In this video, I am working on a 2013 Toyota Prius C with a failed nickel-metal hydride battery. The customer wanted to upgrade to the NexPower lithium version.
I'll cover removal, disassembly, reassemble, and installation. To top it all off I will take the car on a test drive to show how much better EV drive time we get with the new Lithium battery.
The installation is fast, easy, and cheaper than a new OE battery from Toyota.
This is a start to finish video installing a New NexPower Lithium Battery. Benefits of the NexPower lithium battery are:
Greater fuel economy
Modern Technology
Greater EV range
Better Acceleration
This episode will show how easy it is to install this new, modern battery, safely and easily, helping you get the most out of your aging Prius or other Toyota hybrid. NexPower offers Kits for Prius, including Generation 2, 3, V, and C versions.
If you have any comments or questions please feel free to leave them for me and I will respond as soon as I can. Thank you for watching!

It looks like you used the original fan, just cleaned, it out.
Something to note here is that Toyota has added a filter on all the Hybrid Battery cooling fan systems. I have a 2012, the dealer was able to sell me the filter for the fan. It clips on in place of that front cover on the fan itself. Easy worthwhile upgrade to keep the dirt out.
Thanks for sharing I will look to pick up a filter at the dealer as I go to replace the cells seeing my battery pack arrived today

If it helps the part # for the Prius C filter is,
- Mesh, Battery Cooling Blower
- Stock Code G923G52020
If you've got one a bigger Prius the part number might be different.
U could do it blindfolded, Pete. Could u turn up the volume on ur voice? Ur so soft spoken. U make it look so easy. Wished we had someone like u on the northeast coast. I appreciate all ur videos!
I am working on that blasted audio. It’s been the Bain of my existence with these videos. I end up cranking the volume up while editing so need a better solution.
Are you replacing the BMS? What's the chemistry? If LiFePO4, what protections does it have against low temperature charging and low temperature discharging?
Good video. What is done with the old battery components?
Old battery modules I am happy to take them off your hands if you need somewhere to send them to. I will pay shipping.
Wonderful video... keep it up...
hey, it's cool to see you here
Hey when are we getting together and doing videos?
Would you happen to know anyone that would install the new lithium battery and accept old core in Austin, TX? I didn't know if this is a service you were offering by chance.
What kind of mpg does the Prius C do now? I know the newer battery is lighter and more energy dense so I was hoping it would be significant.
I've read a lot about this. At most it's 3mpg better.
Thanks for the video! I just purchased this.. Wondering how it's honestly performing after 9 months. Take care
Still rockin’ customer loves the battery and also the MPG
@@TheHybridGuy awesome thanks for the quick reply. Just found your channel, and it's been helpful
Where did you bought this.. i currently looking for this battery pack for my prius c.. please help me where i can get one.
Mine just came in the mail today
Excelente. I would like to get a pack of these LiFePo battery for may Prius C. But I'm in Ecuador.
Don't you have to upgrade the computer software? Doesn't it still think it's controlling nihm battery?
from the battery OEM website:
Q: Do I need to make any modifications to my car to support the use of lithium?
A: There is no requirement for any changes to the software or hardware as each blade of the battery contains a specialized balancing circuit that ensures the optimal performance of each lithium cell. The vehicle is designed to operate the new battery in a similar manner as the NiMH battery but at a higher voltage, which encourages the usage of electric power.
Are you going to do an install for s Gen 2 Prius. I'm ready to buy. but would like to see how you go from 28 cells to 14 cells.
Yes I will be! I have it in the queue to do. Make sure you get one on order.
I found this video from a guy installing your battery kits. Looks simple.

Improved acceleration?
And how long do they last ?
10 years and counting. Oh and no capacity loss.
Hi
Can I install 2 hybrid battery on my Toyota prius?
Is it safe to have Lithium in the car cabin like that? If it combusts that's going to be not much protection for the driver or passengers. Also here in Australia we get heat up to 48C (118F) in Summer sometimes. That means the car left out in the sun can hit 60 or 70C. Can the Lithium battery cope with this kind of heat without failing??
LiFePo is very safe it won’t combust like lithium ion or lithium polymer
@@TheHybridGuy right. Good to know.
Does this battery increase the amount of regen brake capture?
It does not increase the amount of regen but it has a larger capacity.
how much per 1 cell
How many miles did you get once it is fully charged ?
3 miles
Do the batteries come pre balanced?
Yes! Ready to go.
How much should one expect to pay for parts and labor?
For a prius C to buy the pack and have it installed should be about $2000 max. Of you are within a reasonable driving distance I’d be happy to come swap it for you for less.

Have y’all put that battery in a Prius prime already?
Prius Prime is lithium from the get go no need to upgrade.
@@TheHybridGuy even the 2012 is lithium from the get go?
@@josiahcharlemagne4961 If it is the plug-in Prius then yes it is lithium.
Can I use this on the 2018 prius c model ?
Yes, and those batteries are in stock right now too. projectlithium.com/?ref=e9JRo
@@TheHybridGuy thank you! I'm definitely going to upgrade
Car is filthy dirty but good vid
It was terrible, cleaned it afterwords much nicer then.
@@TheHybridGuy Nice thanks im thinking about getting this battery when its back in stock sorry no negativity intended about your car i just get real OCD when i start working on it, thanks for the great vids
