels as if whatever I say doesn’t matter, which makes me feel as if I should just keep my mouth shut. This beautiful animation shows that sometimes people just need to listen to each other in general instead of putting them down.

A great visualisation of the crisis that comes with global warming, especially how the family refuses to shut of the water that is flooding the world, because that would mean they couldn't make more food, despite them already having a more than they need.
I feel like the food represents everything that we customers consume.
That we are using way more power and polluting way more than nessecary because we overconsume all kinds of products. And our careless overconsumption and refusal to compensate our standards of living will be the end of us.

    • @flojito3428
      @flojito3428 6 лет назад +125

This shortfilm is about ecological denial.
      The house is our planet.
      Water is oil.
      Food is our consumption.
The mother is consumerism, she distracts everybody from the problem, bringing a constant flood of products and entertainment. That's why she constantly needs more water (energy) to "cook" all these distractions.
The father is the unconscious consumer, who takes absolutely no responsability and counts on a technological miracle brought by someone else (the plumber), which is a sufficient belief to act as if nothing is happening.
The grand-pa is the patriarchist, conservative figure, who has built this house (the system), only stares at the newspaper saying "all is well", and doesn't wan't it to be changed.
The baby is the latest generation, born too late, already swept away by the mistakes his ancestors made.
The girl, the only one who is not in denial, who tries to stop the leak but doesn't know how... she illustrates the conscious citizens, those who have not given up the fight and will try until the very end, but feel powerless without the others to help.

Wow, I had a totally different interpretation. I thought it was about the cycle of abuse and how some families would rather keep quiet and pretend that "everything is alright" instead of addressing it head on before it's too late. I think the cycle started with the grandpa, and we see how it manifests for the children. When the daughter touches the pipes, it opens the "flood gates", so to speak, for the issues that the family are unwilling to address. At the end, we see it's too late, and the cycle has already continued not only for her family, but for many others.
Not saying you're wrong, just interesting how we understood the film in largely different ways :)

    • @flojito3428
      @flojito3428 6 лет назад +47

Your interpretation is interesting, but I still think mine is the "right" one. I don't think it is possible to speak about "right" and "wrong" interpretations of artworks, because by definition art is meant to be reappropriated. But I'm 100% sure the authors went for the ecological metaphor, for 3 reasons.
      1) The title "Thermostat 6" is a direct reference to global warming.
      2) The newspapers the grand-father holds is opened at the ecology section, where the titles says "All is well".
      3) I personnally know one of the authors of this movie, and knowing her values and commitments in the environnemental struggles, I'm pretty sure it's about ecology ^^

The part I noticed with this is now the old man sees the issue no one will listen to him either, in the beginning the mother dismissed his comments telling him that "we're taking care of the house, you're too old to worry about stuff like that" as they ignored the issue, only wanting to change cosmetic things.
If the old man talked to them, they would ignore him too.

The first thing that came to mind when I saw this is the issue that a lot of families have of not seeing problems and pretending they're not there. One child in the family (represented by the girl) will see the issue within the family and try everything in their power to fix it. They'll try to tell their family that something is wrong and something needs to be done, but the family will ignore it until it is too late. The issue, along with that girl's stress, continues to grow until it spills over (like the water in the bucket) and it isn't until the issue has gotten way out of hand that someone will realize there was a problem in the first place (that someone being represented by the old man with the news paper). When the camera pans out to show the whole world is flooded, it's like it's saying that many families struggle with this daily. But, that's just my take on it. :)

It was my mind trying to understand what later was revealed to have been emotional child abuse. Those dreams helped lead my mind to recovering the suppressed memories.

I really like this short film, the animation gives the characters a 3D illusion and keeps its consistency throughout the end, including that plot twist at the end, the moral of the story, that just sold it to me at the end. The symbolism with certain events such as the leaking getting worse (symbolising world’s problem affecting people at an individual perspective), the live fishes (showing how bizarre and how unnatural the situation is right now since they’re coming from the ocean which leads to the plot twist) and grandpa’s newspaper (giving a false sense of security of how “Everything’s Alright” when it’s not, just showing how the adults are being ignorant & ignoring the situation on purpose or giving little care of what’s going on, and how the children are starting to notice first and try to do something about but it’s too late).
I could go on & on to correlate this to real life, but I’m gonna stop here & hold myself back from writing a 3 page essay about society’s problems.

I feel like this represents life. How the older generations keep moving without worrying how their actions would affect the future generations of the world. How the current generations have inherited the problems of the past and now have to deal with an overwhelming amount of problems.... Or maybe I need to smoke another bowel haha

  • @embroideredragdoll

I sort of interpret this as the global warming crisis.
The grandfather makes himself ignorant to the problem similar to how the boomers are known to do such things.
The parents I would describe as gen X. They acknowledge that there is an issue but choose to ignore it for their own peace of mind.
The teenager represents the younger millennials and gen z who are aware of the problem that is climate change and try to fix it and her younger brother represents the future generations.
Most of the family acknowledge that there is a leak in the house and it seems like the teenage girl is the only one actively trying o fix the problem whilst everyone is minding their own business even speaking ill of her youth. The problem continues until both the teenager and her grandfather meet eye to eye. That moment is considered as compelling as it suggests that the grandfather has finally realised the damage that was caused by his ignorance. Noticed how he holds the paper the whole time until the water engulfs it? It shows that he also realises that the youth are not wrong but unfortunately it is too late to act alongside her the house is flooded.
Speaking of floods, global warming is considered to be a cause of an increased amount of floods. If you ever interpret it as such then the floods are essentially the elephant in the room.
Feel free to tell me how you interpreted this and why, I’d love to hear from you.

My city ran out of water weeks ago, it used to be one of the most advanced cities in my country, now we struggle with full weeks out of water, showering with just a bucket, buying bottles and bottles of water cause the one that rarely comes out is undrinkable and even having to pee in buckets cause we can't flush the toilets. It hasn't rained in a whole year and I am frightened, I fear for my future and for my city. Years ago I watched this short film and loved it for its perfect way to convey its message about global warming, today I saw myself reflected in the girl's eyes, the same fear, the same anger at people's dismissal of the problem, the same knowledge that my future is doomed. It may be late for my city, don't let it be too late for yours

Merci beaucoup pour ton commentaire, pour ce shot là, il y a une base de layout décor 3D, utilisé en camera mapping (décors peints en 2D par Maya). Après tout le reste c'est de la 2D (animation des personnages, animation des FX)

For me, this is about toxic families.
The adults are stuck in a “loop”, where they’ve convinced themselves everything is okay.
The pipe alludes to repressed emotions, emotions the girl is beginning to catch on to as she begins to understand that there’s a toxic dynamic in the family.
“We don’t talk about the leak” is become such a mantra for them they can’t even see it anymore. The girl is being told off from fixing the leak, because it would disrupt the family dynamics.
At the end, the family is forced to acknowledge the problem and, instead of fixing it they double down on ignoring it by moving upstairs.
When the girl finally opens up the window, maybe seeking for help, she realizes all families have their own toxic dynamics they choose to ignore.
Now the girl can choose between acknowledging the reality of living in a drowned (emotionally toxic) planet or pretend everything’s nice and dry and try to keep herself busy with other stuff to not address it.
    Beautiful short!

This is typical of today's society. This animation depicts it perfectly, it tell us that parts of society is trying to tell the others that there are issues we need to solve, and it falls on deaf ears. This suits climate change perfectly, we may be too late to reverse the effects, and mother nature is doing what she can to bring back the balance.
