If you ever want a cool alternative experience, Zane Lowe (formally of BBC Radio 1, now off Beats) curated an alternative soundtrack for the film and you can view it with that as well. The original soundtrack is iconic but it is very well done and makes for an interesting alternative take

Great soundtrack especially in all the places where they used no music, I felt that as good as this movie was it would have been even better if they had set it in the late 70s or early 80s where the soundtrack could have been period and also putting a movie in a certain older time. Always adds to the immersion.
The film itself and the car chases were really reminiscent of those simpler times, it was really focused on the characters and it could have been made 30 years ago with Marlon Brando, Charlton Heston, or Paul Newman and be essentially the exact same movie.
I say this forgetting that this is actually a remake of a 78 film.

@@JamesVSCinema Interesting to notice too. There is a metaphor when Ryan Gosling is watching cartoons with the kid. He asks if the shark is a bad guy, when the kid say yes, he asks how he know that, the kid answers that he is a shark, so its obvious that its a villain. Kinda of how the character feels in the movie, he is like a shark trying to be the good guy, running away from his nature.

@@JamesVSCinema That's interesting. I always thought Ryan Gosling's character was the frog in the story, not the scorpion. He tries to do the right thing for others, even when he knows it's just going to come back to bite him. That's why he carries the scorpion on his back.

I really like how the Driver is framed in the movie - how he's placed in the camera, in order to really emphasize how much of an outcast he is. Notice that he's rarely dead center in the frame - usually pertained to the sides - but when he is, it's usually during a time of harsh conflict. A little detail that I thought was pretty interesting.

There's a lot of analysis videos on Drive, some of them are about the lighting in the movie. That elevator scene in particular (btw probably my favorite kissing scene) I do think the lighting plays a big role, the way they contrast each other, Gosling is in almost complete darkness while Mulligan's face is receiving the light, then Gosling goes for the kiss and now he's as lighted as her, like saying "okay let me be in the light one last time before I do what I have to do and you are no longer in my life".
Refn has a great visual style, I love it, he did an Amazon Prime show called "Too Old to Die Young" and is visually stunning, great cinematography and lighting.

  • @RennanDeMatos
    @RennanDeMatos 3 года назад +10

My interpretation of the elevator scene, if anybody wants to talk about that:
The moment Ryan's character notices the man on the elevator is a hitman the whole dynamics of the scene changes. From that moment on the protagonist seems to be between two worlds, the one of "purity/love" and the one of "violence/hate".
When the lighting changes he embraces the moment as he embraces the female protagonist, like the alegory of the "calm moment before the storm", which fits with the transition. The moment he lets go of her he also let's go of that world of purity, from that moment on they don't share the same side of the frame, she escapes it at every chance ,while Ryan gosling's character fully embraces the violence, all those hints of humanity are forgotten as the woman watches the man kill the assassin in a incredibly brutal way, the woman takes a step back, and they stare at each other with a clear view of the two opposite realities they reside in, the elevator door closes separating the characters in their metaphorical realities, leaving gosling alone with only the violence caused by him.
    One love brother!

Great reaction my dude. I appreciate how you called out that switch up in the elevator. From my interpretation, that's when she got to see THAT side of him (the scorpion side). He's a good guy that has done and participated in a lot of bad things. He has a good heart but he might feel like a villain, and maybe want's to escape (aka Drive) away from being a "bad" guy. I think she and the kid is something he romanticizes as a reason to be better and possibly his happy ending. But what that happened in the elevator and he realized that to save her he had to reveal to her his dark side, and the scorpion loose. He knew that it might mean losing her. That kiss felt like a goodbye kiss. And It's so perfect how that scene ends with the elevator closing as she stands in awe. Perfection.

If you're interested in similar movies, I suggest "The Driver" (1978), "Vanishing Point" (1971), and the original "Gone In 60 Seconds" (1974). While these are old school, I feel that these are where James Sallis/Nicholas Wining Refn, may have gained some inspiration, and insights to the world of the original getaway driver mentality

I just watched your reaction video, and as a filmmaker (you, not me lol) I think you should also do a reaction video for Lost River (2014) if you've never seen it. It was Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, and although the subject matter is completely different from Drive and the movie is the caliber you might expect from a first time director, the score, cinematography, atmosphere, and other elements have much in common. Great reaction. I love this movie, as well as Ryan Gosling's performance. He says so much with so little dialogue, barely stringing a full sentence together for the first half of the movie, and when he finally does, it tells us so much more about his than the words themselves. His calm exterior is not about self preservation but more about protecting everyone around him because he along knows what he is capable of. It reminds me of the Doctor Who quote, "Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many." The elevator scene is one of the most perfectly captured scenes I've seen in movie. You and other commenters have already discussed the meaning, so let me just say, freaking perfection.
Side note: Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but the marketing campaign here in the U.S. led a lot of people to think this was going to be more like The Transporter, resulting in a woman suing the studio for false advertising.

I loved how the used the song 'A Real Hero'. Firstly it was a soppy romantic love song about a knight in shining armour.
But then by the end it became a desperate lullaby to a man who willingly gave up his humanity to save the people he loved, whether its coming from Irene or himself .

Refn is color blind so he not only goes for high contrast and saturation with his palettes but he is also forced to resort to tones and specific colors most directors wouldn't dare to use.
"Neon Demon" is a grand example of that. "Bronson" as well.

Christina Hendricks getting her gorgeous head blown off and the elevator kiss then stomp were the scenes that stood out too me! And the not blinking making people think he's dead ending! Reminds me of the top at the end of Inception.
Brian Cranson was on a roll straight off of Breaking Bad!

The reason for the closeups on the jacket are because of the story of the scorpion and the frog. Ryan Gosling eludes to it in his phone conversation with the 'final boss', lol. But he doesn't tell the story. The tale is about a frog who carried a scorpion across a river and the scorpion stung him and drowned them both. The frog asked why and the scorpion said it's because it's in my nature. That sort of explains the character in this film.

I don't know if you've seen Knives Out, but your comment about digital vs analog film reminded me: it was shot digitally, but post-processing and grading was meant to invoke film, and a special set of tools were designed to even give light halos/blow outs as you would get with exposed film. It allowed the crew to shoot scenes in much lower light and tighter spaces than if it was with analog.

You should definitely checkout other Goslyn films like "The Place Beyond The Pines", "Blade Runner 2049" & "First Man"; or his debut directed film "Lost River". Same director, Nicholas Winding Refn has made lots of wild and differing films. He is outstanding. He's like the most "indie" director who actually has big budget films. One of his coolest is a Viking film called "Valhalla Rising". It's weird as hell and WILD and savage. Check it out!

finally got around to seeing this movie in full and the whole time I am drawing parallels to other great movies which just shows how good this movie is... Obviously there's _Baby Driver_ connections but also Bandits, the _Ocean's series No Country for Old Men_ and _Training Day_ among others.
I kept pausing through the movie to hypothesize what would happen next.
As soon as he took the wise guy to his car to give him the money I could tell that he was going to get shot in the back of the head and dumped in the trunk by the kid, but was surprised that he put himself in the position to be in front of him, only to get stabbed.
Then my mind shot to Bandits where I was so sure he had faked his own death because of the Hollywood stuntman connection.
I was very pleased that the makeup trailer that we saw earlier made a comeback, when we see Cheqkoff's implementations, it makes the universe richer.
The only issue that I still wonder is does he still intend to drive?
Where is he going to go?
will he really have to look over his shoulder for the rest of his life or was the wise guy just trying to get in his head?
Why is he going to not be with the girl does he not want to make her a Target if she is safe but they still come after him which is why he left the money in case that was still going to be tracked down?
Then why is he going to leave the girl if he went through all of that trouble in broad daylight in front of the mob front to fake his own death?

I know this review is old, but at 13:00 I always interpreted that kiss scene as him pulling her out of the reality of the situation and saying goodbye before stepping back into his own brutal existence.
