  • With the radio in hand and the transmitter repaired, it is time to venture into the aurora and look for caches. Only issue is that the area is wide open, and therein lies the dangerous cold.

If I could request one thing to change it would be to add more to the custom menu setting, the ability to make a custom run is great, it is what helps create community challenges and also personal ones. It make the game even more re-playable, but what I would like is to have even more customization setting. Give the ability to set a players load out, what clothes and items you have to start with, to set a spawn point beyond just what map to start in but the spot on that map. For example, Zak had a challenge last year that required the players to all spawn in the same place and we all were to play the game our way and Zak was going to compare play styles among experienced and novice players. This required some people to re-start the game several times to spawn in the correct spot, if this more customized menu were in place, Zak could have made a custom code to give everyone, could have given everyone the same load out, and the same spawn location to create the challenge to be on equal footing. What if you could set up a Blizzard only weather, or always foggy or for the NOGOA style players, be able to make a custom set up to lock all buildings, or restrict repairs or certain items... it would create even more community driven challenge that were set so that everyone starts in the same place and has the same load out. Challenges are great fun, and this ability would make them more fair and a little less RNG.
Zak, quit wasting so many many matches, this is not your style at all.... :)

I would change it so you could sleep anywhere without a bedroll, but with the associated risk of the lack of the warmth it brings. Took me 30 days into my current Loper run to find a bedroll, it broke the immersion that I couldn't sleep on the floor in front of a fire in a building on my trek to Forsaken Airfield

I do wish you could use the stars to navigate. Alternatively, I wouldn’t mind seeing natural resources such as rose hips, acorns, cat tails, etc to eventually respawn. Say 300 days or more after each harvest. Good players can already effectively survive indefinitely, so I doubt long duration natural respawns would make the game much easier.

As far as save scumming goes -- I don't know if I'd continue with the run in the actual event, but I'm afraid of heights and thinking that I might be able to hit escape before I hit the ground might be the only thing that gives me courage to go over some of those rope bridges! (It's impressive how much those scare me even on a computer screen -- I'm seriously thinking of making a character that stays in Ash Canyon that I can use just to do a crude kind of exposure therapy on myself.)

Something I would change in the game is making bases look nicer. Lots of them have broken doors, planks, spoons and other assorted junk that make bases look bad. Even if it costs time and you get no material out of it, I would appreciate the ability to "tidy up" the farm, trappers, the camp office. Also having the ability to build makeshift benches, shelves, or carpets to fill in those spots would be so cool. And I know there's mods out there that provide you the chance to decorate bases, but I'd appreciate a little something in vanilla.

The inclusion of a slight jump or hop mechanic for the player character could provide more fluid traversal over obstacles, enhancing the sense of immersion and allowing for greater exploration of the environment. Furthermore, an overhaul of the hunting mechanics could offer a more realistic and engaging survival aspect, potentially incorporating factors such as tracking, stealth, and improved animal behavior to create a deeper and more satisfying hunting experience.

The one thing I would wish for in The Long Dark? *Jumping*, hands down. It doesn‘t need to be gigantic leaps, little hops would do. I can deal with all of the compromises in terms of logic and realism in this fantastically atmospheric game. But that I cannot jump over a narrow gap for the life of me still irks me 1100 hours into it…

  • @Matt_Deluca
    @Matt_Deluca Год назад +7

You may be able to place books upright once the base customization is released. Of course, we still don't really now what that entails yet. But it's possible!
If there was one thing I could add to the game, it would be craftable candles made from rendered fat and maybe a bit of cloth. They would provide enough light to read or craft by at night, but would burn dimmer than other light sources we already have. They would also be easily blown out if used outdoors or by sprinting while carrying it. A 100% condition candle would burn for 6 hours.
For the most part, I share your feelings about the game being perfect as-is. Little things like this that add another layer of realism and utility while still maintaining balance can still have their place IMO. Great vid, Zak!

After one year and a half on a world wide pandemic, we all learn to avoid cabinf fever, hahaha... and the stuff I would add is, perhaps, some kind of skillset to climb. I mean, just like you learn to cook or to make a fire or to repair your clothes, it would be nice that the more you climb, the more you don't get so tired. It's a small detail but it would add A LOT to the experience. However, thanks Zak for another great video!

  • @CakeorDeath420
    @CakeorDeath420 Год назад +3

I'd bring in very simple and easily doable changes.
    1. If a torch is lit, the fire starting mechanism can start at torch and not matches. It's not like I'm going to light a torch, keep it aside and then light a match to start a fire.
    2. Some menus allow keyboard scrolling, some don't. eg: You can keyboard-scroll in the fire starting menu to select various items. But you can't keyboard-scroll in the cooking menu when you click on the 'cooking slot' and have to click 20 times to select what you want to place there. Same for selecting sewing or crafting options. Just make all of them scrolling by keyboard.
    3. Regrow the harvestable plants. This is a non issue; people have lived 1000s of days on current mechanism. It's just fun. Set the time to 250 days or something.
    Bigger changes:
    4. Now that there are carrots/potatoes, its only logical to have the ability to grow them indoors. There's soil outside, there are containers inside, plus its warmer. Have a green house a-la The Martian. There could be random 'crop' failures like mending fails, etc. But it could be a skill growth like other skills in the game. New books for this, etc. Could be interesting for the long game.

I would change (increase) the variety of hand held lighting in game. to me it seems very odd that there are no fat burning lamps or candles in The Long Dark. the only forms of lighting are matches, flares, torches, flashlight, and the lantern. but no candles, or glow sticks or even homemade candles from animal fat or something. a second pick for me is probably lack of long range visibilty improvement. a set of binoculars to help you see through fog or just further in general would be very nice.

If I could add anything, I would add a Compound Bow to the game. Not craftable but repairable (everything should be repairable) and would make hunting alot easier. It would kill a wolf in one hit, regardless of where you hit it and would kill a bear in 2 hits. Arrows for this would not break but are also not craftable (carbon fiber arrows from before the devastation). Maybe even have broadhead arrows that would always kill anything you hit, but ruin small game like rabbits
If I could change anything, I would change interloper to have all the same gear as the other difficulties, but in set locations that are extremely difficult to get to. Either guarded by alot of predators or require navigating a shifting maze (exact pattern is randomized each game so you cant just look up a map) or something like mementos, where you need to find pieces of the story behind the item in order to obtain it (think like the Signal Void thing where you need to investigate things and eventually get the location and key to the item)
If I could remove anything, I honestly cant think of anything I would want to remove. Nothing in the game makes me think "I think this isnt good for this game".
I already own all DLC, but I wanted to post this anyways as it could help someone else with their idea

The 12 hour days in TLD are very immersion breaking. You are supposed to be on a wintery island in Canada, but the sun behaves like you're on the equator with all the astronomical knowledge of Minecraft. Plus, the time after dark that you can still have some light partially implies that it is the summer, which other things in the game make clear that it is not.

A way to search the notes would be fantastic -- then I could e.g. just search for "hammer" to find all the places I've left a hammer. One thing - I would add an improvised compass to survive in blizzards and foggy areas. Additionally, paper (or cured animal skin) for notes and mapping, as well as empty plastic bottles for water. As for mechanics, descending on foot from vertical walls should be limited. You can descend from the Timberwolf mountain this way, but you can't step over a branch or a stone. New mechanics - perhaps it would be interesting to capture animals rather than killing them, such as domesticating reindeer or breeding rabbits/ptarmigans in Pleasant valley or other suitable locations.

I think a good quality of life change would be to make it so you don't use up a match until the torch is fully lit so people won't waste matches accidentally. Seems a small ask.

Okay please don’t give me anything BUT! If I could change anything in TLD I’d add a star mapping skill. The game is so beautiful at night, but when I first started playing I was PETRIFIED of going out and exploring because of the aurora wolves. I think the skill would work like this: you would map something during an aurora and get a skill gain. As the skill improves you get larger and larger areas of the map revealed, and eventually not need the aurora to map in dim lighting, BUT ONLY WHEN YOU MAP AT NIGHT! And at level five you would get that indicator that tells you where you are on the map but again, only at night. Does this make sense/sound cool or am I just insane?

One thing that bothers me that'd I'd like changed about the game is add an option in the pause menu to actually save the game manually. I don't really like having to go out and back in through a door and see double loading screens just to save, or like having to pass time or sleep if you're somewhere without shelter or in a cave. Not saying add save states or anything like that, but people who want to save scum the game are going to do it anyway so I don't see the point of the way it works now. Plus I've had the game crash a lot on me on PS4 and sometimes I lose upwards of 40 minutes of play time because I was outside the whole time and couldn't save manually at all. It's actually hurt my experience with the game a lot over the years.

If I were to change one thing, I think I would add a save system where you had to use a special limited item to save. Maybe you could gain more saves by surviving every xx days.
On the lesser important annoying side, I would like to remove dead bodies, especially from indoor locations.
You really took some risks today, going out tired during an aurora with an almost broken bow.

    I would change two things:
    1) I would like to see animal idle behavior be much more complex and less easily predicted. Not like dodging attacks, but in simple things like a pack decides to slowly walk the entire map rather than just sticking to the general area you found them. Or decide to run from you without aggression, or attack despite scaring them. Just more dynamic.
    2) I would like to see (and option for) random map generation. I don't like that mastery of this game seems to mostly be related to memorizing where things are or memorizing loot tables and spawn locations. You might not think of it that way, but it's essentially what that is. Just feels like it takes away some of the discovery aspect.

Maybe if you could build them faster, or if they would be more useful during a storm. Or if they didn’t break in what feels like 2 days. Imagine a makeshift base of igloo +rock pile + fire shielded by the igloo on one side

What is lacking, when you are in sandbox, is a dimension mental health. You could, in theory, survive during ten years or more, but if you are totally isolated, without human contact, you would become insane. You live in an hopeless land, with cold, lack of sun, lack of food and water and I don't count the many corpses frozen... You should become crazy. But thing as to listen radio during Aurora could up your mental health,(illusion of human contact with human voices), to have the possibility to have more light in your base to confort you, the possibility to dvelopp an hobby....
But, the better (in my opinion) would be the possibility to have a dog (adapted to the weather of course) or then the possibility to dress a very young wolf (that would imply animals with different ages). It would take time, food, water, but it wouldn't be so difficult if the possibility is allowed when you have 30 or 50 Days. The animal could to be useful, as pull a traineau, help to defend yourself against animal or to help hunting. But above all, the animal would kill the solitary mentality and would give to the character the possibility to not be alone by talking with it.
In the reality, to be forced in solitary situation during a long time is a torture and have serious impacts on the mental health. You can survive to the worst in the Long Dark. But what would happen if you couldn't survive to yourself ?

I like survival games but sometimes I have to be in the right mood to get going(looking at you neo scavenger) I'm loving the updates, especially adding more and more that isnt bare bones survival. Like cooking, love the curiosities to explore, even if there isnt a big payoff just looks fun. I hope at some point I get into the game myself but I really love your content. I love the atmosphere of the game; project zomboid is one of my fave games and like TLD, it does a fantastic job of being beautiful yet also foreboding and instilling a sense of hopelessness in the situation. Like zomboid, TLD is merely a story about how you will die. My friends love zomboid and we play co op often but I think TLD would be great fun in co op just because of how much there is to explore

I would add muscle mass to the stats substituting well fed. Exercising and sleeping after exercising while well fed, increase the muscle mass and being starved decrease muscle mass up until a limit. Faster decrease if you are starved and run, climb etc. Slower if you sleep. Higher muscle mass gives you higher stamina, faster run speed an more importantly more carrying weight. No more sudden 5Kg bonus but a slowly increasing bonus with the muscle mass, with a limit to e.g. +15Kg and decreasing speed of growth approaching the limit. Also a malus if you starve so much that you lose muscle mass below your starting muscle mass, with a maximum malus of let's say 10Kg and -50% stamina.
This will of course invalidate the starving trick of most players.
I am new to this channel and i watched only this series. I like that you explain many thing. Excuse me if you already said that, but i would like to ask one thing.
You don't fish a lot. Probabily because fish has a terrible calories/weight ratio. But with fish oil you can build mega torches and carry 2-3 of them instead of resorting to the luck and having to carry many normal torches. Also you could use more the storm lantern. What do you think?
