The founder, Vesel Lekaj, stated their goal is to combat "extreme and political Islam, but also... Serbian Orthodox extremism." This movement, with its slogan "Let's Just Be Albanians," has sparked debate and legal scrutiny. Some supporters advocate for "Albanianism" as the true national identity, reflecting a complex interplay between religious and national identities in the region. These developments highlight a growing trend of secularization and a reevaluation of religious identity among ethnic Albanians.

Islam spilled in the Balkans during the Ottoman domination. It seems that Albanians, like Kosovars and Bosniaks, are now realizing that their history and culture are older than the more or less imposed colonial religion bring by the Turks.
Or the albanians realised that the wings of the eagle on their flag stands for the years of resistance against muslim invaders

When the Ottoman Turks invaded Albania in the fifteenth century hordes of Christian Albanians fled to Italy to avoid Islam. Their descendants still live in Sicily and southern Italy and are known as "Arbareshe" and many prominent Italians including popes in the past came from that minority -and even the present Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese, of Italian descent, from his name is most certainly descended from them.
They did not emigrate to avoid Islam, but to avoid being invaded, to flee for their lives.
Not necessarily, I think op’s point is more true to the history though. The Albanians had to decide wether they convert to Islam to keep living there or they stayed Christian but were forced to pay jizya ,so naturally they escaped to flee from the humiliating measures the Ottomans imposed on them

As an Albanian catholic from Dardania. I am against any religion that attacks my culture. Islam is an Arabic culture first then it is a religion second. This does not fit with Albanian culture. Turks committed genocide against Albanias for centuries. They looted, burnt, destroyed and committed atrocities of every form imaginable. People converted to Islam to survive the genocide but it clashed with Albanian culture and therefore it remained skin deep. We have a saying we use in Albanian lands. “If you scratch us, we bleed catholic”.
This gives even hope for the Netherlands
When Albanians moved to Italy en masse in the 90s, several of them adopted christianity.

Hi there i'm an indonesian ex muslim. I just want to know as a neighbor, can you describe about muslim culture in singapore. For example indonesia is muslim majority, hence it is not safe to come out as an ex muslim atheist. The people here canot tolerate non muslim culture (cant build churches,etc). I'm really curious about it since singapore is secular. Thank you 🙏.

Muslims here range from a smaller group of very religious but I would say most are ‘moderate’ and liberal. Quite common to see ppl in hijab in same group as Muslims in usual clothes or even pretty exposed outfits . We are Fortunate here so far

Islam is an Arabic culture first and it is a religion second therefore has nothing in common with Albanian culture. Ottomans committed genocide of all forms possible from human atrocities, looting, economic destruction, destruction of schools and universities which Albanian had 2 universities in 1300s on par with the other European nations. Ottomans destroyed all this in the name of Islam but they made a crucial mistake. Albanians already believed in God and more importantly they already had a developed culture, language and traditions that predate any Arab by millennia. As a result, Islam never could take root with Albanians because it clashes with Albanian culture. However, people artificially converted to Islam to escape and survive the ottoman genocide during the ottoman occupation. Islam was never able to become part of the Albanian culture. People now are abandoning Islam which they never practiced it in the first place, it is imperative and extremely important to preserve your culture and history. I am happy people do not want the Arab culture to destroy one of the oldest cultures in Europe.

I honestly don't ever thing religion had impact on Albania , we seriously never cared about the religion of my neighbour nor anything , I grew up celebrating Ramadan and all aswell enjoying christmass and all .. bottom line was a gesture of good will and a family celebration . I hardly know of any population having a true religios peace like us , we simply didn't care at all , and honestly I don't think this news matters at all for the average Albanian .. we never cared we still won't we will simply respect the religion and leave it at that

what i find scary is that the proud albanians have forgotten that they once were a christian country. there national hero skanderberg fought the muslim invaders for around 25 years or so in a guerilla war. the double headed eagle is a christian symbol. they have forgotten or they were made to forget who they once were.

That's what they get teached. That's scary for me. Like always winner writes history right. And overall I think it's an important part not to forget where you came from. That's why they worshiped stones and trees and Muhammad had a strong connection to nature especially stones and trees.
The double headed eagle is Albanian symbol much older than Christianity and was originally a Pelasgian symbol.

And what I tried to say is it has been a Christian symbol for hundreds of years and yes symbols all the time get adopted into other cultures of course. But what I'm not a fan of like I tried to say above is young Albanian people getting teached that its a purely Muslim symbol and there hero was Muslim and so their history that teaches them where they came from gets erased by false teachings. That's what I don't like. The symbol itself has been used by the Roman empire and byzantine empire and more. Same goes for the crescent moon and star for example. It's the modern symbol of Islam. You find in it a lot of flags. But Islam adopted it from the Roman empire (just a little sidenote not realy part of the topic).

Don't forget that Albania for a long while was a staunchly communist country, and the dictator, Enver Hoxha, had a special affinity for the anti-religion aspect of the ideology.
I made decisions on the political asylum of Albanians in1990s. Only Atheist country in the world and people were severely punished for practicing religion during the Communist regime. 56 percent actually shows an increase. Christians population is decreasing due to emigration due to the poor economic prospects in the country. Muslium Brotherhood money funding mosques. It is a worrying sign.

The orthodox Albanians are mostly assimilated by Greece and brainwashed by Greek nationalism propaganda for example the Arvanites and the so called North Epirotes.
Actually a lot of Albanians that went to Greece were from southern Albania, which is 50/50 between Orthodox and Muslims, while the north is 50/50 between Catholic and Muslim
Additionally in south a lot of the muslims are Bektashi and not Sunni. A "Bektashi" is closer to an Orthodox than to an Sunni Muslims in his behaviour

As an albanian from kosovo to whom islam religion was somehow "given by family" I decided to be not part of that religion anymore since I don't really feel "Islamic" enough such as going to mosque 5 times a day and doing stuff that are considered "halal" and then I just decided I'm atheist now one. I still don't do stuff that I belive are wrong but I'm not really strict about em and for as long as I don't step on my beliefs I think I'm a good citizen and there are many people our society are on the same page as me. but to be honest islam was forced to us Albanians by ottoman empire but it never was part of our culture and Albanians never gave a fvck about any religion so i really this is pretty normal on albanian society

The Albanian people are also hugely influenced by Greece and Italy, both of which are very secular countries with a strong Christian identity and open to a lot of foreign people (well ... Like the Albanians). It is also an historic fact that islam was forced on Albanians, originally they were Christians, mostly Catholic.

As an Albanian, I can say that the 45% of people declared as muslims are not practicing it. They don't have a clue what Islam is or what it means to be a muslim, based on Islamic rules. Only 5% of the people in Albania practise it. Also, in Kosovo there is a movement for leaving Islam and I am surprised by the positive feedback of many Kosovo Albanians. In fact, you dont need to follow any religion to be a good person, you just need to have the desire to do good.
For majority of Albanians religion was not that high on the totem pole of our identity

That's a smart move from the Albanians, especially since they're ethnically closer to the other Europeans, who are non-muslims, and Islam is quite foreign to Albania, as a result of Ottoman colonization in the 15th century, but the problem is that nationalism itself can be easily intercepted by dangerous politicians and political ideologies, in which case religion is an insurance against such interception, as an alternative force to the state, and keeper of the national tradition, fortunately the Albanians still have their native, Albanian-Orthodox Church.
