  • The 2005 Wests Tigers were the great entertainers of the NRL. As they dazzled their way through the competition a young player by the name of Benji Marshall left all footy fans in awe with his silky style of play.
    Before the merger club earned their lone premiership, the path to success was highlighted by a Round 21 match against Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks which saw all their stars shine brightly and Marshall in particular showcase his brilliant ability.

    Sharks fan here - went to this game, and was absolutely furious at the end! We got hammered. Watching it again now, Tigers were just incredible that year. Benji stepping shark after shark is burned into my eyes....

    He may not have been the same player at the back end of his career but young Benji was a force of nature. There was only 1 player all the kids wanted to be in 2005. Benji Marshall put butts on seats wether you were a Tigers fan or not.

  • @BlueMoonday19

    Noob question here, from a long time watcher, first time asker. Why did the keep the Tigers as the clubs nickname after the merger?

    • @liamjamieson8842
      @liamjamieson8842 2 года назад +1

      They kept wests and used the nickname from balmain. Very smart decision Balmain in not the nursery of players it used to be. The merger had to (and still does) need to look to western (particularly south western) Sydney for the future.
      Basing in in balmain and being called the magpies would be a terrible decision.
      The only other way for them to keep the magpies name was for the club to just be called wests magpies which would have never been approved as it was a joint venture hoping to keep the identity of both great foundation clubs. Yes magpies are majority owners now but that was not the case at the creation on the joint venture.
      Fun fact: Parramatta floated the idea of a merger with balmain where they would have become the Parramatta Tigers but this porposal was more of a takeover than a joint venture

      @@garybaltiejus7248 they did back in the day. Wests did not meet the requirements to play in 2000, Balmain did. Balmain could have played on without the joint venture but Wests could not. However Balmains financial situation got worse over the following years and now Wests own 90% of the Wests tigers. Balmain could not financially support a nrl club by themselves currently
