" You'd think that if a character is practically a black hole of a person, they'd have some gravity to them. But no. Unfortunately not." Why did I love that line so much?

Same here! What i found ironic is that I think Addie described Luc as pulling her in like gravity at some point in the book. 😅

I think one of the reasons why we feel the need to rate/review books instead of just having the experience is bc it feels good to have these congrete terms that we can identify ourselfs with. For example liking genre X with trope Y and setting Z. That + ratings are a way to build a congrete 'taste' and connect with others. I feel like goodreads fuels this as well.

I feel like we just have this innate tendency to attribute meaning to our experiences and to look for patterns(by looking into things in detail), and books are no different. For me, taking time after reading a book to reflect on it is a way to kind of gather my thoughts and really absorb how I feel/where the book brought me and what I took from that. It's kind of how you might take a few minutes to journal at the end of the day; it allows you to organize your thoughts about the events and emotions that stood out to you. It's so interesting that you brought up the social aspect of this as well, I wouldn't have thought of that, but it is such a great way to connect and convey internal experience!!

    • @jaginaiaelectrizs6341

For me, it's definitely not so much about having concrete tastes or concrete labels or categories for anything, although I do have some definite personal tastes and being able to have more specific labels for certain things definitely does help narrow things down when you're looking to find or avoid particular things.... for me, it's much more about exploring the inconcrete of it all and the technical writing craft itself and questioning the subjectivity & what is or isn't ever truly or even remotely objective at all. I like to explore a lot of different stories, and characters, and concepts, and ideas, and themes, and everything; and I love surrounding myself in a community of differing perspectives and differing thoughts and feelings and opinions and all...either shared or contrasted by my own. 🙂
I have never loved any rating system more than I loved Netflix's old stars rating system...where each star meant something very specfic yet entirely personally-subjective, such as "liked it", "really liked it", "loved it", "didn't like it", & "hated it" - and no stars was kinda like just not really having or giving any particular or specific opinion or feeling about it at all; the Netflix algorithm has never been more on-point with recommendations for me than it was back then. (I think if I were to personally use a scoring system for books, that's basically the system I would use then too.^^) Lol

True. P.S. Leo, you read so many books just in one month! As for me (I know its very important for you to know what kind of books Im reading) I dont read much of fiction literature. I read more non-fiction books and articles, mostly history (Ancient and Medieval periods), philosophy (including moderm philosophers like John Searle, who writes about ai) and biology/paleoanthropology books and articles. As for fiction I read mostly Ancient/Medieval eposes, for example, this winter Ive read Homers "Iliad" and "Odyssey". Last fiction book and not epic poem Ive read was the surreal allegorical novel "The Yellow arrow" by Victor Pelevin. I read this book a year or two ago.

For me the Addie Larue book is like a dream or a “conte” ( which you could translate as a fairy tale but… that is not exactly it, if someone has an idea they can go ahead). I read it really fast during a night which probably contributes to that. I feel like the characters weren’t very deep because they exist outside of human kind and are more metaphors as human beings instead of a pure concepts. Anyway I don’t know if that was understandable (I’m French). Also please don’t stop rating books ! It’s nice to see a kindred spirit and hear your thoughts.

I think a deeper understanding of books is quite helpful. Of course sometimes you won't be able to analyze all your feelings concerning the plot and characters etc., but even a few realizations help you to understand yourself better. In my opinion reviews are good if you tell the people a bit more about the reasons why you like or dislike a book. For example: I'm really into loyal characters and deep strong relationships. If a plot has a lot of betrayal story lines, I won't like it so much. But for others this could be interesting. So even if I rate such a book with 2 or 3 stars, as long as a tell others the reason they will still be able to pick up the book and enjoy it. I hope this makes sense 🙈😁

Hi! Regarding remains of the day, I just want to say I think the ending was the most heart-wrenching scene of the book. (spoiler to those who haven’t read) the butler is resting and suddenly realizes how much he wasted his life on the man he was serving, and for the first time he let his emotions take over and cried. i thought that part just gutted me. in the book, it ends on a happier note and he has a little hope to renew his life. in the movie (which i thought was great visual effect), it looked like he was looking out a window, and it gave an effect that he was trapped in his mistakes forever. just wanted to give that note on remains of the day, because personally the ending was what really made the book 😊

I enjoy a lot of fantasy books like everyone else, with the big plots, and flashy action, but I also really love the quieter books that are more realistic and lifelike, introspective. I try not to read just a lot of any one thing.
And as far as being able to tell someone your experience of a book:
“Every reader, as he reads, is actually the reader of himself. The writer's work is only a kind of optical instrument he provides the reader so he can discern what he might never have seen in himself without this book. The reader's recognition in himself of what the book says is the proof of the book's truth.” - Marcel Proust

I felt the same way about Addie LaRue, it was the first book I read after many years of reading slump, and I was so hyped about it and it left me disappointed. I liked it, especially the beginning and the parts in the past when she's in Paris, the relationships with the people she meets and when she sees them again when they're old. Her learning how to survive, the art...
At points it felt repetitive, especially the modern day chapters. And also very predictable, it actually reminded me of a story I wrote in highschool, a retelling of Faust by Goethe (a girl makes a pact with the devil, she's in love with a human boy but in the end has to spend eternity with the devil), also the fact that the devil is super gorgeous and of course falls in love with her... Overall I did enjoy it, but I think I would've enjoyed it more as a teen, especially the "romance"
Btw, I love your shirt 😍✨

I did not want to spoiler anything in the “main” comments so im just gonna drop it here. I also thought it was so convenient. The ONE person she meets in aaaaall those years OBVIOUSLY is a hot bookish guy with a cat who’s around the main characters age. I think it would’ve been so much better if it was just some old lady who didn’t even speak English (or any language addie spoke) who addie became best friends with or something. Friendship would’ve added more to the story than love did, in my opinion.

Oh I have a fun story about mansplaining. My coworker tried to explain to me how the printer worked for over half an hour.. he was going crazy because the explaining turned quickly into him trying to figure it out himself bc he was having no clue how it worked. But nonetheless he had the urge to try to explain it to me nonetheless. Long story short, I knew how it worked because when the new printer got installed my ego wasn‘t too big to ask the man who installed it how it worked. So after a while I asked my coworker if I could help him with the printer and he looked at me like his world was crumbling that a girl explained to him how a printer worked. It was a bit evil of me, I know.. but it was fun lol

This is why I hated reviewing books in school as we interpreted everything from the first word to a comma. Books and art in general are just not something that should be too much interpreted as it is more about the experience you have when reading a book and what each and every person is feeling as we can never disconnect our feelings to our experiences and we shouldn't! It's the coolest thing ever that everyone can take something out of a story in their own way. I don't know if this makes sense. I've read a few of Kazuo Ishiguro's books and I think the lack of proper ending is kind of his thing, his books usually just end, and then you think about them for a really long time 😅 Never Let Me Go is probably the one that has the most conventional story structure. But I adored every single book I've read by him, even though sometimes I really don't understand what the heck I just read at first, it just sticks with me for a long time. Some of Margaret Atwood's novels also had this effect on me.

I can sit here and talk in points about characters, plot, prose etc but that's rarely a reflection of how I felt reading the book and how much I enjoyed it. So yeah, I wanna go back to just talking about how a book made me feel, instead of giving those more technical bullet points. Don't know if that makes it a proper review though cause feeling is so personal.. yeah I haven't figured this out either haha

I love that you started talking about whether our reviews of books say more about who we are or the book itself. I think in the book “The Life of Poetry” by Muriel Rukeyser, she talks about how there’s three aspects to art: the creator, the creation, and the viewer. The relationship between the three is always changing and is so unique to the person because the things in art that reach out to us and the reasons why we reach out to art are so different to begin with. That is to say, I don’t think it’s pointless to talk about books or art and our own subjective experiences of it bc every perspective has something to add to the overall experience of a piece of “art” and honestly I think that’s the whole point of books and art anyway. It’s not a one way relationship. Books change us, and through our reactions and non-reactions, we affect/change/bring out a really unique albeit subjective experience of the book itself. Your unique experience of books and your way of communicating it to us just happens to resonate with me and all these other viewers to keep us coming back to this little corner of the internet :)

I completely agree!! The Addie LaRue book was so overhyped. I don’t get the obsession. It was basically a character study. Third quarter was so hard to get through! Also… plot holes

My theory is that the curse not only made her untethered to others, but it is also slowly taking away who Addie is herself

Have not yet read Men Explain to Me but am nearly finished with Simone De Bovoir's Le Deuxieme Sexe (1949). Her approach is much more macro-feminism than individual gender conflict. On a personal note, having observed how students interact, girls learn how strike a dynamic balance with typical male aggression. Glad to hear from you, thx.

I can explain the urge to review every book someone reads.
The authors wrote the books, it's a way to say to the readers: "hey fellas, this is what I want to tell you. Read it".
The readers would naturally want to reply. However you can't just have the author's phone number. Therefore you expressed your thoughts on camera before they're forgotten in time and lost in space.

So the point of review (mainly talking about art and stories here) is to provide your thoughts and opinions for people that tend to enjoy/dislike things that you do. That why they can make an educated decision on how to spend their time and money. I follow you because I find value in hearing your opinions on things.

If you’re interested about the concept of communication through art and how it’s something unattainable, for both the artist and the audience, I recommend reading Batailles’ Literature and evil. I did a presentation about it for one of my classes and it’s basically about what you’re describing.

I have another completely unrelated audiobooktip, because I've been thinking about it since your last(?) video and now I've started listening to Gideon the Ninth and it's good. Like, proper good. I was worried it might be hard to follow without a physical copy as backup, but it's very well done. I'm pretty sure it's going to feature an enemies to lovers romance, a real one, with actual 'I will make your life absolutely miserable enemies', so that might draw you in :D

There was a book "The Sudden Appearance of Hope" by Claire North with kinda the same premise as "The invisible life of Addie Larue" - once people look away from the main heroine, they no longer remember her; and I really liked it - it's a contemporary spy thriller of sorts. As the plot goes on, however, the two books seem to be completely different. Would love to read "The invisible life" now, hope to enjoy it as well!

okay now all i want in life is a monthly wrap-up video of leonie doing an interprative dance for an uncomfortably long time, she doens't talk, just holds the book in the air and then the video ends

  • @ShaniFox

That’s why I like rambly wrap-ups and don’t think they necessarily need to include a rating and such! Like it’s so subjective and even if I usually find myself having very similar taste to someone else, there will always be some books we have different experiences with. There have been books I was very hesitant to read because I saw someone I trust give it 1 or 2 stars, but then ended up loving, and the other way around. I’d rather find out some of the tropes in the books, whether they’re fast or slow paced, character or plot driven etc. because that is a more reliable way of determining whether I’d like it or not! :)

You read so many books just in one month!

Have you read The Buried Giant by Ishiguro? It is also "Art" speculative fiction. It's really really weird. I hated reading it and gave away my copy but man, it has stayed with me for a very very long time. I'm now sorry I gave away my copy because I want to go back and read it again. However, I think it makes more sense to read it like poetry in short snippets.

    • @abstractforest4546
      @abstractforest4546 3 года назад

Oh definitely, The Buried Giant has stuck with me for so long. I really liked the speculative fantasy/literary fiction crossover genre and I thought it was a fascinating world (set in medieval Britain and based largely in Arthurian myth). It was both beautiful and emotionally unsettling. I still feel like I don’t fully understand it but I would recommend it!
