Canada's Social Justice Tribunals work on the principle that you can force people to respect others by punishing them over even trivial misunderstandings or honest expressions of opinion.

Welcome to the backfire effect. Amazing how people are flabbergasted by how extremism has grown world wide yet again. Strange how that happens when you make victims of innocents using nothing more solid than intuition and feeling.
My only interaction with the HRC was when my eldest daughter was born. I told them I had been fired for attending the hospital during her birth. I was told that my wife would be protected, but as a white male, I was not protected.
All part of my white, male privilege I guess.
Must be in Canada where every group is protected except the straight white male. That literally is the law in Canada.

Having read the act, in Ontario a white male can legally be discriminated against.
We are privileged that way. 🙄

I taught at a private school, grade 10 advanced math. My degree is in English literature, but they needed a math teacher.. and I needed a job. It was around the time final grades were due. The school was well aware of my wife’s condition and (I thought) the reason for my absence . I called them from my house as we left for the hospital. I left a message with the student who was at the switchboard.
This is 26 years ago.
I finished the final grades while my wife was in labour and handed them in later in the same day my daughter was born.
I was fired for “missing a critical deadline” buy about 2 hours.
The marks were due at 12:01PM and were delivered at around 2:30PM. I had to drive from the hospital out to the school. (An old pig farm converted into a school)
Personally I think I was fired because I recommended a student being “held back” and attend summer school.
I found out later, from another student, that his classmate had been given a pass and that my grade was changed and my recommendation denied.
I called HRC who enthusiastically told me that my wife could not be fired, however I did not have the same protection.
All part of my male privilege I assume.
The school is still operating, Robert Land Academy (reform school for rich boys)

The term “tribunal” strikes fear in anyone who knows the dark and bloody histories of China, Chile, or Russia. How a mostly ‘nice’ country like Canada can adopt the term makes me shudder!

Unlike the British rule of law followed by most of the rest of the world, the American rule of law doesn't require the losing party to pay the court costs for the winner. This encourages frivolous lawsuits that are designed to bleed the other party financially or intimidate them. Who benefits? Lawyers and the bloated justice industry.
What if hundreds, or tens, or even two or three people accuse the tribunal system of discrimination and injustice?

Aside from the obvious Stalinist aspects of this that will inevitably lead to gulags; the immediate economic aspects are just sad. Under such a system, it would be idiotic to hire any woman or minority or really anyone if you can keep from it. If I were a Canadian businessman I would be looking to outsource everything and do as much business as possible within the jurisdiction of a US state.

The tribunals sound like the modern version of Salem Witch hunt and the Spanish Inquisition combined.

I don't understand why you're being accused of a human rights violations and hate crimes just for speaking about the humans rights violations and hate crimes men receive you've never been hateful to any demographic you've just insisted they're bigoted biases against supposed privileged classes are just as bad has any bigoted biases seems like you're actually in trouble for not being hateful enough for the supposed morality police

HOLY ****!!! I'm going to have to do a little research to ensure that what you're saying is true. This is scary. I'm an artist. How do artists navigate a world that holds a hammer above their heads when they want to express their concerns on complicated and emotional issues? Artists are already pressured by the gallery system and educators to keep their art open to subjective interpretation. As a result contemporary art is the safest art in the world. Are we going to become the kind of artists China has, ones afraid to hit the red line drawn by the government? Cross it and you're in jail or dead. What happens to artists in Canada if they have a strong commitment to defend their beliefs, ones that don't align with the self-elected few social justice warriors? I can tell you. We'll move to the United States or Europe. And we'll start defending Canada at a safe distance.
