Investigate how American collections of Central European drawings were assembled and assess the role of drawing in the creative processes of Albrecht Dürer and his contemporaries. Introduction by exhibition curators Stijn Alsteens and Freyda Spira, Department of Drawings and Prints, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Beyond Dürer: Central European Drawings from 1550--1700 in the United States
Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Frederick Marquand Professor of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University
Albrecht Dürer and his contemporaries have long been regarded as the epitome of German art, but rich artistic traditions also existed in Central Europe during the later sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Drawings by artists from this period were purchased by early American collectors, and interest has increased in the last few decades. Examine this history and consider how it relates to the continuing reevaluation of art from Central Europe.
    Master Underdrawings
Maryan Ainsworth, curator, Department of European Paintings, MMA
We are accustomed to enjoying and studying artists' renderings on paper, but many master drawings lie hidden beneath the surface of paintings. These range from mere preparatory sketches to fully worked-up drawings of great refinement. Discover some of the most extraordinary examples of such treasures in the early German paintings collection at the Metropolitan Museum.

I think the introduction to this lecture is extraordinary. It is done with such clarity of thought and speech, and reveals a very organized conception of the subject, the historical context, the museum and its background in collecting German drawings of the period and the relation of the drawings esthetically to the realm of all drawings in the museum's collections. And it is delivered with a very pleasing modesty, respectful of the subject. There is a certain liveliness in his thinking and delivery that I think makes his thoughts enter memorably in a listener's mind. Without disparaging the main lecturer in the least, who also did an excellent job, I would like to hear the whole lecture done again by this one person. (Disclosure: I am not related to or acquainted with this person.)

"The idea that art is only valid if it's purely representative of one nation has died by now"... I wish. I think that, and other anti-individualistic and, frankly, discriminatory ideas *were* mostly dead circa 2010, but now, in 2019, they're back, hard, and they're promoted by all sides of issues. In fact, all sides of any issue in 2019 fail to see any alternative to those ideas. It's because people nowadays are extremely passive, accept any ideas that are put in front of them, and don't have the attention span to watch a video over five minutes.
I feel like videos like this could save the world if people would still make them.
