It's crazy the drop in production value between Overwatch Apex and OWL. Not hiring OGN was one of Blizzard's worst choices

yep. APEX was in every way better than OWL, its really a shame that APEX stopped once OWL took over.

To add context to danteh's salary. Hydron has mentioned that players get payed extra for being great personalities. Danteh was a pretty popular player at the time so it would make sense he was being payed extra. I mean hydrons example was super being a great personality would probably be payed alot even if he wasnt as good as he was stricly due to him boosting the shock brand.

Not surprising. Its also true of the Starcraft 2 "pro scene". Seems like a pattern.
An absolute artificial joke that fell apart just as soon as Blizzard stopped pumping money in to make it not look like a burning house.

My favourite part is how ow players just take it down every hole from blizzard and team 4 for some of the most mid gameplay of 2024 and continue to pay 25 for a single skin 😂

I think the argument against super being placed lower because he was on super teams is kinda a bullshit answer. The best overwatch teams historically have always been super teams when u consider it. Season 1 Spitfire you said. Like to place players lower because they were on generally talented teams is kinda disengenous to more than half the top players on lists were on teams stacked with talent. There arent many good teams out there where there was a clear cut talent gap in the roster. Even when it seemed like that, a lot of the time it was just players who werent considered that great playing really good and at that top level, they just werent expected to do that.

dafran on Selfless before his ban is probably the best player I ever seen. He would troll on stream and still get rank 1 on multiple accounts, would boost people to top 10, he was a hard carry on Selfless and when he wasn't carrying as hard Sinatraa would step in. Nobody had as good mechanics and flank timings as dafran in my opinion. The same team that had dafran and Sinatraa also had players like Dhak and Michael3D and Kresnik who were never even remotely as competent as players. Honestly, put Sinatraa on Rogue and I think he does just about as well as SoOn, and obviously dafran was light years better than AKM. It's a shame Overwatch League happened after his prime when he wasn't the best in the world anymore.

I remember checking the OWL rosters sometime during season 2 or 3 and seeing no western players aside from Danteh. Have no interest following an esport with no relatable personalities.

ya same. That's the main reason I never cared for pro ow even tho I've followed and competed in other esports. It's why I like watching dota>league. It's not just chinese/korean teams farming everyone for years. definitely respect the skill they have it's just not super entertaining when there's basically 0 relatability and teams from ur region don't win anything either.

The truth is people will always ask about the big name streamers because they've watched them play the most. It doesn't matter who the literal best player is if they only played in OWL and had no viewer-base otherwise. Hence why people like Chipsa got crazy contracts to join the league. They need to make money, so they hire the streamers, but the streamers aren't as good. Blizzard needs to make it easier to watch and get to know these players. Especially for an audience that doesn't speak Korean, it's harder to relate to these fully Korean teams even if they're insanely talented. Not saying it shouldn't be a meritocracy.

Soon was always underrated by a lot of people. Back when he played on NA because of OWL format I would run into him. Easily the best Widow player I've ever played against. I also agree that it's hard to rank players the last 2 seasons of OWL. I think a lot of talent left by then so it was not competitive at all compared to earlier seasons. I think you were a really good player too right before you joined OWL and constantly held 4.5 on Doom/Genji/Hanzo. The game just went to shit 2020 onwards sadly.

I don't really think it was the pay that was the problem. They paid people a lot back when OW was extremely popular and selling merch and making $ from adsense back then was pretty easy. The problem in my eyes is that overwatch 1) did not have a good pro pipeline (it was actually quite bad) 2) overwatch admittedly mishandled their brand and failed to capitalize on it's early success in terms of marketing, and 3) finally, the patches were sometimes abysmally bad and either made huge shakeups in the pro scene, or just made the pro leagues not all that exciting to watch.
Those 3 things together were a death sentence from the start.

Overwatch esports felt like american football. One big franchise that didnt allow for up and coming teams to enter the pro league and constantly shut down other orgs trying to boost the scene. Its one reason cs is so popular as an esport, any team could win qualifiers and win a major and some of these majors while supported by valve arent directly managed by them

Overwatch League failed because Overwatch failed. The problem with eSports is that you aren't going to have a sports culture around it other than a bunch of nerdy gamers who actually play the video game. It isn't like soccer where it's a worldwide fascination and everybody can watch it and understand it, other players or just regular spectators, and where there's merchandise sold everywhere that has your favorite player's number on a jersey, etc. You can't really go up to just any person in the mall and be like, "hey, whose your favorite eSports player?" like you can ask "hey, whose your favorite basketball player?" Even if they don't watch basketball, they can probably name somebody like Michael Jordon. Nobody in the real world knows who Faker is or who Profit is and if you tell them they're the best video game players, they're going to think it's more pathetic than actually cool.
We still have generations of people who think video games are for children and who think that video games are a gateway to violence, so the only eSports that really succeeds are in popular video games that everybody plays, like Counter-Strike or League of Legends, simply because there's enough of a gaming community to be interested in watching their favorite streamers compete at the highest level. Blizzard should have never centered Overwatch around tournaments and should just focused on making the game fun for everybody.
