Interesting that the owner is a member of the RYS and the vessel is still registered in London. Old money one suspects but in any event, a fantastic restoration. Thank you for posting this. She makes just about everything else in that dock look crass.

To the best of my knowledge, there are four gorgeous steam yatchs built for the luxury class, and still chugging today: SS Delphine, Cangarda, beautiful Ena, and 1904 Medea, at the San Diego Maritime Museum which I am a seaman apprentice. Yes, the SS Delphine is a super yatch but all of them were built for the super class clientele.

Such a beautiful yacht. I just watched the video you did about S/Y Athena and I too love the early motor yachts and the traditional sailing yachts. There's something so romantic about the connection you have with the wind and the sea when you travel that way. All you can hear are the sails above and the waves below. There's a stunning classically designed superyacht called Nero I think you'd really like too. I think she's 90 meters and available for charter but I'm not sure who with. It'd be great to see a video on her. I love your channel, not too techy and boring but plenty of information a good variety of content and enjoyable to watch, thank you.

The El Mahrousa, currently serving as the Egyptian presdential yacht, was launched in 1865. At 479 feet, it's pretty super (though it was closer to 400 feet back in the just-after-the-American-Civil-War days), and went through the sorts of refits that, say, replaced paddle wheels with propellers and steam engines with diesel.
So no, the Shemara - old and neat though she is - has quite a few decades to go to catch up to the oldest (currently in use) superyacht in the world.

If you don't mind could I please ask you a question. I've seen the Captain stay with the boat from the beginning of her construction. Is it common for the crew to bounce around from ship to ship and not have a permanent spot. Is it the owner/captain that hires the crew or do you work for a private company that places you with a boat,, do you have a say as to what boat you would like to join? Thank you so much for bringing these videos and sharing your journey, I'm a fanatic when it comes to these big girls, your videos are about as close as I'll ever get to see never mind going aboard one of them, I do have the salty water running through me.

We were employed in the 1990's to weld new anodes on her hull when she was stored in Oulten Broad. She had been there for years many years we were told with only the then Captain as a permanent guardian. He said she had developed engine problems many years previous and had not moved since. The original anodes had depleted and the hull was so thin in places there was always the danger of burning through as we wet welded onto the single skin hull below the waterline. It did happen on the very first anode near the stern and the small store cupboard inside the vessel sprung a temporary but worrying leak (until we fixed her), not a great start. After a couple of days with no more incidence and once finished we were given a tour of her by the captain. It was like stepping back in time. Even the electrical items , washing machines, kettles lights etc were all of the same 1950-60 era. Inside she was in good condition as I remember but one that sticks in my mind was the smell. The inside smelt like cigars, maybe very ancient long ago smoked expensive cigars 🙂. She was a beautiful vessel even as she sat hidden away suffering from minimum maintenance and almost forgotten by the world and I often wondered what happened to her. I am so pleased to see she is now taking pride of place amongst the superyachts of the world.

A truly elegant "classic" motor yacht, built of course for Sir Bernard and the "notorious"
Lady Docker. However I must take issue with your statement about her being the first
"Superyacht". For instance there is Lady Yule's motor yacht, "Nahlin" launched some 7 years earlier and at 300 ft. somewhat longer than "Shemara". "Nahlin" cannot be ignored if only for her "infamous" Adriatic cruise in 1936, where the then Prince of Wales, soon to be King Edward Vlll(briefly) entertained his then Mistress, Mrs. Simpson publicly.. Of course the largest at the time was the massive Savarona, at 4600 +tons and 446 ft.long, built by Blohm & Voss, for American heiress Mrs. Emily Cadwalader, perhaps the rightful first "modern" Superyacht...?

I don't get the menacing, anachronistic RIB tenders? You would think someone that had a love for this yacht would have chosen something more fitting, you could do the painted carbon mast trick if you really needed new here. Great chuckle at the finish watching the crew cut-off his path when he landed the fenders, and repeated!

Amazing refit, but I don’t believe it’s the oldest… if I am not wrong, Egyptian super yacht El Mahrousa is the oldest being built in the 1800s…

A great vessel has been officially ruined .... The thing that makes more sense now is to restore her to her original 1938 conditions as soon as possible including the new dreadful power plant with the pods removed and the rudder brought back

In short, no. Quite a few older out there. MALAHNE, HAIDA, DELPHINE, CACOUNA, MARIE, FAIRLADY, NAHLIN & MARALA all predate SHEMARA. VITA/ARGOSY is still out there as a viable restoration for someone too.

This is not the oldest. We have now a yacht on refit, named vagrant. This ship is build in 1913.

A beautiful boat, rather spoiled by that modern bulbous bow and azipods. While they may make life easier for the captain, I do worry what kind of damage azipods will do to a hull designed for a regular propellor shaft.

It is obvious, watch her beginning to aproach her berth, that the azipods are of great benefit. Perfectly logical modification as far as I'm concerned. Well done!
