- Bare Ghulam Ali Khan was called the 'jagat ustaad' (everyone's teacher) in the United India. He chose Pakistan over India after Partition despite repeated requests by Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru to stay. But a Pakistani bureaucrat made him quit his beloved country. He was among the first to realise Pakistan wouldn't be a great place for the artists to thrive.

There are thousands or millions of people like you who have passed BA in this country but Bade Ghulam Ali is one. An utterance of incomparable worth.
The saddest moment in history of Pakistan. People cannot even begin to understand the loss it was for Pakistan. Still I am extremely happy that Bade Ghulam Ali shb went to India because had he stayed in Pakistan he would have been forgotten and Pakistan would have wasted another big name to celebrate besuras like Aima Baig in the name of music. As a Pakistani I cannot thank India enough for giving the legend the respect and honor that Bade Ghulam Ali Khan shb deserved and preserved his legacy that a person like me can enjoy in Pakistan. All differences aside one cannot even begin to praise the way India treated Bade Ghulam Ali Khan shb that Gandhi g asked Bade Ghulam Ali Khan shb to perform before his speech and Pandit Nehru stood at the gate and waited because Bade Ghulam Ali shb had begun his music. Such respect by the likes of Gandhi g and Pandit Nehru and here a babu though to be above Bade Ghulam Ali g. What a tragedy for Pakistanis like me. But I am happy that an artist like Bade Ghulam Ali Khan g got the respect and recognition he deserved.
Pakistan was fortunate to have the good artiste and connoisseurs in the beginning but soon lost their legacies to nepotism. We still had Ustad Salamat Ali Khan shb, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan g and Bade Fateh Ali Khan, Roshan Ara Begum g and many more but Pakistan continues to treat true art like shit and celebrate besuras all over. God protect us!
Why Pakistan lose all the artists like Sahir and others.

I had read an interview with Ali Sardar Jafri in Outlook magazine back in 1997, on the occasion of India's 50th anniversary of Independence. Bade Ghulam Ali khan had migrated to Pakistan sometime after partition and was performing at a function. He started singing "Mohe chhedo na Nand laal" when he was rudely stopped by the organiser, Muhammad Ali ,who told him, "Kuchh 'Pakistani' music bajaiye!" To which Khan sahab responded, "Meri gardan na marodo Muhammad Ali!" and left the function. He later migrated to India and used to advise other Pakistani singers to do the same. I think it was Salaamat Ali Khan, my memory fails me, who was quoted in another article in the same issue, who said that Khan sahab told him, "Come to India. In Pakistan you will only find people who listen to Qawwali!"
I heard that he has been asked to replace the word "RAM" from the song "Yad Piya ki aye" or remove the word
I had read that during one concert he sang one composition hailing kanha that is lord Krishna. Someone objected n ustad ji decided to move to India. My pranaam to the great soul.

respect to india and indians who helped khan sab to be free respected and revered in india. Pakistani govt has a big ego and highest degree of bigotry that they have always have degraded, abused and insulted their talented heros. Prof Abdussalam is another case in point.

Today the eco system for learning and performing Hindustani classical music is very much alive in India. The eco system for Carnatic classical music is even stronger in South India. But it looks like there is no real environment for classical music in Pakistan. I am not aware of any worthy musical heirs to pre partition classically trained musicians like Salamat Ali Khan or Ghulam Ali

My God!!! For me it is unthinkable that UBGAK - taaya ji for me - could have lived anywhere but in India. My father (who was a total devotee of classical mausiqii) and he were close friends, I grew up listening to his divine singing in person. Every word spoken in this video is correct. I can not imagine any one - even Taansen - being his equal. The greatest blessing in my life to have known, and heard him up close.
He left Pakistan because people in Pakistan do not know how to appreciate music. His preference to settle in India was Hyderabad Deccan, where he stayed with dignity and we loved him wholeheartedly.

The original philosophy behind partition was economy and not religious freedom.Muslims were economically much marginalised by the British due to various reasons.

Thanks to Hindu majority India for understanding the value of Gems. Not just Pakistani muslims, even Indian Muslims if given a chance would behave the same way. Majority of muslims whether Indian or Pakistani , have become captive of falls notion of ISLAM which made them forgot their cultural & Historical root that is " SANATAN HINDU CIVILISATION & CULTURE".
