At least Tim tries to admit his "warped perspective" about how expensive it is to live in SF, but no offense, "networking" is not gonna work for everyone. His privileges as a SF native is pouring out and making him come off as naive and foolish. I love you Tim, but even you need to admit that SF is outrageously expensive. I was there once for PSX and was appalled by how much not only gas was, but food in general.

It actually blows my mind that these "internet celebrities" are renting. Do they not understand that's literally just throwing money down a drain? If they move out of this city they could each get their own HOUSE (not apartment) and have a solid investment for their future (it's possible KF dries up somewhere down the line). Except they all seem to buy into the "culture" of SF, as if NO OTHER CITY could ever have culture. It's a great marketing ploy to keep people in the city though. Make them feel like nothing is better outside of SF. I hope someday they'll realize how ridiculous it is that they're renting in a city they have zero reason to be in. They could probably get even better guests by moving to Santa Monica or somewhere closer to LA like Colin did, not to mention they'd have far more opportunities outside of strictly gaming. They aren't a tech company and they aren't a game company, they're a podcast company, so I'm not sure why they're still in SF paying ludicrous amounts of money TO RENT. It surprises me how hard it is to get Tim to move CLOSER to Disneyland, where he could get an annual pass and go to his heart's content.

He doesn't want to leave the city and now that he has setup that stupid home theater, even less chance of them moving. For some reason HE's the one running the company, the dumbest of the group. After all he was the one who convinced the group to spend a stupid amount of money for that useless LED wall(something he gets super insecure over every time it's mentioned, just like SF). I miss Colin calling him out on that. Tim is literally sinking this company.

Telling people to "Just Network" to find a place to live is something I don't agree with. That may work for a young person or someone new to the city, but what if you're someone who has been doing all of the right things. You've been smart with you're money, you've been living at or below your means, and then you get kicked out of your place because rent is increased. Or what if you have a family. Should that family just network to find a place to live? I agree that people need to be better with their money and not live above their means. Other than that tho, I think Tim is COMPLETELY out of touch. I appauld you all for bring up the topic tho. I like when you all take a break from the funny to focus on serious issues.

They said that they were coming from a place of somebody just trying to make their way into the industry, and criticised anyone who is trying to support a family, or run a business. So many people in these comments are such choice listeners it's crazy. If you need to support anybody but yourself, they said it would be smart to live outside of SF. They also brought up a term of the landlord not being able to increase your rent, even if the market changes (I forget the word because I don't hear it too often), Nick has that set up, and Tim said he is so lucky to have that. But yeah, just keep drowning out all of their criticism (which they admitted they were harping on SF for a long time) and start another war in the comment section.

We had Ray Tracing also up in the Facebook Group and I wrote a long explanation about Ray Tracing and stuff. Most of them was explained quite well by Andy, but I think I just post it here again. (In my old university in Saarbrücken, we have had several computer graphics groups that were researching real-time ray tracing applications 10-15 years ago, when I was studying. I also had several lectures and seminars on that topic, so I went back to some of material from back in the day to boil everything down to the nitty-gritty. Over there we had projects like rendering the inside of a Boeing 777 with several millions of triangles in real-time or later some student re-wrote the rendering engine of Quake III with Ray-Tracing. That student then ended up at Intel and is continuing his research over there, I think up to now.)
So... it all boils down to the rendering techniques rasterisation and ray tracing.
But let me first explain rendering first. Given a 3D object or mesh that has a given texture that is applied to it (that means we can associate color values at the surface of the object) is set in a scene. This 3D scene is to be projected to a 2D image plane, i.e. the image that is output on the screen. Within this scene are different light sources, like lamps or the sun or other objects that cast light into the scene.
With rasterisation, the image considers the pixels of the output image and which 3D objects are being projected per pixel. To this end, the texture of the object and the light that is cast on it directly is being considered.
With ray tracing, this gets a little more complicated. Consider again the set of pixels of the output image. Now think that rays are being shot into a scene. Once it hits an object, however, it follows the incident angle into the scene. This ray now may hit other objects until it eventually hits a lightsource. Usually, as with rasterisation point-light-sources light an object directly, but some objects have certain material properties that allow additional bounces of a light ray (also the strength diminishes after several bounces). With these properties in mind it is possible to render realistic shadow boundaries, transparent objects or realistic reflections. Here the idea is to model an ideal representation of global illumination.
In general, as each bounce creates several additional rays into a scene, this may generate lots and lots of computations needed to compute the incident light onto an object, so those computations had been done mostly within a large computer cluster infrastructure... and real-time applications had been done only within a network cluster of off-the-shelf-computers in the last 10-15 years.
Now, processing power seems to have been increased in the last couple of years and those ray tracing computations have been optimized together with additional hardware that now fits into a convenient (but expensive) graphics card or CPU (Intel is also introducing Ray-Tracing in their processors as well).
Graphics cards of today are basically thousands of small little mini processors that can be tasked with large amounts of small computations. Those computations can be done in parallel which is helpful for ray tracing, because most of the calculations are basically computing hit points of rays within a scene with objects and following the trajectory of light towards their points of origin. If my 10-minute re-research on the today's methods for ray tracing is correct, then Nvidia's approach is to make the graphics card as good and parallelisable as possible whereas Intel also includes CPUs for their Xe Server architecture... but whereas Nvidia is providing this technology for gamers and scientists, I think Intel is focussing more on the entertainment business, i.e. Animation studios like Pixar or Dreamworks Animation.
This is basically the idea behind ray tracing, why it has been the holy grail of rendering and why it has been difficult to apply this to games up to this point.

You can't build a San Fran adjacent, a New San across from the old and make it truly affordable as well as holding the same old culture/moments. Sad. $110,000 can go a long way in an out of the way place, living light royalty in isolation. Get enough people together, you can build quite the gateway community and at least make a new town (not city), much like the film festival cities but without the annoying annual tourism.

Their friends are there and everything you could want is within a train, car, bike ride distance. Its expensive but that's the trade off. As to where you live there probably isnt shit around for miles but you get a sizable house, land, beautiful view and peace. Priorities I guess.

Lmao how do you know where Nick lives

Tim hasn’t lived enough life for me to take any of his opinions seriously. And it’s really been dragging KF down lately.

Watch The Last Black Man in San Francisco and then have the conversation again. Ironic the message of that movie compared to this episode.
I like you guys a lot, but there was almost no good advice in here. I have an extremely high quality of life with all of the things Nick and Tim explained about SF. I live in SLC and sure, the nightlife is not the same and there isn’t as great of a food scene, but the other perks and money I save is completely worth it. It’s an amazing city to live in for millennials, families, anyone really.
Idk it just feels like they’ve been in their bubble for a really long time.

SLC doesn't remotely come close to offering the lifestyle options that San Francisco does. It's fine if you don't personally care about the benefits that SF provides and many people don't, but for those that do care SLC would be a miserable place to live in comparison.

BlueDream I’ve lived in SF too as well, I’m aware. I mostly wanted to highlight that you can have a high standard of living in almost any city in the US, without having to spend or lose money along the way.

Yeah, because out of all of them, Kevin is for sure the one that needs to eat until he hates himself. Makes sense.

At what point does this podcast reach a level of funny even approaching "kinda"? As a comedian, this episode is the Today sponges of umbrellas in a menstrual monsoon.

Lol it's people like Tim that has many life long Democrat voters rethinking their choice. Once the current president is gone, look for Democrats to split between San Francisco Democrats and centrist Democrats (working people)
I was born and raised in San Jose (silicon valley)
And have watched this crew for a decade plus (on other shows too)
But it really does seem some times like some in this crew are becoming increasingly out of touch and becoming the thing that "outsiders" (people outside these small bubbles) say people in San Francisco are.
I know for certain as a liberal leaning person living in the bay area that I'm not the only one that thinks this (about the whole "San Francisco culture").
More and more people can't relate to people based in San Francisco at all.. yes, they're still subscribers, but they scroll past the videos instead of pressing "play' right away like they may have in the past.

And again, I scroll down to make one joke & the comment section is filled with bandwagoning to hate on Tim.....
*sigh* this is what got him off of Screencast I think, but worst of all nobody ever criticizes what anybody else says, it's always Tim's stupid, Tim's wrong, Tim's so privileged. Greg basically said the exact same thing, but in his own Missouri way. I'm not saying go & jump down everyone's throats, but come on guys, he's had different experiences than me too, but that doesn't mean I'm going to trash on the guy every chance I get. We would all be saying the same thing as him if we lived the same life that he did. He's just speaking from experience, not some random article like Nick & Kevin, and not from a very lucky position like Andy. They all have pro's & cons to what they're saying, enough with the hatred for Tim.

Tim is such a hustling schemer lol I dont think he realizes how good he is at things like that and what he calls "just looking" for a lot of people is a very difficult thing to do. I've spent hours researching things and told a friend my best result, and he found one better in like 5 minutes just because he is good at that kind of thing.
Not to mention you say it's not that expensive, just live with people or in a garage. In other cities that's like considered being a bum practically lol.

SF is one of my FAVORITE places in the world (I'm a central California native) and it breaks my heart that SF is becoming what it is, but I agree with Tim. Step up. Support local businesses and say something when it's crunch time. And always remember what goes up must come down. What was once good can be good again.
