  • Tarlabaşı is a historic neighborhood located in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul, Turkey. It is situated on the European side of the city, and it has a rich history and cultural significance. Tarlabaşı has a long history dating back to the Byzantine and Ottoman periods. In the 19th century, it became a popular and vibrant neighborhood with a mix of different ethnic and religious communities, including Greeks, Armenians, Jews, and Turks. The neighborhood was known for its colorful streets, markets, and a diverse population. Tarlabaşı is known for its historical architecture, with many buildings dating back to the 19th century. These buildings feature a mix of architectural styles, including neoclassical, Art Nouveau, and Ottoman architecture. However, over the years, many of these buildings have fallen into disrepair.
Gentrification has been a contentious issue in Tarlabaşı. As the neighborhood undergoes redevelopment and gentrification, there is concern that the original residents, who often come from lower-income backgrounds, are being pushed out by rising property prices and rents.
Tarlabaşı is centrally located in Istanbul and is in close proximity to popular tourist destinations like Taksim Square, Istiklal Avenue, and the historic district of Sultanahmet. This has made it an attractive area for both tourists and real estate developers.
Tarlabaşı has faced challenges related to crime, dilapidated buildings, and infrastructure issues in the past. While efforts have been made to improve safety and living conditions, it's recommended to exercise caution, especially if you're not familiar with the area.
