    Why are these not in the 2024 RTS list? Criteria for an RTS game:
    1. Army micro (without control it's an auto battler)
    2. Resource collection (otherwise you're just deploying and fighting)
    3. Base-building (part of what RTS classically is)
    4. In real time (obviously)
    5. Camera far away (if 1st or 3rd person only it's a shooter)
    I need at least 4/5 to call a game 'RTS'. Genre names aren't literal dictionary definitions. 'Rock' has nothing to do with boulders. If literal, 'Real Time Strategy' would include every real time game. DotA? That's real time and is strategic.
    Example:
    Crusader Kings 3 is NOT an RTS. It's got base building with cities (3), in real-time (4), and a high camera (5), BUT it doesn't have resource collection (2) or unit micro (1), so only 3/5. Men of War 2 doesn't have resource collection or base building, so I don't label it an RTS either.

    You've been asking for a list of this subgenre, here it is! Hope you like it. The main question is, what makes an RTS? Typically, 'RTS' games have base-building and/or resource collection, so all these games don't focus on those. What do you think?

    • @Cenot4ph
      @Cenot4ph 10 месяцев назад

      These games are all part of the RTS genre, it's fairly broad

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  10 месяцев назад +5

      @@Cenot4ph Well it kind of boils down to this: if all RTT games are RTS games, why do we have an 'RTT' genre at all? Similarly, all RTS games are Strategy games, so should we not list RTS games and just list Strategy games? If the distinction doesn't matter, then that path leads to no genres existing at all because every genre is a subgenre.

    • @haazeMAX
      @haazeMAX 9 месяцев назад

      Hmm. I agree RTS is a subgenre of Strategy and RTT would be a subgenre of RTS. I think some of the genre naming issues comes from the conventional RTS so typically being a game where you harvest and mine, build buildings etc. So there is that expectation when you hear 'RTS', but really, IMO, there could be something called be 'RTS-classic' or 'RTS-conventional' which is a C&C like game and there could be 'RTS-based'. Or 'RTS-general', which would be the more open parent genre. Turn based versus real time is the big distinction for me anyway. TB is relaxed armchair general gaming maybe with a brew, realtime quickly becomes intense macro vs micro management, being several places on the map at once. It's a completely different mood I'm going to be in for choosing to play one or the other.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  9 месяцев назад +1

      @@haazeMAX Those are good names for clarity, but the main problem when it comes to coming up with better genre names is usage. No matter how good and sensible you name the genres, they don't work unless everyone knows about it and is on board with them. If I make a list for 'Conventional RTS', almost everyone would be confused and if I'm the only one calling those games that it'll never catch on. I've been trying to clarify 'simulation', 'simulator', and 'simulation game' for a decade and made no progress in getting people to agree haha

  • @HanakoSeishin

    I would say the difference between RTS without base building and real time tactics is that tactics needs an active pause. Without active pause you can't really carefully give different orders to different units, as situation will change faster than you give orders, so the only thing you can do is drag a selection box over all your units and right click a random enemy unit. And that's classic RTS gameplay with no tactics involved.

    • @HanakoSeishin
      @HanakoSeishin 9 месяцев назад

      @@Zen2k4r- I'm not sure I understand the question. You want me to list some examples of real time tactics with active pause? I would then name UFO: Aftermath and Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun.

      @Zen2k4r- 9 месяцев назад

      @@HanakoSeishin I'm playing call to arms it's a great strategy game. But if you know any good strategy games that would require the use of the brain (most strategy games nowadays don't) then I'm interested

    • @HanakoSeishin
      @HanakoSeishin 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Zen2k4r- I'm not into RTS really, as my brain doesn't work if the game isn't paused, so all I can say is that Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun is inspired by an old game called Commandos, which is all the way from 1998, but there are more modern games inspired by it, a couple by the same developers as Shadow Tactics (and these are all considered pretty good), and more by other developers too (with varying degree of success), some different settings too (original Commandos was WW2, Shadow Tactics is feudal Japan, others by the same developers are wild west and ghost pirates, and outside of that I think there was even an old Star Trek one).
      Another brain heavy tactical game that just came to my mind is Frozen Synapse. It's a mix between real time and turn based, as each turn is several seconds of real time, where in the beginning of each turn you give commands to your units and then see how they execute them in real time, but you can't change anything until next turn, so you have to think these seconds through carefully (as you also don't know what enemy will be doing during them).

      Have you played Shadow Gambit? I've just gotten another character and am really liking all the crazy supernatural powers they give you. For example there's John Hughes Mercury who can hide anywhere with one of his abilities and pop back up in a radius around his initial departure point. He can also kill an enemy and hide the body automatically. That and your enemies, the inquisition, have certain enemies who are linked so as long as one is alive they can resurrect the other. It's filled with neat ideas, and I hope future rtt games will take at least some inspiration. Mimimi will be missed indeed.

    Hey Zakh! You seem to have alot of knowledge of upcoming strategy/tactics games and I deeply appreciate that!
    I have a question: a hundred thousand players just lost their 2nd home, since our all beloved game "Guns Up" did shut down on 12/14/23. Throughout this game I met more than thousand players, from every part of the world, during the last 8 years... but now we all have lost our microcosm, our "Guniverse" as I always called it. So, my question is: Do you know if there will come some similar title, or any other alliance based rts title on Playstation?? I really hope you will research this, because a hundred thousand players lost their home and that is not exaggerated. Thanks and hope to read from you soon!

    I have zero respect for any game/game developer that alienates a huge sector of the gaming community: Mac users. And several of these games do that. Not sure what devs are thinking by doing this. Oh well, their loss - Mac users have plenty of other game options.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  8 месяцев назад

      The only real thought is that it costs money to port it to Mac and it costs money to maintain it on another platform. You have to pay people to do these things and often either indie devs don't have the budget or the publishers don't want to spare the budget.

      I am sure there is plenty of money to be made from Mac users as well@@GamerZakh

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  8 месяцев назад

      It's not about money to be made, publishers count profit as loss if there is more profit to be had elsewhere. Imagine this:
      Lets say it costs $100,000 to make and maintain a Mac version. The estimated money they could make from Mac users is $300,000, so a profit of $200,000. Sounds good right? On the other hand, the publisher finds that they could spend that $100,000 on the PC users on new content and they could sell that new content for $400,000. Now, making the Mac version isn't $200,000 profit, it's a $100,000 loss!
      That's how publishers think and do things. The very fact that they don't make a Mac version is proof that they won't make enough money from Mac users. Remember it's not about making money, it's maximising money. And in the case of publishers, they have all the say. It doesn't matter if the developers want to make a Mac version, the publisher won't allow it.
      EDIT: RUclips is hiding Marc's last reply, it just said:
      "I am sure there is plenty of money to be made from Mac users as well @GamerZakh"

      @@GamerZakh I think that’s a bit of a stretch for new content. There are many disillusioned gamers who see “new content “ as something that should have been included in the original game and refuse to purchase it. Besides, Mac users may also purchase new content! In the end, there is a huge amount of Mac users who will simply spend their money on other games. And because Macs are more expensive than the average PC, if you can afford a Mac you are more likely to afford the DLC

      @@markc8401 I've been watching the games industry for 12 years. I've worked in the games industry. I've asked developers personally. The whole disillusioned gamers thing doesn't matter. So many are shovelling money to publishers for expansions, stuff packs, DLC, lootboxes, season passes, special editions, premium currency, and so on that publishers are raking it in more than ever before. You and I don't do that, but they do, and that's all that matters.
      Again, if there was enough money to be made from Mac users, publishers would jump on that. Why wouldn't they? The simple fact they don't is proof there isn't enough money to be made, but I can grab stats. Also keep in mind, since ever, Mac has been known to be "bad for gaming". For whatever reason. That means gamers who buy games and DLC are far more likely to buy a Windows PC instead of a Mac. Yeah Mac users got cash, but Mac users aren't gamers. I live with 2 Mac users right now, neither of them game.
      So not only is Windows right now 10 times more popular than Mac (based on recent stats), a higher proportion of gamers are on PC. Steam users are 97% Windows... 97%! Mac isn't even second place, Linux is! So although 10% of computers are Mac, only 1.2% of gamers are on Mac. Even if every Mac gamer bought something, it wouldn't count for a fraction of PC users. If just 1.5% of Windows players buy something, it would account for more sales than all Mac gamers combined.

How about this list of life sims: ruclips.net/video/zrcGY211xko/видео.html Those aren't about warfare. Or maybe you prefer business tycoons? Here's a list of those: ruclips.net/video/5RsifmvdMVQ/видео.html Also not about warfare, you can run a food truck if you like. What kind of game are you looking for? Maybe you want to foster a frog sanctuary and restore the wetlands? Check out Kamaeru: A Frog Refuge.

    given your stupidly loose definition of what a 'tactics' game is, call of duty might as well be on this list. it's a tactics game, bc you get to choose your weapon adn what you shoot at. get it, tactics guys.
    you fail at understandingbasic things.

      Just for full reference, you can see how I split the Strategy genre in this video: ruclips.net/video/yrC4YLQl01Q/видео.html Each subgenre has a strict definition, and you won't see Call of Duty in any of them.
