  • In this episode we take a look at Professor Hojo, the quiet catalyst to the drama of Final Fantasy 7. Hojo serves an antagonist force in several subtle ways; as Sephiroth’s father primarily, but also for his kidnapping Aeris, poisoning Cloud Strife, experimenting on Red XIII, and his issue with Vincent Valentine and Lucrecia.
In this Professor Hojo analysis I cover:
    The professor Hojo story
    Professor Hojo and Lucrecia
    Hojo and Vincent Valentine
    Hojo as Sephiroth’s father
    Professor Gast and Aeris
Cloud Strife and the Nibelheim Incident
    Hojo FF7R appearance
Potential for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake
    Jenova Reunion theory

He's basically FF VII "Bigger Bad" next to Jenova! The two are the largest reasons for Sephiroth's fall into villiany as well as being his biggest aids to his end goal! But at the end of the day! Sephiroth is the big bad because Godhood became "his" endgoal! As I remember him siccing Jenova Absolute on you was to show it no longer was in control of his actions (it was instead the reverse) and Hojo honestly only wanted Sephiroth to succeed out of his "scientific curiosity!" (Every bad thing that has happened that has his hand in it was ALL FOR THAT FUCKING CURIOSITY!) so it didn't matter to him how things ended for him as long as "he is proven right!" by his greatest creation! His son succeeds in becoming a god!
Don't know if there was any change in their relationship! But I'm sure there was no love lost between the father-son! They were using each other and they both were aware of it.

I don’t think he’s the “real” villain of ff7 but he is a sociopathic scientist. I hope that in the final fantasy 7 remake shows that after his boss fight his soul will be unable to return to the lifestream due his experiments, lack of humanity and desire for Gaia’s knowledge, but his soul will be punished by the goddess of the planet Gaia, hojo will be sent to a place similar to hell where he will be punished for arrogance and for making the people he met suffer so he can suffer for all eternity.

@@rileyduncan3927 Would love that outcome for him!
Hojo and Jenova are considered Seven's "Bigger Bad" for a reason! Sephiroth would never have been nor reach the level of threat he became, much less been set on the path he took if not for their actions! Hojo more then Jenova as Jenova was only using what she/it got access to in Sephy! The foundation in which was Hojo! And the worse things is when you think on it! How much was deliberate and how much was "Let's go with it!" (As I doubt Hojo predicted "everything" This is the guy who would commit crimes against humanity simply because he was "curious and wanted to see the results of a thought he had in his head at the time! Team Fourstar and CloudStrife8 There abridged versions of the man, no matter which painted him quite well! Whatever it's uping his creep factor in the case of Fourstar or making him similar to Aqua teen Hunger force's "Dr Weird" with an equal mix of comedy....and horror with the whole "For Science!" mind set and love of experimenting on living TEST SUBJECTS! Seven Remake felt like a mix of both! WITHOUT THE COMEDY FACTOR!)
It would be funny if Dirge of Cerburus is still canon! It would mean that "digital upload of himself" is (or was) the "last remnant of that monster!" (Since if what you described happened! It means nothing of him remained but that...up till Vincient destroyed him for good! I mean Sephiroth fucking still exists within the Lifestream after all after everything he did in the main story! Even President Shinra who was purposely killing the planet in the name of profit and power! was still brought into the lifestream! Worse hell he got was being stuck in limbo not accepting the fact Sephiroth killed him already! And who knows how long between his death and Aerith's he's been stuck in that situation! And likely still was while Aerith was doing her own thing in the Lifestream between her death and the final battle!) If so then good!

Even Red XIII's. Almost everything awful that transpires is a result or knock-on-effect of his scientific meddling and curiosity. His desire for science and 'just wanting to find out what will happen' is so great it destroys any and all sense of morality a normal person would have possessed.

I think the reason Hojo set up most of the events of the game is because he wants to extend his knowledge of the planet, destroy the planet and achieve perfection but the truth is Hojo doesn’t realize that nothing is perfect in this world or other world’s. And he may think Sephiroth was his pawn but I think Hojo was being by sephiroth as well, in other words both Sephiroth and Hojo were using each other and both were well aware of it.

Seen an absolutely interesting theory on the ff7 remake sub on reddit that claims Hojo was responsible for the events of the Nibelheim incident.
Honestly I believe the theory because it's so fucking believable it's crazy. It argues that why the fuck would Shinra send Sephiroth to Nibelheim to investigate a reactor Malfunction knowing all to well that Jenova, Sephiroth's "Mother" was currently held their. The official records are that Sephiroth's mother died giving birth.
This coupled with the fact that extremely sensitive information on project J were so easily accessible in Shinra manor leading to Sephiroth finding this information.
The theory states that Hojo orchestrated the events of the Nibelheim incident in order to research the reunion theory. Hojo was literally the first Shinra official on the scene after the incident to take Cloud and Zack away to experiment on with Jenova cells.
Hojo was the reason all of this happened

So I bring this up all the time, but one of the biggest reasons I simply adore FFVII is how it integrates a lot more horror into its plot than it ever gets credit for - especially in relation to Hojo who seems to be just ripe for picking apart in terms of genre influences. I always thought of him as sort a JRPG Herbert West or something.

Ha, yeah there's definitely some Re-animator vibes to Hojo's characterisation. The music and atmosphere was pretty freaky in that sequence.

Sephiroth is a nihilist, a tyrant, a narcissist and a murderer, but he does display complex human emotions at times. I can’t help feeling that Hojo is somehow worse. Everything that he says and does seems to come from a completely ruthless, twisted, perverted and heinous place - particularly with wanting to breed Nanaki’s species with Aerith, the Vincent and Lucrecia stuff, and what he does to Sephiroth as a foetus. He is/was a truly evil, unambiguous, and inhumane person, who was the catalyst for many of the negative events which then play out. A real villain, who deserved a painful and miserable death.

His personnality is never really developed beyond the "mad scientist" trope and the opposition you rightfully highlight between him and Pr. Gast can really be summed up as good vs evil. He's quite disappointing for a FF villain because he seems to be evil just for the sake of it. And as another commentator pointed out, his relationship with Lucretia appears totally unbelievable as a result.

I agree! Mostly every bad thing that's happened (especially meteorfall) and to most of the characters has all been that sick mad scientist freak HOJO! Aerith's parents Professor Gast and Ifalna, Vincent, Lucrecia, Sephiroth, Zack, Cloud and Red Xlll.
See Hojo's always had his own sick mad scientist agendas for his research on the Certa and Jenova. First he and Lucrecia used their son for the Jenova project and she never even got to hold him once. She wasn't even sure she wanted to do that and when Vincent asked she just pushed him away. Then I guess it was Hojo who named their son Sephiroth and all he told him about his mother was that her name was Jenova that's all and that was a LIE! It was also the reason he went mad in the first place cause before that he was a hero of the Wutai war until all that research he did on Jenova thinking she was his mother in the basement of Nibelheim's shinra manor.
Then for Hojo's Cetra research he first had Professor Gast killed and took his wife Ifalna and daughter Aerith away to Midgar so they could be experimented on and so they could help Shinra to find the so called promised land which wasn't even real. Then they somehow escaped but Ifalna was either weak or injured when they reached the sector 5 train station and just before she died Ifalna told a lady named Elmyra to take Aerith somewhere safe.
Then after the Nibelheim incident Hojo took Zack and Cloud for his reunion theory experiment and attempted to make Cloud a Sephiroth clone by injecting Jenova cells into him he but saw Cloud and Zack as failures so he just sealed both of them away in pods in the basement of shinra manor for 5 years. Then when they finally woke up Zack seemed okay but Cloud was exposed to mako for so long he was in a vegetable state for a while Zsck had to carry him all the way to Midgar but was then killed by shinra troops and Cloud finally came around but his memories were all mixed up, having a dickhead attitude and he was having PTSD about Sephiroth. Little did he know he had become a puppet of Jenova and his whole journey to pursue Sephiroth was a sham cause really he was being summoned by him to the nothern crater and to give him the black materia so he could summon meteor and that put the whole planet in danger.
Then back in Midgar Hojo was attempting to help Sephiroth by giving him more energy with the mako cannon not even caring what happens to Midgar or the planet and that was just CRAZY!!!
Then in FF7 Dirge of Cerberus Hojo was dead but he somehow got into Weiss's body ans attempted to use him to come back to life but Vincent stopped him and Omega.
See as you said it's always been HOJO who's been the main villain of FF7!
