A few days ago i ordered my M1 Mac Mini. I got the 16 GB Ram version with 512 GB of mass storage. I got it for 1069 Euros from Apples own refurbishing service. I am very hyped.
I've been running my older Mac mini 2012 off an external SSD as the primary boot volume and it runs just fine over the USB 3 port. So I would say spend the money on as much memory as you can afford, because, like the video says, that's all you'll ever get, then add external storage to your heart's content, because that's the easy part and storage only gets faster and cheaper.
I purchased the M1 Mini with 16g memory, 256 SSD and a 500g external SSD plus a Satechi hub for multiple ports on the front. Haven’t had any problems whatsoever...very happy with my purchase.
I bought the 1 TB hard drive plus I use external storage because from my experience, macs run more efficiently when there is large unused storage capacity. Why, I don’t know. I like to have half my hard drive empty.
Any computer will run more efficiently with less on the hard drive because it has less content to have to search through to find what you want at any given time
Only flaw I found was Time Machine Backups. If you leave it checked automatic. It will take snap shoots and eat up local space. So i too uncheck it. then go back in terminal and delete all them snapshots. As they were eating up 100gb of space.
I’m not an artist but an author. Now, about the new Mac mini M1. For a start. let customers know that when buying a Mac with an M1 chip, tell them beforehand that they need a WIRED KB and mouse to get the machine up and running. Secondly, plain instructions telling the customer to plug in their wired KB and mouse instead of looking at two lines and tiny green spot. It took me over an hour to work out what it was. Apple has now taken the minimalist view to the extreme and it is frustrating. Not everybody is intuitive. As to the main problem? I was unable to install Rosetta. It told me that installing Rosetta on this Mac was not possible. So that meant four of the Apps that I use on a daily basis would not work. So, after eleven solid hours, two conversations with Apple, seven trips to the Apple Store, I gave up and it's being returned. Oh, and I had a two-day migraine.
Great advice. I have the 2018 Mac Mini with 512gb storage and I upgraded the RAM to 32gb after purchase to save mega bucks. Not sure if Apple fixed the cooling issues with the Mac Mini since my version but I run a program called MacsFanControl and it keeps my beast nice and cool.....no thermal throttling issues at all with that program running and spinning my fans sooner and faster than what MacOS tells the Mini to do without it.
@Zulu Foxtrot - Interesting solution. Do you think greater use of the fan will causer shorter life cycle for fan. Also, is the mac mini you used closed for consumer addition of ram? I thought 5k imac was only product for user upgradable ram but I amy be wrong. Thanks in advance. Best wishes to all.
@@Applecompuser I upgraded the RAM myself by watching a RUclips video that detailed how to do it. You need proper tools and be able to work with very small parts, but it's not too difficult. And no noticeable issues with the fan, been running it faster than iOS defaulted it to for 4yrs now. I only needed to do with when I was booted into Windows and playing very graphics intensive games. I had the fan on maximum nearly the entire time. Apple apparently put a very good quality fan in these.
I have been thinking of buying/using apple since 2004… since I don’t really need it I never really did it as the comfort of the windows system was too much to change as I use only office and web… even though I had a small startup where my team used Macs obviously for developing iPhone apps … BUT FINALLY … end of 2021 Dec I ordered the Mac Mini M1 with 16gb Ram … I hope to get familiar with the iOS platform..I do a bit of Python programming to run some basic crunching on stock market data..which even a pentium could do 🤪 nothing earth shattering )…. Just the thrill of learning and trying out the Apple ecosystem … from all accounts the M1 16gb looks like a great piece of hardware at its price.
Really enjoyed your video. Went over all the key points and explained well. Been searching for something for video editing and never used a mac before. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
I fully agree. My M1 MacMini is 8Gb/256Gb configuration. I have a 2Tb SSD (which I also used on my previous Intel MacMini) for all data storage. I have only the OS and apps on the internal SSD just like what is discussed here. I also have about 8Tb of external storage for media only...which is backed up to other external drives at least weekly. I do not run apps that require a lot of "rendering" (like Photoshop or iMovie or the professional versions of these types of apps). The "speed" of my media drives may be slow by current standards, but it is plenty fast to play 4K movies without hiccups. So my MacMini is also my AppleTV server which powers 3 AppleTVs around the house...something I've been doing since the first AppleTV in 2007. HOWEVER, for the past 6 weeks since receiving my M1 machine it has not performed like a Mac. All kinds of issues. Spontaneously ejecting external drives, leaving apps open that showed closed in the dock, the Music app starting up spontaneously at random times. None of this was happening on an intel iMac (running Big Sur) that I also own. So finally, last night, I re-installed Big Sur on my new M1 box and as far as I can tell the problems that have plagued the machine ever since I took it out of the box have all disappeared and the machine is running up to expectations. So, apparently, the factory install of Big Sur was somehow buggy....and, yes, it has been upgraded at least twice since I received the computer...it was running the current revision of Big Sur OS. But that has all disappeared and the Mac is finally running like a Mac. Finally, I do not regret my original decisions regarding 8Gb/256Gb configuration. However, I run "Clean My Mac X" and it clearly shows that memory...whether RAM or the use of the CPU...is managed very differently between the Intel and M1 chips. The CPU almost never gets stressed at all and the RAM is fully utilized constantly...this is a big change...it is not noticeable in performance but it is a total shift in computer resource usage philosophy on the part of Apple.
I took your advice and Bought the 512 / 16Gig version. I'll just use external storage on my network for extra storage. Nice reviews. I also got a copy of final cut pro finally. So new software.
@@TechGearTalk I really can't say anything bad about the old 2014 Mac, it is still my primary video editing platform. I am really looking forward to improved speed and performance. I will keep you posted. Thanks again!
What you choose is what you’re stuck with, so choose wisely. When I bought my M1 MacBook Air, I based my configuration choice on my current MacBook Pro mid 2012, 16GB RAM and 500GB storage, it’s not even a quarter full and does everything I need, all my documents/music are stored on external disks and cloud storage, I keep regular time machine backups in case of a disaster.
The lack of an upgrade option is not a flaw in the Mac Mini. Actually the Mac Mini was never meant to be positioned as a pro device. It meets my needs in producing music, and I think this is the first Mac Mini that can give you some semi pro performance. But there's more to specs on a pro device. I know you had powerful Intel Mac Mini's before, but I don't count them as decent pro machines, because they have a massive flaw in them. The Mac Mini is not a good design for handling a lot of heat, so if you want to meet the potential of an Intel Mac Mini, the fans will go crazy. That is what is so important about the M1 to me. The first Mac Mini CPU, that will allow you to really push it, because it creates so little heat. So while it isn't a pro device in spec options and I/O, it's pretty potent.
This is great video and very focused. I have made up my mind before I watched and bought Mac mini ram upgraded to 16 GB and SSD storage to 512 GB, after listing to you I feel even more that I made the right solution. As I am a person who stick with my pc for very long time. Even, if I wanted to go for something new this Mac I can give it to my kids to replace 6 years old windows pc. It’s no brainer how apple moved the goal post with this new M1 chipsets.
I love the idea of MAC MINI, small, compact, but very capable! The only downside that holds my order or M1 Mac mini is the blue tooth connection issue, keyboard and track pad that could really drives me crazy
I got my MacMini last week 16GB 1TB SSD, Bluetooth seems to work ok and my Apple magic keyboard and mouse connect ok. My trackpad doesn’t respond though but I read on the Apple website a solution is to connect it via a cable to the computer to help it recognise the trackpad… I’ve not tried this yet. A bonus however is that the MacMini can also air drop to my iPhone and iPad and vice versa
Great introduction to the subject, I would have loved it if you had spoken to where the speed of an external Thunderbolt SSD would fall relative to the Samsung and the internal storage. And maybe mention or point to some of the videos here that do go into performance testing a bit more, to help people get a better handle on what will be enough. Happy New Year!
I think the base model make the most practical sense for me after watching this video. It gets me in the door with apple at a low price point then once they upgrade the m1 chip you do not have so much invested you hate to upgrade!
Appreciate the insight Lawrence - I completely agree with the idea of a smaller investment and then a full commitment later on. Thanks for being part of the channel.
I got the $699 base model as a place holder until they release the 16" Macbook Pro. My expectations weren't high but it has slowly exceeded my expectations after two days. I run it on my 2012 16" Mac Book Pro screen and can use its keyboard and trackpad. I ordered a 2nd USB hub but don't plan to buy any other accessories.
I’m close to ordering a Mac Mini M1 myself. My 2014 MBP 15” is showing it’s age and hard to use with Blackmagic’s Davinci Resolve BRAW 4K... (color grade, then export to prores to edit FCPX). So I’m planning on 16G. For storage? Well later in 2021 or 2022 a iMac or Mac Pro Mini with M1x or M2 with dedicated GPU’s or more core GPU’s... then the Mac Mini will be for minor tasks.. media hub...playing my own 4K movies on my 4K HDTV via HDMI... but really center on music creation. Both Logic Pro X, and Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol and Maschine. Those plug ins and loops are frankly over a Terabyte. So if I wasn’t thinking of Music creation a 16G 512 SSD I think would be a sweet spot.. for my plans for later with music? Well... Logic and Native INstrumetns prefer to have all the loops on the main HDD.. Native INstruments can put the heavy loops on external, and they have had a hit and miss relocation when updating upgrading.. frankly... having gone through it, and in the future with Logic Pro X.. I might just go for 1 Terabyte or take the big gulp and 2 Terabytes just to make my file management simpler. The loops and effects, many are not only CPU intensive but bandwidth intensive... so internal speed might make a difference or it might not. Hard to say. I’ll probably go 16G and 1 Terabyte of SSD... but if the timing is right maybe the 2 T... though most of Native INstruments can be relocated to external SSD.... it’s not as bad as it sounds.. as I remember Logic Pro X ..... really really prefers to be on the main HDD.. and every time you do an upgrade I remember having to re link and make alias... etc.. etc... so window 1980’s to me... ugh.... WHY?? So tell me about your storage for video editing? Probably on one of your other videos? I’m running a G-Speed Studio 16 T... which I DO NOT LIKE! Finally figured out how to have it not recheck it’s self every hour over night and wake me up.. every month it does a major failure and says all drives are dead... have to go into the command line and turn them on again... Anyway what are your thoughts on good fast thunderbolt 3/4 USB 4 raid drives? Especially for 4K prores/BRAW file management?
@@JanTomas123 Same for the Mini. This version of the M1 has the same UCB controller. I’ll hold out for the M1 version that offers an expanded amount of USB-C ports that would allow dual 4K’s at 60Hz, an external high speed ssd and a USB-C attached hub. I’m thinking Apple will announce something by the summer of 2021.
Good video - maybe show examples of how the mini m1 handles apps like Netflix/streaming etc as these are the main things most people use. I understand there’s a bunch who use for Adobe etc but they always tend to have big budgets so usually always should look at no less than 16gb ram and 500gb ssd (while ssd is important not critical because of externals being cheaper than Apple)...would be good to see a review based on the above rather than just Adobe etc
It'd be nice if you talked more about the effects of ram on RISC vs x86 systems. 8GB of ram on an Intel machine is going to be a bad time, but not on an ARM soc.
Exactly. Too much talk on bumping up the specs and the consequent cost of these cute machines. I see videos of professional? video makers using them. Errr, these cam heads should be using a Mac Pro to get their work done. Most people who use the mini are email, spreadsheet, safari users that only need min specs. Save your money and spend it on fun stuff.
Your Review was much more honest than others biased pro Apple hype; as you do mention the lack of ability to upgrade "Ram". Your money saving suggestion of external storage was great; and you showed how the price could nearly double by going to 2 Terabytes and 16 Gig of integrated memory. It may have been useful to compare to an alternative system in the same price range. One other item is the M1 is not Intel compatible; as it must use emulation to run most Intel programs. In addition future repair of this is now a proprietary system and will be limited to Apple. I do understand the M1 can run some apps common to their phones which may be a plus for some. Overall I think your review was the most honest I've seen.
Lucky you, with my mac mini the HDMI will not work , the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth worked sporadically , 3 hours on the phone with Apple support , they couldn't help me, item returned. Never had so many problems with an Apple product
My Mac Mini just arrived today 😎! Thanks for such an informative video. Judging by the wisdom you shared I feel pretty good about my decision to score this little jewel. Keep em coming oh wise one. 😊
My 512GB M1 Mac mini comes in on Monday. I got the 48" LG OLED CX, a Logitech Brio UHD webcam that'll be here on New Years, now all I'll I need to get is the JBL Xtreme 3 and the Apogee MiC Plus USB Microphone and my desktop set up will be complete for at least a year. Oh yeah I also want to get the Space Grey Magic Keyboard and Mouse, but for now I'll just borrow the White Magic Mouse and Keyboard from my 2019 27" iMac.
I was running Big Sur on a recently bought 2014 mini and the Bluetooth problems stopped when I went back to High Sierra, also external USB 3 docks were wiping HDD registers ( would not mount from then on, anywhere ) till I moved them away physically from the mini unit.
If you never seen Intel NUC, then check it out. However my favorite will be Raspberry Pi. Now you can find many similar devices, but 64 bit 8Gb Pi tops my list. And remember, less money isn't always good.
Nice video! Just sub’d. Never owned a Mac cause iPad(s) have done what I need. That was until my thousands of huge pic/vid files on iCloud went out of control. Started downloading to SSD and quickly discovered that base iPads weren’t up to task. Saw your video and for $599 on-sale @ Costco, thought why not an M1 Mini? It arrives today, so we shall see. Nice to have 90 days to try it, with zero risk. Plus Costco doubles the Apple warranty, and their CC doubles that to 4 years total. What’s to not like? 6/15 Update - tried for 85 days then returned the Mini to CostCo. With it I hated being confined to the home office & it’s lack of mobility. Instead, I went with iPad Pro M1 with that beautiful 12.9” touch screen and the horsepower I needed while being totally mobile. Do I wish for a combined MacOS & iPad touch OS - of course.
Hi Thank you for the information, wonder do you have any video content regards to how to make full use of the limited ports and will mac mini able to support 2 monitors.
Great video and M1 Mac Mini video series! What RAM configuration do you recommend for photographers? I use Lightroom and Photoshop simultaneously. Thanks!
Thank you. If you can afford 16 - you’ll never regret it. I have 8 and it works fine, but assuming you want to keep this machine for a while, it’s worth the upgrade. Hope that helps. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Subbed. I agree regarding the DRAM and to some degree the SSD. As long as you segregate the storage you won't have any issues. But, you have to do the math on total terabytes written, or TBW. If you are using the external drive this isn't a big deal as there probably won't be a lot of write cycling. But IF you don't have an external drive and you do a lot of file swapping, then you may run into a life cycle issue with a limited amount of internal SSD. So, IF you go with a smaller Mac Mini M1 SSD option then your recommendation to get external SSD (or HD) external drive should be a serious consideration. Thunderbolt to that drive should provide excellent bandwidth, even if that is large video files. In summary, it isn't just the cost per GB, if you save on internal BE SURE to segregate storage and write directly to the external, not just to internal then move later.
I heard the Bluetooth problems are fixed with the new updates. I get mine Thursday. I got the 512gb with 16gb of ram because they had it in stock. The other configuration you had to wait three weeks.
I know that the memory and the storage space are not upgradeable. But for me, it replaces an iMac which came with a keyboard, a mouse and a built-in 27" screen and webcam. So in my view, the Mac mini is the replaceable unit. I don't have to buy a new screen when I need a faster unit with more memory.
I have concluded I will need 1 TB internal storage for my use case. Primarily, I plan to fill every port on the machine from day 1, so squeezing an SSD in as well, it’s going to be bottlenecked. Then for my use case, I’d going to be DJing, streaming and running a Virtual machine for Windows. I want Windows, games, all those music and visual production applications and my 50+ GB music library accessible with maximum speed / minimum latency. On my MacBook Pro doing these things, Windows is in Bootcamp with some games and MacOS on a separate partition. In total, I’m using around 500 GB storage today. And I chose 16 GB RAM, obviously. My other machines have 32 and 16 makes me uncomfortable. I wouldn’t touch 8 GB with a 16 foot pole.
Great video sagi💯 perfect analysis of every single aspect. The most imp point is that you cannot configure the device once you purchase it so we need to choose wisely. Buy nice or buy twice💯💯💯
When editing from the external SSD, do you run proxies or is it fast enough? I wonder about a larger internal SSD to allow editing on files held internally and then offloading to an external or NAS when complete.
It’s fast enough unless your rendering 6K if u have issues change timeline to 1080p and change back to original just before rendering. I can link a video of u would like?
great video! i use design softwares for work and then logic pro kinda frequently, but it's definitely not as heavy as video editing/storage. I'm gonna be getting the 16gb/256 gb model and have an external ssd, which i think will be great for my usage.!
@@tom.b.6174 so initially had a 8gb/512gb but found that it wasnt performing as fast as i’d hoped. I would say it even felt slower than my 2018 macbook air at times. But i eventually returned & exchanged it for a 16gb/512 config and it runs suuuuper nice! I use it for design work and it’s really smooth even with bigger projects! No issues with all the tabs i have on top of that hahaha
@@Holly18th Damn, that sounds so cool. I’m a video editor so I constantly run heavy programs like after effects and sometimes Premiere Pro at the same time, would you say 16gb ram and 256gb ssd is enough for that type of workload?
@@tom.b.6174 hmm i would probably recommend the 16/512 config if you could, considering video work is a lot more taxing than my design stuff. And apple has a 14 day return policy if the 16/256 doesnt meet your needs!
Great advice! Still waiting for the 2021 version for my final decision, but am starting to see that the 16 gig version with minimal storage, is the way to go! It’s just that until I see all my options, I’m on a holding pattern!

I have been thinking of buying/using apple since 2004… since I don’t really need it I never really did it as the comfort of the windows system was too much to change as I use only office and web… even though I had a small startup where my team used Macs obviously for developing iPhone apps …
BUT FINALLY … end of 2021 Dec I ordered the Mac Mini M1 with 16gb Ram … I hope to get familiar with the iOS platform..I do a bit of Python programming to run some basic crunching on stock market data..which even a pentium could do 🤪 nothing earth shattering )…. Just the thrill of learning and trying out the Apple ecosystem … from all accounts the M1 16gb looks like a great piece of hardware at its price.
Thanks, your videos are the best Apple focused videos out there. Keep it going man, much appreciated!!!
Thanks so much Gene 🙏🏻 Thank you for being part of the channel!
Really enjoyed your video. Went over all the key points and explained well. Been searching for something for video editing and never used a mac before. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!
So glad it was helpful Brian - appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback. Merry Christmas and thanks for being part of the channel
Super appreciate you sharing James! Really valuable info!
I would get the 16Gb from the off. If nothing else, it'll boost the resale value in the future. But yes, an external drive should be just fine.
Appreciate the input Chris!
I took your advice and Bought the 512 / 16Gig version. I'll just use external storage on my network for extra storage. Nice reviews. I also got a copy of final cut pro finally. So new software.
CONGRATS!!! That’s a nice setup!
@@TechGearTalk I really can't say anything bad about the old 2014 Mac, it is still my primary video editing platform. I am really looking forward to improved speed and performance. I will keep you posted. Thanks again!
Dongels up the WaZoo! No Disc Short on ports.
Excellent analysis. Definitely helped me figure out my needs. Thanks!
Good perspective. Appreciate you contributing to the community.
@@peterkelly8357 yap, that’s the magic of apple system
Great introduction to the subject, I would have loved it if you had spoken to where the speed of an external Thunderbolt SSD would fall relative to the Samsung and the internal storage. And maybe mention or point to some of the videos here that do go into performance testing a bit more, to help people get a better handle on what will be enough. Happy New Year!
Add ram to lower RAM to disk swap. The HD has a write endurance limit.
Really helpful! The one video that helped me make the decision! Getting mine next week.
Thank you for your insightful and friendly information .. cheers.. bravo ..!!
Apple should consider giving an nvme ssd slot
Apple has never been big on encouraging people to open up their machines.
Thanks a lot for your simple clear easy to understand no time waste analysis
You are the best
Glad I could help. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Great video! Thinking about buying one of these soon, would you recommend this for music production using logic Pro?
Thanks Cameron - yes, it will be a great option.
Your videos are so helpful
This has been great for me, i planned on getting external storage and will now upgrade the ram to 16gb. thanks mate
Why is 8 gigs of ram on an older Mac different then on this one? Thanks for clarifying.
Was going to do the same question...
thank you very much for the valuable information
The limited amount USB-C ports could be an issue for some, especially if they intend to run duel 4K monitors.
The M1 macbooks can't run 2 monitors natively right now, not sure about the mac mini.
Do you know what the speed difference is between Apple storage and external? Would love to see the difference between the T7 and Apple!
Thanks for the suggestion - I'll incorporate it into future videos.
Your videos are excellent, thanks so much for the valuable info.
Lucky you, with my mac mini the HDMI will not work , the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth worked sporadically , 3 hours on the phone with Apple support , they couldn't help me, item returned. Never had so many problems with an Apple product
Oh no... that’s no good. So sorry.
Great presentation,. Honest and informative. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the kind words 🙏🏻
The keyboard recognition bug isn't limited to M1 Macs, I also get it (intermittently) on my Intel Macs.
Appreciate you sharing!
I was running Big Sur on a recently bought 2014 mini and the Bluetooth problems stopped when I went back to High Sierra, also external USB 3 docks were wiping HDD registers ( would not mount from then on, anywhere ) till I moved them away physically from the mini unit.
Helpful video 👍
If you never seen Intel NUC, then check it out. However my favorite will be Raspberry Pi. Now you can find many similar devices, but 64 bit 8Gb Pi tops my list. And remember, less money isn't always good.
Great video! Wishing you a very merry Christmas!!!
Thanks so much Dominic. Merry Christmas to you as well 🎄
Thanks for the information! Subscribed 😎Just ordered one.
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for being part of the channel!
Nice video!
Great Video, definitely things that others don't mention
Glad that you also review Apple products. Great as always!
More to come!
Hi Thank you for the information, wonder do you have any video content regards to how to make full use of the limited ports and will mac mini able to support 2 monitors.
What thunderbolt cable are you using with chrome/silver connectors?
Great video and M1 Mac Mini video series! What RAM configuration do you recommend for photographers? I use Lightroom and Photoshop simultaneously. Thanks!
Thank you. If you can afford 16 - you’ll never regret it. I have 8 and it works fine, but assuming you want to keep this machine for a while, it’s worth the upgrade. Hope that helps. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Thanks for posting !!
Very well reasoned and presented information. Subscribed.

16Gb memory with no more than 512Gb SSD seems the best value for money. Shame the upgrade for factory memory & SSD are so ridiculously high though.
Thanks! I bought it with those specifications!
Glad I could help!
Interested in audio production.
I currently use Logic Pro plus Sibelius Score writing software.
Do you think one of these would work well for a digital art studio?
I've just ordered intel NUC and this Mac mini M1.
Aside from the Bluetooth issue, mine doesn’t see my ‘wired’ keyboard during setup. It asks to connect via Bluetooth and overrides the cable 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Great content for choicing options of mac mini. I give u my sub!!!
I'm buying the base model mac mini.
So glad I could help. Thanks for joining the channel!
ive ordered the 16gb with 512gb ssd... now waiting for 2 weeks 😅
CONGRATS!!! Thanks for sharing and for being part of the channel!
Thank you for this video.
Great tips, thanks.
Best video on Mac Mini configuration 👍
Oh wow - thanks so much!
Great video sagi💯 perfect analysis of every single aspect. The most imp point is that you cannot configure the device once you purchase it so we need to choose wisely. Buy nice or buy twice💯💯💯
Thank you so much for the kind words, input and support!
Hey if you did get those configurations, how is the mini working out for you?
Do you have the link for the external have you are using?
It's not your only chance to add extra ram. You can sell the machine you bought and buy the 16Gb machine if it turns out you needed it.

Thanks! I love your channel, one quick question: have you tried editing 4K videos from the Samsung T7 in the Mac mini? Is there notable lag?
Great advice! Still waiting for the 2021 version for my final decision, but am starting to see that the 16 gig version with minimal storage, is the way to go!
It’s just that until I see all my options, I’m on a holding pattern!
