Many years ago many factories closed because of high electricity cost, lack of infrastructure, corruption and red tape, radical worker unions like KMU who keeps organizing strikes. Wonder why when you look at your toothpaste, shampoo or any household things we use, they are made either in Indonesia, Thailand or Malaysia or Vietnam. They used to be produced locally until Unilever and Proctor and Gamble closed their factories here. We also used to have tire manufacturing and car assembly here, now it's all made in Thailand or China.

Main reason is the current Phillipines top leadership is leaning towards imperialistic US to pit against China. There are 2 main things that PH is very bad at. 1. Our labor cost does not match the skill level expected. For the same labor cost, you can hire a Vietnamese with a masters degree compared to a Filipino who does not even have a bachelors. 2. Cost of doing business. The taxes and other permits issued by departments and LGU are not only expensive but are not transparent and full of graft and totally inconsistent. If you file a complaint against agencies here, don't expect anything will happen. In Vietnam, if an official/agency gets a complaint, they're investigated thoroughly and booted out within 1 week often sent to jail or worst executed. The equity provision and other things people are saying don't have any value in deciding whether to move the business or not. You can ask any foreign businessman and they will tell you the exact same thing.
It also should be noted that corruption is a significant problem in the Philippines, as well as across Southeast Asia. People live in such poverty that when they become wealthy, they adopt a mindset of "taking as much as you can while you can." They never consider growing their business partnerships for mutual benefit, and so everyone loses.

The Philippines under FPRDuterte was on its way to being conduscive to foreign investors and progress. Under this administration unfortunately, all the previous changes have been wiped out and has taken a full reverse back to full blown corruption, criminality and has taken the Philippines on its dangerous path to war.
The Philippines gained independence long before many other Asean countries. In the early years of Marcos's rule, The Philippines was regarded as a role model in South East Asia or even Asia. However, the glorious days didn't last as mismanagement and corruption continued to plague this country until the ousting of Marcos. People's power didn't restore order in this country as malpractice was deep rooted. Back to Marcos Jr and history seems to repeat itself. But it's still the result of People's choice.

What's worse is that it's protected by the 1987 phil constitution. And what's even worse is that Filipinos don't want to change their constitution to adapt to modern economic practices. Charter Change is a dirty word when it comes to politics here in the Philippines. Unless Filipinos get educated about these issues, then we will never rise above being a 3rd world country.

Many years ago many factories closed because of high electricity cost, lack of infrastructure, corruption and red tape, radical worker unions like KMU who keeps organizing strikes. Wonder why when you look at your toothpaste, shampoo or any household things we use, they are made either in Indonesia, Thailand or Malaysia or Vietnam. They used to be produced locally until Unilever and Proctor and Gamble closed their factories here. There are 2 main things that PH is very bad at. 1. Our labor cost does not match the skill level expected. For the same labor cost, you can hire a Vietnamese with a masters degree compared to a Filipino who does not even have a bachelors. 2. Cost of doing business. The taxes and other permits issued by departments and LGU are not only expensive but are not transparent and full of graft and totally inconsistent. If you file a complaint against agencies here, don't expect anything will happen. In Vietnam, if an official/agency gets a complaint, they're investigated thoroughly and booted out within 1 week often sent to jail or worst executed. The equity provision and other things people are saying don't have any value in deciding whether to move the business or not. You can ask any foreign businessman and they will tell you the exact same thing.
It also should be noted that corruption is a significant problem in the Philippines, as well as across Southeast Asia. People live in such poverty that when they become wealthy, they adopt a mindset of "taking as much as you can while you can." They never consider growing their business partnerships for mutual benefit, and so everyone loses.

Basing on what I hear about Philippines:
1. Tedious business application process
2. Less tax incentives
3. Hard to get full ownership especially the smaller ones
4. Government corruption
5. Connivance and theft in the workplace
6. Labor union strikes or demanding too much
7. Management done by the locals is unprofessional (role abuse)
problem here in Philippine corruption is already deeply rooted in custom and tax collection agencies. even if you legally paid and declared properly your taxes they will find way to dig into you declarations even way back decade and years just to get anything from you. what can you do? when new president elected they will cry out pagbabago or new changes always or new policies which in turn nothing is finish . even if the policies are already good enough. they just wanted it there way just to bleed the coffer for there own gain.

The Philippines under FPRDuterte was on its way to being conduscive to foreign investors and progress. Under this administration unfortunately, all the previous changes have been wiped out and has taken a full reverse back to full blown corruption, criminality and has taken the Philippines on its dangerous path to war.
The Philippines gained independence long before many other Asean countries. In the early years of Marcos's rule, The Philippines was regarded as a role model in South East Asia or even Asia. However, the glorious days didn't last as mismanagement and corruption continued to plague this country until the ousting of Marcos. People's power didn't restore order in this country as malpractice was deep rooted. Back to Marcos Jr and history seems to repeat itself. But it's still the result of People's choice.

And too add to that. It's hard establishing foreign businesses in the Philippines because foreigners could only own 40% of the business they establish there.
What's worse is that it's protected by the 1987 phil constitution.
