I love wrap-up videos by a few selected booktubers, the ones that are actually reading AND analyze books in a personal manner.
What I am currently struggling with is all those book hauls, where booktubers read the blurbs of a huge stack of books that they wanted to purchase...and then they don't review them because they already have purchased too many books to read😬.

Media studies nerd here 🙋🏻 I can confirm that a lot of these bookish folks (between RUclips/Tik Tok) usually just read out GoodReads descriptions as their wrap-up to fill in their content gap. When you spot it, it's really easy to tell. I do know of people who CAN read that many books with a full time job, but it's almost like what is the difference between "reading" (skimming) and having critical analysis of the book itself.
I had originally followed your channel, KD, because you were so fresh and weren't going with this algorithmic formula to make money.

I like watching wrap ups of books I haven't read because I don't want a deep analysis of a book I haven't read, I want a brief opinion from someone I like. I will only watch full on review of something I've already read. I prefer making wrap up videos too, I dont read enough in a week to make it more than 2 books usually though.

Hi! As a new booktuber, I found your insights to be very thoughtful and a good reminder as a creator. When I started booktube, I really wanted to focus on the quality of my content, initiate discussions, and share my reflections/musings on the books I’ve been reading.
However, I’m realizing now just how time consuming and challenging it is to deeply engage with what I read. It takes time to process what I read and come up with something concise, yet thoughtful to share.
Meanwhile, I see other creators coming out with content so quickly, reading and buying books at a rate I can’t keep up with as a working professional. This does make me feel like I have to keep up with them which can feel disheartening at times.
But I appreciate that there are people out there who prefer more in depth reviews and thoughtful insights than quick, gleaned info. It makes me hopeful that there is space for me on the platform to show up as myself and not feel like I have to chase trends. Thank you for this reminder! 😊

This is THE reason why I prefer reading vlogs, where people talk about the book, and their reaction to it as they go. And the wrap-ups are mostly extended sales pitches. I usually skip those. Even from my favorite booktubers.

  • @PQ_497

I usually avoid booktube because when I was trying to get into reading it was overwhelming and put pressure on me. It also seems like most just follow trends and hypes because quick glances at some of the popular booktube recommendations show they are badly written, imo. I Read very slowly and I'm trying to be OK with it.

I like well done wrap ups. You're totally right that a lot of them are just vague positivity paired with the blurb. But if it's done well, a wrap up can provide great information and critique on a book in a faster, spoiler free format. I also love it as a way to hear about new books, because I probably won't click on a whole review video for a book I've never heard of

Firstly the phrase worm washing 😂
Next … some people can eat a whole family pack of Doritos and not feel sick whilst others can only have a few and be full. It’s each to their own and the same goes with reading.
In terms of textual analysis and the ability to verbalise all this, we aren’t all as gifted as you 😝❤️
Anyhoos love your Kieran take as always.

The pressure to read loads and loads of books has been around the book internet for as long as I've been around (I guess a decade now?!) and it will never go anywhere. Some people seem to think it's this new wave of BookTok influence, but it has always been this way! And many people seem to be using it as an excuse to target young enthusiastic romance/fantasy readers which gets on my nerves to no-end. Let the girlies have their fun.
I understand that's not the angle you're coming from and this is more of a genuine point that you're making. I do think it's pretty obvious when someone hasn't engaged properly with a book and doesn't really have much to say about it, which I think can happen to even the most avid readers on occassion. But when there isn't a single book where there seems to be a thought beyond the blurb, it's pretty clear if someone is playing up rather than really enjoying their reading.
I suppose it all depends on the person and what they are reading. There are some styles of storytelling and writing that are just quicker to consume than others. It's so dependant on circumstance as well. During the pandemic I was easily reading 20 books a month. I wasn't really working, my social plans were next to zero, it was my whole life tbh. It was really jarring for me when I came back to London and had some normality resume and my reading rate went down rapidly. So, if a person has the space in their life to devote the bulk of their hours to reading, I can see how they're reading 20 books per month. I probably read more like 10 or so books a month, and am frequently accussed (and it does always sound like a confrontational approach) of that not being true.
I do stick to the wrap-up format with my videos. But mainly because I don't really see my content as existing for other people. Sure, I do ideally want people to gain *something* from watching, but I decided quite some time ago that I did mainly want my channel to exist as a time capsule or diary of my reading for myself, rather than for an audience. There's something about the format that I enjoy as a viewer as well. I see it as a monthly check-in with my favourite reviewers.
I really don't know how this valuation of quantity of quality is combatted. Books and media have long been soaked with problems of over consumption. But I hope for every vapid set of half-baked reviews, there are plenty more good ones to balance it out!

This 110% and I’m guilty of this, especially when I didn’t have any ideas for videos I made a lot of top fives and a lot of wrapup videos just to fill gaps and I cringe at them all and there is a reason most of them are private.

I think I’d have a breakdown if I tried to read 20 books in a month, so I’m with you there. I’m not sure how you can properly engage with a book or think about its themes if you’re reading a new one every 1.5 days.
I do like and prefer doing wrap up videos though, but try to aim for a 5-minute-ish review of each book so it shakes out about the same.

Thanks for posting this video. I had been noticing this lately, people posting videos of a list of books where they've just read a couple of chapters, "Maybe I'll keep going... I'm not sure right now. And here's another one I've just started..."
Perhaps I'm a little guilty of this myself with my quest to finish the Modern Library list of books.

My grandmother would call this, "You read at the book, but not read the book." I find it fascinating how people read 20 books in a month as an accomplishment rather than processing and thinking about what they read. I can discuss books that I've enjoyed and those that I've not so much. My question is, how engaged are people with reading? It seems more like consuming than engaging.

I do wonder whether prolific readers consume a lot of audio books. A long-distance lorry driver, for example, could get through quite a few audio books in a month. But even then, twenty is still a lot. Anyway, never mind the trends. Please carry on reviewing books the way you do - it's so much more interesting and your enthusiasm is infectious!

I really miss booktube and bookstagram from 2020 and before, when ARCs were really rare and people were sharing full reviews (not just vague pretty reels) and actually discussing books, rather than feeling a pressure to own and read lots of new books, rather than just read and appreciate them. It seems just lack sincerity and actual engagement

I’m gonna add to this and like I said, I’m guilty of the wrapup video and I hate them all lol and I’m gonna get in trouble for saying this, but the reason I think a lot of wrapup videos exist on this platform is because they don’t have the understanding of the book they’re reading or liking they can’t analyse it 😅 at one point it was guaranteed views on my channel and then all of a sudden it was like a light switch. No one watched them anymore.

  • @Lokster71
    @Lokster71 6 месяцев назад

I agree with you to some extent. I do think you can read 20 books a month if your in full time employment. I used to read loads on the commute in and out of work. It helps if you can read reasonably fast but I do sometimes think I read shallow rather than deep. But I do think - broadly - quantity wins over quality. There are a number of BookTubers who I'm not convinced have actually read the books their pontificating on. And the new book thing is like 24hr news. There battle has become about being first not the most accurate. Also I don't mind if someone's opinions are short on books if it sounds like them and they've got something interesting to say.

It's all about the parasocial. I wish more people did individual book reviews. Wrapups and "hauls" are just milking the parasocial aspect of booktube. It kind of makes a sort of sense the algorithm would like them though, or if you're doing youtube for money, because I might skip an individual book review if it's a book I know I'm not interested in, but a video that's touching on multiple books, who knows. I hate "hauls" way more than wrap ups though, what's the point of listening to someone talk about books they haven't and may never read?

You do wonder. But there are some reviewers who do the wrap-ups quite well, with really well thought out analysis. @GunpowderFictionPlot, @BobtheBookerer, @EyesonIndie, @BenReadsGood @BooksImNotReading, @AnaWallaceJohnon and @StalkingKafka are examples, they've made me a better reader and helped me see things I wouldn't on my own. (There are others as well.) I'm amazed by how quickly they read while still having time to look deeply and figure out how to discuss all they've read. I have a hard enough time with my one book a week...
