I felt so bad for Alex after watching the movie and then watching it again knowing he had an intellectual disability and no concept of what he was doing due to his functional capacity and then being tortured by a desperate Father wanting his daughter back not knowing it was Alex’s “Aunt” responsible for the kidnappings and Alex’s abuse.
@@wdg2736 given he had the intellect of a ten year old, I doubt he could understand that that was “wrong” if you get what I mean. Deakins + Villeneuve = guaranteed masterpiece. One of my all-time favorites, so glad you were able to check it out! Just a great subtle way of showing how his character evolved by the end of the film.

One of my favorite movies in the last several years. Jackman's genuine showing of rage in that scene was actually scary. Jake's character was so detailed and well played too. Another masterpiece from Villeneuve imo. Everyone played their roles so well.
Apparently they kept getting on Jackman about not showing enough anger in that seen so that all culminated to him being really pissed they had to keep filming it so many times and that was the end result.
@@jromins9155 Yeah i remember hearing about that in some making-of or an interview. Hopefully they gave him a nice pat on the back and brought him a coffee after lol.
Bro I love yer channel and I LOVE this movie. Saw it in the theater and holy cow, I was so scared as soon as it started. That freaking shot that zooms in on the tree bark with the house in the background coupled with the sound/music design: brilliant. I was super chilled to the bone JUST from that. So many more great moments in this movie! Love yer commentaries dude! Keep it up!
@JamesVSCinema I think that was exactly what the director wanted to happen lol - at that point we're still sympathetic with Jackman's character so we imagine it'll be bad but not that bad. Then it hits you with this amazingly grotesque makeup job that makes your stomach squirm and start to doubt.
even though every film ever has some form of flaws, this is one i just can't fault. prisoners, for me at least, is perfect and maybe the film i've rewatched the most. i've never seen atmosphere put on film like this - it feels almost as if i'm involved in it and sort of intruding in on the character's lives, it's all just so real and there's something about that that no matter what rewatch i'm on, this film always feels just as impactful as the first time i saw it.
Would love to see you react to Blade Runner 2049, that film is pure art. Let's be real though, all of Villanueve's films are, just react to all of them lol.
Hugh is amazing in this!! I mentioned in another comment here that he and his wife Deb tried having kids, but had two miscarriages which is really sad, and so now have two adopted kids from which they’re really active in campaigning for raising foster children. I think he brought that experience to the role which really brought the acting to amazing and realistic heights.
Your channel and Brandon Likes Movies are by far the best reaction channels out there. You and Brandon on the other hand have great observation and acknowledge all the different positions of filmmaking like the cinematography or sound design. Great content as always.
It’s funny you mentioned that you don’t want to see it again because I have seen Prisoners 6 or 7 times and it just keeps getting better, definitely my favorite Villeneuve film
There's a whole video about the theme behind why he filmed so many trees and what they meant in the movie. Its a crazy aspect that you only learn about the movie if you deep dive.
Yay! I think I recommended this on "Dunkirk'! Another fun, jolly romp to watch! Just a quick story, I've seen this movie like 6 years ago, when I wa living in the UK. My brother and his wife trusted me that particular night with their child. They were going out first time since he was born. So I received notes, phone numbers, addresses etc. Family left, my godson, being awesome, went to sleep quickly, so I watched a movie. This one. After about an hour in, I paused. checked on the child, went for a drink, and finished the movie. I slept in his room that night. Told my brother, he's not to watch this one. He's paranoid as he is, no need to feed that beast. I think it's one of Deakins/Villeneuve more subtle movies. This one made me realize how versatile Hugh Jackman can be(well "Prestige" kinda did it, but this hits more). Jake is just..fucking awesome, such a strong cast all around. Can we give Paul Dano a comedy or something? He's always so intense in the cinema. (We need You to see "There will be blood" You'll like it, it's depressing and fucked up, to be fair any Paul Thomas Anderson movie would be good!) Gonna grab a drink and watch Your reaction. Great choice as always. And dude 3K! Did You just get a 1k subscribers during the weekend ?! Have a great one man!
I actually have There Will Be Blood on the polls!! And thank you for the support my friend, you’re awesome seriously! Also, hope you’re having a damn good day 🙏🏽
Finally getting to your review of this; love your synopsis! Just a personal tidbit on this film...i first watched it in 2013 single with no kids. I rewatched recently, now married with 2 kids, and this script hits so harder as a dad..almost hard to watch at times. Brilliant acting by all.
it was a biblical reference because a man struggling with alcoholism, it wasn’t too too revealed about kellers past with alcohol and more or less abuse on his kids……if you read the article when jakes character is looking up and researching that old apartment building….it was revealed that kellers father was a police officer, and committed suicide in that building. and again, with Jakes character…orphan, grew up in catholic boys homes, perhaps maybe or maybe not he was abused, making him grow into a young; but however, lonely workaholic, losing his faith completely (if he ever had any while growing up in religious homes). so all of that saying….A man with mental health issues, alcoholism…..and him having his faith completely tested by his daughter being abducted and throughout the film you subtly see him praying to God…but gets stuck on the line “AND FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESSPASS AGAINST US”…..he couldn’t bring himself to that finish that line. his faith was tested and he failed (perhaps rightly so, i mean …what drew me into this film was because i’m a father of 3 daughters so i praise this film and the performances.) the biblical reference is just about keeping your faith in God….no matter how much the devil dances on your soul. the story was completely brilliantly written and performed…the entire cast NAILED their roles and emotions to successfully tell this bizarre and brutal story
The first time I watched this was just a few weeks ago. I heard so much about it and seen a couple clips while avoiding spoilers and plot details, and damn this instantly became one of my favorite movies. Just everything about it is perfection. What impressed me the most is actually the naturalness at the beginning between the parents talking. Like damn that’s the best and most natural I’ve ever seen what I guess you could call “down time.” So well written and well acted. Love this movie.
This movie was phenomenal! From start to finish!! Definitely one of the best from the director, and I agree that it’s one of those movies you would only need to watch once. The authentic performances from the entire cast made this film feel real, the scenery and color grading also makes the film grounded in reality and it really does feel like a horror movie because of the conflict and tension.
Not only does this movie have great cinematography (Roger Deakins of course), a captivating story/screenplay, and excellent directing, but it is hands down a performance clinic. Everyone is on their A game here.
I'd highly recommend watching Bad Times at the El Royale, sir. It's an overlooked and underrated film. It's has great cinematography, amazing cast and an interesting story. Great video as always.
I believe that the biblical references are for stablishing the characters. For example Dover is first seen praying and later on has a cross hanging on his car. Whenever he is gone too far he prays to hold on to his good persona. When he is not capable of turning on the water he prays, as he knows he is doing wrong, but he keeps going to the point where he is literally on the bottom, realizing that he is not meant to be saved as he has gone too far, this time not praying for himself, but for his daughter. The labyrinths also have meaning, as it represents the urge to get to the center of it and find the treasure (Anna and Joy), both Dover and Loki want the same thing but try different methods that drives both of them to the edge. The trees as well, have meaning. There are many shots statics of trees or branches, and in the backround there always are trees. This represents the psychological state of the characters, as they resemble a neuron (seen clearly on a shot when Dover is siting on his car with the reflection of thousands of branches)
Woooooow this really hits now. I was wondering if they’d be any connections or undertones and you definitely made it’s alittle clear for me now! Thank you for this comment!
Whenever I mention this movie to friends, it seems like not many have watched this! I recommend this as much as I can & I'll hear back how amazing it was. This movie needs way more eyes on it. The scene when Hugh Jackman starts destroying the sink with the wrench asking where his daughter is gives me chills....
I enjoy watching another react channel because she gets really invested and dramatic about the movie. But I enjoy watching yours more for the appreciated of the film and the art of it. Its a nice way to look at it different from someone with the educational/technical knowledge that I dont have.
A couple biblical references I noticed. In the beginning after the hunting trip. The cross hanging from the rear view mirror is straight and not moving like his faith. When he picks his friend up to show him the kid he took to torture the cross hanging is now swaying and can’t really tell it’s a cross. His faith is swaying. His wife’s name is grace. Thru out the movie he’s literally falling farther and farther from grace. There’s other too. Also Hugh Jackman is a carpenter like Jesus.
This was my first Denis Villeneuve movie and I personally think it's his best. It's full of tension and has great atmosphere throughout. So glad you reacted to it. Good to see you well. Much love
Thanks for that brotha, I’ve been doing good man, grateful to being healthy. This movie is definitely a staple for him. Thank you again and much love brotha
You should react to gaspae noe's climax. I think its one of the most unique movies out there in terms of cinematography and pacing. A crazy trip of a movie
i have an interesting relationship with this movie. first off when it was being made the casting director lived next to us she was a cool lady. and the people across the street renting the house also worked int the industry and they gave us a for your consideration copy if before the movie came out in theaters. i was 13 at the time so i wasn't allowed to watch it but i snuck it upstairs one night and watched it on my computer... i would agree with my parents that i shouldn't have watched the movie at that age cause it disturbed me to no end. also where the family lived was shot in the neighborhood that my childhood best friend used to live in and we where about the same age as the girls doing the same things they where so that added to me being terrified.
Dude this is WILD. Yeah this without doubt can cause some trauma to a brave 13 year old kid hahaha. That’s so cool though in hindsight though having this film being so close to where you grew up around.
this is one of my favorite movies ever. I love all of Denis Villanuve movies and was super super excited to see his first part of a dune interpretation this year but at this point it will be delayed
Been a while since I saw this, but if I remember correctly the book they found at this one guys house, was written by an ex CIA-agent. Right? And it was about mind controlling young children. So basically the movie was about MK Ultra, without really saying it. Someone please clarify, if I´m wrong. Also I really liked how they left some things about Jake Gyllenhaals character in the dark. He was at this strict catholic school, his knunckle tattoos, and his behaviour towards the priest. It created a picture in my head, without it being completly spelled out.
Villeneuve is a genius...... i'll personally recommend you Incendies (2010) if you haven't watched it yet again directed by him and trust me this is one of the few filmmakers who has the potential to come close to Christopher Nolan in modern times
Yes! Guzikowski's script is a great read, which isn't always the case with great films, but I also like the story changes made for the production re: Loki's investigation. The ending is perfection.
“It is my belief, Watson, founded upon my experience, that the lowest and vilest alleys in London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.” - Sherlock Holmes
I think this movie is fantastic analogy for masculinity, and not in an entirely negative way. The violence is there, sure, but drive to protect and defend is also there. The drive to shoulder the burden of conflict, and impact of it (distancing oneself from loved ones in order to protect them, even at the cost of your relationship with them), are very authentically portrayed.
The casting here is almost perfect. The only bad actor is given a stoic role… absolutely perfect for him (sorry, but Jake Gyllenhall can’t act to save his life). I never thought I’d see a movie where he can actually give a good performance. Yet, here it is. This is a brilliant movie.

There’s information littered all over this film but it doesn’t hold your hand and keeps its pace rolling. Thank you again for the kind words man, you guys make this channel awesome.
One of my favorite movies in the last several years. Jackman's genuine showing of rage in that scene was actually scary. Jake's character was so detailed and well played too. Another masterpiece from Villeneuve imo. Everyone played their roles so well.
He does such a beautiful job and showing the depths of characters along with their relationship with the story. Hard to do but he does it flawlessly.
@@MortPure from what I remember after the this take he walked away and said "you're welcome" or something like that lol
@@jromins9155 That would have been badass xD
Bro I love yer channel and I LOVE this movie. Saw it in the theater and holy cow, I was so scared as soon as it started. That freaking shot that zooms in on the tree bark with the house in the background coupled with the sound/music design: brilliant. I was super chilled to the bone JUST from that. So many more great moments in this movie! Love yer commentaries dude! Keep it up!
".. letting the imagination take pla.. WOW That was way worse than I imagined!" that made me laugh (your reaction not the scene)
Hahaha Charles it felt like the movie heard me and told me to shut up 😂😂
@JamesVSCinema I think that was exactly what the director wanted to happen lol - at that point we're still sympathetic with Jackman's character so we imagine it'll be bad but not that bad. Then it hits you with this amazingly grotesque makeup job that makes your stomach squirm and start to doubt.
Paul dano is a great actor. Does a fantastic turn in "there will be blood" a must see if you haven't already.
That’s on the current patreon polls actually!
Im so excited for The Batman, Dano is gonna be a amazing Riddler!
Paul Dano kills every role he is in. He was fantastic in The Batman.
You picked one of the most pleasant and happy films of all time.
Hey what can I say..the patreon people are just roses and dandelions. hahaha
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. So many great performances and an all-star cast. Thought provoking and unbelievably heart-wrenching.
even though every film ever has some form of flaws, this is one i just can't fault. prisoners, for me at least, is perfect and maybe the film i've rewatched the most. i've never seen atmosphere put on film like this - it feels almost as if i'm involved in it and sort of intruding in on the character's lives, it's all just so real and there's something about that that no matter what rewatch i'm on, this film always feels just as impactful as the first time i saw it.
The amount of video essays that talk at great lengths about all the simbolism placed throughout this movie really elevates it above most.
Prisoners is o r if my favorite movies ever. There is so much to unpack in this movie. It’s a dark gritty movie with great characters.
Most challenging movie from Villeneuve has to be Enemy, absolutely recommend it.
Agreed! Enemy is actually on the current patreon polls!
Would love to see you react to Blade Runner 2049, that film is pure art. Let's be real though, all of Villanueve's films are, just react to all of them lol.
Enemy has the most disturbing ending of any movie I have ever seen. I refuse to watch it ever again cause of that.
Great reaction! James-"I wonder if he takes the law into his own hands?" 5 minutes later "Oh he built a torture room!"
Nice try injecting humor into a heavy story. "I knew she was involved, look at that sweater!"
Hahaha I try my best man, just being myself with you guys hahaha! Much love homie
James: "It's definitely her"
*Is her*
James: Oh my god!
This was one of the most stressful movies that I have ever seen. Jackman’s performance was astounding.
Im enjoying watching these old reactions.
Your channel and Brandon Likes Movies are by far the best reaction channels out there. Many people usually do quick cuts, over the top reactions, and are constantly pausing the movie to talk about whatever. You and Brandon on the other hand have great observation and acknowledge all the different positions of filmmaking like the cinematography or sound design. Great content as always.
This is awesome man, thank you for saying this! Cheers to you my friend.
It’s funny you mentioned that you don’t want to see it again because I have seen Prisoners 6 or 7 times and it just keeps getting better, definitely my favorite Villeneuve film
This is the character that got Paul Dano the role as The Riddler for sure.
11:00 All three actors were phenomenal in that scene. You have to watch them separately 3 times to see it.
Brill y all involved. Jackman was pure rage and this is Gyllinhall’s best performance.
There's a whole video about the theme behind why he filmed so many trees and what they meant in the movie. Its a crazy aspect that you only learn about the movie if you deep dive.
Oh hell yeah, literally probably in my top 5. It's a perfect film in my eyes. I cant imagine a single aspect of this film being better. Thank you.
Anytime Roland, thank you for always tuning in!
(We need You to see "There will be blood" You'll like it, it's depressing and fucked up, to be fair any Paul Thomas Anderson movie would be good!)
Gonna grab a drink and watch Your reaction. Great choice as always.
And dude 3K! Did You just get a 1k subscribers during the weekend ?!
Have a great one man!
I actually have There Will Be Blood on the polls!! And thank you for the support my friend, you’re awesome seriously! Also, hope you’re having a damn good day 🙏🏽
Now this is one of the movies that I feel are the closest to a perfect film. Perfect acting, directing, cinematography, Music, writing And execution
Agreed!
This is my favourite movie of all time
Finally getting to your review of this; love your synopsis! Just a personal tidbit on this film...i first watched it in 2013 single with no kids. I rewatched recently, now married with 2 kids, and this script hits so harder as a dad..almost hard to watch at times. Brilliant acting by all.
Alex was the missing son of that woman Loki talked to earlier in the film
The theme is: the only way out of the maze is to have faith.
Its really interesting watching someone vocalize what I was feeling when I first watched this movie but knowing where the plot is going to go
Hugh Jackman when he got snubbed for an oscar nomination
Tell me!!, Tell me!!
Where's my oscar?!
Where's my oscar?!
one of the bleakest movies i've ever seen, i was glued to the screen the whole time. Incredible!
This film is in my top 10 movies of all time.
After finished the Prisoner,I wanted again, for me this a fantastic cinema!
it was a biblical reference because a man struggling with alcoholism, it wasn’t too too revealed about kellers past with alcohol and more or less abuse on his kids……if you read the article when jakes character is looking up and researching that old apartment building….it was revealed that kellers father was a police officer, and committed suicide in that building. and again, with Jakes character…orphan, grew up in catholic boys homes, perhaps maybe or maybe not he was abused, making him grow into a young; but however, lonely workaholic, losing his faith completely (if he ever had any while growing up in religious homes).
so all of that saying….A man with mental health issues, alcoholism…..and him having his faith completely tested by his daughter being abducted and throughout the film you subtly see him praying to God…but gets stuck on the line “AND FORGIVE THOSE WHO TRESSPASS AGAINST US”…..he couldn’t bring himself to that finish that line. his faith was tested and he failed (perhaps rightly so, i mean …what drew me into this film was because i’m a father of 3 daughters so i praise this film and the performances.) the biblical reference is just about keeping your faith in God….no matter how much the devil dances on your soul.
the story was completely brilliantly written and performed…the entire cast NAILED their roles and emotions to successfully tell this bizarre and brutal story
The symbolism is crazy in this film, and detective Loki has a lot of connections to the norse myths of Loki
Oh hey, so excited for this reaction! You uploaded right when I was about to eat dinner too so it's perfect lmao. Really enjoying your content 😊
Hahaha nice!! That’s so funny you say that because I’m eating breakfast over here. Enjoy the video and the meal my friend!
This film is definitely in my top 10 of all time. Great reaction James
My brother!! Thank you for the love man, this was a crazy movie
The car scene is my favorite movie scene of all time. Never been on the edge of my seat like that before
One of my all time favorites. Hugh Jackmans acting is so amazing, and I love Jake Gyllenhaal in roles like this.
This film is traumatizing; it's so heavy and so heartbreaking that the disturbing horror of it stayed with me for a few days.
Love the one-two punch of Villeneuve and Roger Deakins. I hope they work together more in the future.
Not only does this movie have great cinematography (Roger Deakins of course), a captivating story/screenplay, and excellent directing, but it is hands down a performance clinic. Everyone is on their A game here.
The acting in this movie is incredible. I wasn't prepared the first time I watched it.
If you like these small, rural location movies check out winters bone. Top notch performance by Jennifer Lawrence.
Maybe you know more simmeral movies?
I'd highly recommend watching Bad Times at the El Royale, sir. It's an overlooked and underrated film. It's has great cinematography, amazing cast and an interesting story. Great video as always.
What’s up Alex! Appreciate that comment man that means a lot to me! I’ve seen that movie, and I loveeeeed it. Definitely had a Tarantino influence.
Yeah I was floored by that scene. Didn’t even see a movie there..that’s how real it felt man. Shivers all around.
I enjoy watching another react channel because she gets really invested and dramatic about the movie. But I enjoy watching yours more for the appreciated of the film and the art of it. Its a nice way to look at it different from someone with the educational/technical knowledge that I dont have.
one of my all time favs! I show this film to everyone! one of the most intense films of all time!
You have to watch Arrival, another masterpiece of Dennis Villeneuve!!!
Oh wow…you broke that down really well. Very astute man. This was a heavy flick! Brilliant performances all around
You are killin' it with these reactions. Have you seen First Reformed? Would love to see your reaction to that one!
Thanks Adrian! I haven’t seen that movie, I’ll add that to the list my friend! Hope your day is going awesome friend!
Prisoners is the most well constructed film I’ve ever seen
This was my first Denis Villeneuve movie and I personally think it's his best. It's full of tension and has great atmosphere throughout. So glad you reacted to it. Good to see you well. Much love
Thanks for that brotha, I’ve been doing good man, grateful to being healthy. This movie is definitely a staple for him. Thank you again and much love brotha
The father who wore the pendedbt was the guy in the basement of the preacher, he didn't leave the aunt he five years ago he got killed
i like how the intended resolution of the ending is made predictable throughout the movie by one filming technique
This channel is basically my best discovery on youtube in a long long time
Heyo Emilio thank you so much for that, wow..made my day! Cheers!
@@JamesVSCinema My friend, now YOU made my day, greetings from Perú!!
Amazing movie! Saw it alone when it came out, next day brought 3 people to see it with me. Everyone was blown away.
Hahaha that’s awesome Evie! That must’ve been an experience for them. Thank you for the love too and I hope your day is rocking!
mr.jackman ... wonderful actor!!!
Love Villeneuve, he's one of my fave directors working atm
You should react to gaspae noe's climax. I think its one of the most unique movies out there in terms of cinematography and pacing. A crazy trip of a movie
What’s up Vincent! Never heard of that, but will definitely have that in future polls my friend! Thank you for the suggestion!
Everytime I watch a movie I come straight back here to watch it with you.
How Jackman did not get at least an Oscar nomination for this blows my mind.
crazy good call with the aunt, good stuff man
In my opinion, it's a film that should be remembered 50 years from the time it came out.
Crazy that you guessed it was the aunt
"I love how they're hiding his face as well, Just letting the imagination take place"
*Sees the face* OHH MY GODDD
Same.
i have an interesting relationship with this movie. first off when it was being made the casting director lived next to us she was a cool lady. and the people across the street renting the house also worked int the industry and they gave us a for your consideration copy if before the movie came out in theaters. i was 13 at the time so i wasn't allowed to watch it but i snuck it upstairs one night and watched it on my computer... i would agree with my parents that i shouldn't have watched the movie at that age cause it disturbed me to no end. also where the family lived was shot in the neighborhood that my childhood best friend used to live in and we where about the same age as the girls doing the same things they where so that added to me being terrified.
Spot on L.A. Noire face! I lol'd so loud I woke my wife lmao
I loved Loki’s character throughout the entire movie especially towards the ending and how it ended. Thank you Lara for commenting as well!
24:15 "Look at how this is shot right now". Yep. Roger Deakins, men.
The drive to shoulder the burden of conflict, and impact of it (distancing oneself from loved ones in order to protect them, even at the cost of your relationship with them), are very authentically portrayed.
also Loki's racce to the hospital was shot like a maze. weaving around other cars
one of the best movies I’ve ever seen right here
Amazing video, very underrated movie amazing acting script writing and all
The casting here is almost perfect. The only bad actor is given a stoic role… absolutely perfect for him (sorry, but Jake Gyllenhall can’t act to save his life). I never thought I’d see a movie where he can actually give a good performance. Yet, here it is. This is a brilliant movie.
