Man, that’s some plain Jane looking headphones, guess they are nicer in the flesh than in pictures? That new sound signature sounds right up my alley. Great review Stu, the best out there. 👊🐟💯👌🏼
Yeah they're pretty attractive in person.. Sound sig is pretty addicting actually! I haven't listened to the 9500's as much lately, but I put them back on today. Thinking of having a go at the 9600 yeah? And thank you for your continued support over the last couple years man!! 🐠🐕🙌🤝
Home Studio Basics Actually thinking more about the 9500 (as an everyday open back beater) if they come down even cheaper in 11/11 sales. Currently they are USD$64 delivered down here, which is cheap, but it’s not like I actually “need” another pair of headphones! Currently use PortaPro, KSC75 and KPH30i in that role but although I LOVE that KOSS 60ohm sound signature I’m always more comfortable using an over-ear.
Were you happy with the midrange vocal performance on the 9600? I saw a scary looking graph in another review that showed a big scoop there possibly indicating recessed vocals? Goes without saying I like the forward vocals on the 6XX (and the little Koss’s) and it suits jazz too.
Do it Antoine. BUY ALL OF THE HEADPHONES!! XD Lol did you see the article? I memed that graphic :) homestudiobasics.com/philips-shp9500-vs-9600/
Nah I don't hear that. Perhaps maybe ever so slightly recessed, but it's like such a marginal difference to me if it's even there at all. Sort of like trying to imagine something that isn't there.
Vocals still stand out and sound pretty incredible. I'm listening to J. Cole & Cozz - Zendaya right now out of the Zen (take a listen!) with them and his voice is still front and center basically. I think that perceived recession might be because of the mid-bass, which I totally get. It sounds pretty incredible on most tracks, but there are certain songs where it kind of comes across bloated and like it's trying too hard.
The 9500 with the same song presents vocals a tad "shoutier" actually at the same volume, which was always one of my main minor gripes with the headphone. I still have to turn it down a bit at times. The 9600 kind of smooths everything out while still retaining most of what made the 9500 so great.

Am I the only one who like the big “R” ans “L” on the SHP9500 ?
Same here. Initially I didn't like it, but it grew on me. By comparison, the 9600 looks dull.
Nope I think it's a defining look and should have been kept as it's trademark
I actually did like it as well, but more so for utilitarian purposes rather than looks, though it did grow on me as well. I never had a "problem" with it from the start, but when I designed both in Illustrator, I found the 9500 looks a lot better graphically. It has this real old school sensibility I think.
Home Studio Basics for me it is part of it’s identity! And now seeing the 9600s not having it just feels like they didn’t assume it and wanted more to get a mainstream product without any kind of personality...
Like it as well, its like a neo-vintage.
Hey Guys!
A few things:
1) The 9600 actually weighs a bit more than the 9500 (I included this in the about section on the graphic in the video), but was surprised. It doesn't feel as bulky to me, but this may be my imagination. It likely has a lot to do with the grill size and Philips doing away with the old design. Even so, the weight disparity is only around 11 grams, so not that much.
2) The clamp has opened up since I first put them on, and is roughly the same as the 9500. Perhaps a tad tighter (which is a good thing) but not a huge difference. Being that I bought the 9500 a while ago, I can't actually remember if the clamp was as tight as the 9600's straight out of the box. If I look up or down and move my head, the 9600 does slide, so that's something to keep in mind.
3) I think I may have found my go to budget headphone for Classical. It's taken quite a while to find something, but the 9600's added "meat" seems to really help tame the volatile nature of the genre. I had read something a few years ago that claimed Classical actually needs more bass, and now I know why. The 9600 does really well with it. I don't find myself adjusting the volume as much, and I really like the way it portrays the sound. Time will tell if this sentiment stands. Check the playlist! open.spotify.com/playlist/3uTZ2clGbUHUa2N6tNFKCL?si=ZSriVTSaTc-oME0MbFHAkA
4) Out of all the Amp/DACS mentioned in the video, I like the 9600 with the FiiO K3 the best. It just sounds right to me, and matches very well. The G6 is a close runner up. Check the store link for the pairings!

I'm upset i've read and watched this now considering i got the SHP9500's hoping they would be good for classical waaaaa, I just hope they can be tweaked for classical usage *sigh* oh well :(
I would so love and appreciate if you could give me the best setting for the SHP9500's for classical, what would you recommend to do as not really wanting to stop and change for the 9600's
Well the SHP9500's are still pretty good for Classical, but you'll probably want to use a warmer Amp/DAC with them like the ifi hip-dac or FiiO Q1 MK II. Classical is super volatile as you know, and goes from quiet to loud in a hurry. The 9500's sound is not quite conducive to this, although I still use them with Classical and did today as well.
Yeah man I would probably EQ 6k down a bit, and perhaps 10k as well. What Amp/DAC do you have? Check my other reply as well.
I think the SHP9600 are a nice upgrade over the 9500's. After A/B testing them for a few hours, it became clear the soundstage and imaging are similar but there's no denying that the smoother treble and extra bass response which were the biggest complaints about the 9500's have now been fixed. I intend on keeping them both since they're both unique in their own way. By the way, I really missed the "L" and "R" on the 9500's as many others have stated here so I decided to paint them on the 9600's using a bronze metallic marker to match the external cup rings and I must say I'm quite pleased with the final result. 'Nuff said.
Very good review Stu. Personally I like the old school look of the 9500 with the L & R I think they should have kept that as it's signature look and b0//0× to the audiophile snobs
Thanks man! Yeah I actually liked it a lot too, especially now that I look at the 9600. I liked the look at first, but side by side it just doesn't have as much character. Seems more commercialized or something.
@@HomeStudioBasics if a special edition version of the 9600 was released with L&R on it and no other differences I bet it would outsell the plain Jane standard 9600
Dude I just clicked into your channel for the first time and your schtick totally caught me off guard and is cracking me up. Awesome work.
Danm, I didn't expect the 9600 to match the 9500. Loved the video.
Thanks bro! You think the 9600 would be something you'd be interested in or nah?
Just got done with a round of testing and I have to say I am super happy with the SHP9600, the comfort and build quality are both great especially at the price. Most importantly the sound (as a budding audiophile) is excellent, quality soundstage and present bass. Thanks for the review again man you've got a fan in me. Any opinions on the Fiio BTR5? I was considering looking into it for my first dedicated DAC/Amp
YAYY! Thanks for the vote of confidence my friend! I love the 9600 as well; I'm finding it does really well for Classical which is pretty incredible to me. If you're looking for your first dedicated Amp/DAC, that certainly wouldn't be a bad choice. Did you see my BTR3K review and comparison? homestudiobasics.com/fiio-btr3k-vs-btr5-vs-dragonfly-red/ Let me know what you think.
@@HomeStudioBasics Well this is exactly what I was looking for lol you've done it again man.
@@vexor7 WOOP WOOP! Thanks man! Saw your other comment :)
To me they don't really sound drastically different or better than 9500... I believe that they have added some bass and toned down the brightness/harshness on the treble and upper mids and that's about it. Valour called them more of a "sidegrade" than an "upgrade" to 9500 and I agree with him. A very good headphone for the price nonetheless!
Damn, I have Valor overproduced reviews...make it sound like everything he says is snake oil.
Yeah that's a good conclusion, and I would probably say the same for the most part. They're just different flavors of sound, with many of the same great characteristics as far as detail retrieval, imaging, Soundstage, etc. I don't feel like the 9600 is quite as open, but it's almost a wash. I do think the toned down treble is most certainly the upgrade as far as anyone else who may read this. The added meat on the bass could go either way. I enjoy it, but it doesn't always vibe with every track.
@@maximianocoelho4496 Hey man what did you mean? Could you rephrase?
@@HomeStudioBasics ooooh I was saying something mean about Joshua Valor...nothing to worry about...
@@maximianocoelho4496 Ah okay. His conclusions were fair though right? At least according to Marko. I haven't watched his vid.
Can't wait to watch this. Had the 9500 for a short while. Very, very comfortable, but just couldn't get on with the sound.
Hey man! What was your objection?
@@HomeStudioBasics I thought they were pretty sibilant. I really wanted to like them, because physically they were so comfortable, but unfortunately the treble was too harsh for me to be able to relax while wearing them.
If they were my first pair of "Hi-Fi" headphones, I am sure I would have loved them, but I already had a lot of headphones to compare them with, which to my ears were better, so I sold them.
I saw Zeos' rave review of them and when a good deal popped up, I bought them, just to see if they could live up to the hype.
@@EternalLife91 Yeah that makes sense about the first pair part. I respect your overall opinion, but disagree hah. I'm actually writing up another video script on it. XD I have never understood the backlash. It's basically a $75 headphone that I paid a whopping $54 for. I'm really not sure what people were expecting, especially given the countless other headphones with a bright treble that no one complains about. The treble can be a bit essy yes, but that whole sentiment was blown way out of proportion. The video that I'm going to make will be funny if anything. You may not agree, but it will get you thinking and laughing for sure.
Awesome review and comparison. Had the 9500 and loved it for years, going to pick up the 9600 next and enjoy.
Nice man! Let me know what you think of it! Check out the article too and consider snagging one from here! homestudiobasics.com/philips-shp9500-vs-9600/ :)
how did it go?
@@josaphcj7199 love then and I'm still using them. Very slight difference in feel and sound.
Never thought I'd see Bellamy from The 100 doing headphone reviews
😂
Haha! Yeah man an employee in Best Buy once came up to me and told me that (that I looked like him) lol. I've been compared to a lot of people over the years: Jim Carrey, Jared Leto, James Blount, John Mayer, George Harrison, Kevin Bacon, Keanu Reeves, the list goes on. It really depends on the look that I have at the time, my age, how long my hair is/the style, what I'm wearing, etc.
9600 on sale for prime day, what a time to find this video. At $100 the added differences seem worth the extra $20. Great video man keep up the good work.

I hope you will purchase through one of my links as the kick back I get really helps the site and blog out. :) Great price on the 9600! I paid like $120-130 can't remember the exact number. Fantastic my friend. I'm looking forward to it! Thank you so much for your continued support :)
Thank you for a thorough comparison!!!! I was going to get the 9500 but thanks to your review, I'm getting the 9600.
Hey man check this out first: ruclips.net/video/mNJTCJnw0BA/видео.html
how did it perform?
@@josaphcj7199 OK. I returned them and bought the Phillips X2'. They are awesome!!!
@@Bassic778 why did you return the 9600, What was wrong with them? Also how does the sound of the x2hr and 9600 compare in your opinion?
@@kaikaih5771 As a bass player, deep and defined bass response is very important to me as well as clarity in the entire audio frequency range. The X2HR's have all of those qualities while the 9600's seem to lack the deep defined bass and clarity to my ears. Also, when listening to music, the music sounded further away when using the 9600's if that makes sense. However, there are some users who really enjoy the 9600's.
Thanks for the information. There is something cool about the text on the 9500 and how it reminds me of students that would write on their desks in class.
Yeah I love that old school feel of the 9500. Since I bought the 9600 I just don't really dig it's look that much. It's too plane Jane for me. When I first got it I thought it looked slick but now not so much. It's like a dopey blonde chick with big boobs or something. Nice to look at for like 5 seconds, but I always go back to my first love (intelligent Brunette).
@@HomeStudioBasics Ha. Funny analogy. I didn’t think of it like that. Yeah, there is an old school vibe to the 9500 that I like. I thought it looked kind of silly at first, but now I’m digging the look.
I just bought the 9600 for $72 on Amazon. Thanks for the review.
Nice review, hippy! Semper Fi! That was a special message from Marine Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway (Clint Eastwood) in Heartbreak Ridge. I've had a special place in my heart for Philips ever since my older cousin let me use his new reel to reel from this company when I was a kid. The 9500 sounds interesting, but I might try the X2HR first. Also, the Deva looks very good and affordable as well. You have a fine collection, and I'd like to have a few more listening options on my shelf. Thanks for having a RUclips channel that's both informative and entertaining.
I liked the 9500 but really cause it was my beater (which is now the Koss Kph30i). I dont know if i can get on with $140 it would have to be competitive with the 58X.
I also loved how open the 9500 was. One of my favorite parts IMO
Finally got the KPH30i delivered, and.. OMG. Lol.
Fantastic review! Bought them a few months back and i LOVE my 9600. I have a sony XB900 too for my bluetooth headphones but i gotta say, the SHP9600 is lovely for neutral listening
Hey man thank you! Yeah I did enjoy the 9600 :) Still have it! I may include it in the 10k giveaway because I think someone else deserves a go. Same with the 9500 which is going to be super hard to part with lol.
How does the 9600 compare to the Sony XB900?
@@kaikaih5771 Much better clarity, and also more comfortable since it is open backed (so more ventilation). I can only wear XB900's in an air conditioned room. Bass wise tho XB900s are stronger but also more exaggerated. That being said, i enjoy using both.
I’ve just bought the SHP9600 (for 88€) and that’s because of this video. I really enjoyed your review.
Hey man! Thank you :) Let me know how you like them!
I got them for the same price too! Love them :)
The frequency response on these headphones is what attracted me to them I had bever used open back head phones before only semi open and closed back.
Love the running commentary! 😁👍🏼
Hey man thank you! I'll have to check your channel out 🙂🎧
@@HomeStudioBasics thank you. 😊👍🏼
he is back!...btw how are your grandchildren ?
Hey man! They're being a pain lately lol. My youngest reached into a full cereal box for the toy and you can imagine what happened next: The cereal exploded everywhere and I got pissed and yelled 😂
I found your blog 1st before finding your RUclips channel and I had a blast reading your long form reviews. Glad to see the personality transfers to live video. That being said, thank you for all the work. I think the 9600 is more up my alley. Currently using a OneOdio Studio Pro 30 that I bought coz of all the reviews but I *really* don't like them. Other than the comfort and wonderful cable can't find anything I like about their sound. I actually prefer my 5yr old cheapo Audio Technica SR30BT bluetooths.
Amazing review between the both, thanks dude:') (love the rap at the end lmao)
Haha thanks man!! Going to get to your other comment about Classical in a bit :)
Have to tell, awesome content man. Keep the good work!
Thank you so much man! Interested in either of these?
@@HomeStudioBasics I have the 9500 here, but I'm interested in testing the 9600.
It's more mellow and laid back. Def a bit different from 9500. Still has good detail retrieval but I think it's missing the magic of the 9500. Some would disagree. I love the 9600 for gaming and film though. It does REALLY well.
@@HomeStudioBasics I think you suggested somewhere that the Fiio K3 would be a good pair with the 9600. Do you think it is a good pairing with the 9500 as well? Have another suggestion of dac/amp for the 9500?
Good review, i loved the 9500 and the 9500s back when, i bought one last night when i heard the legend came back swinging.....and man....they are 3 in two
Yes! The CHAMP IS HERE!! Lol. 9500 will always reign supreme for me under $100, although the KPH30i is making a strong case for taking the top spot on my Budget Kings series: homestudiobasics.com/the-budget-kings-series/
The 9600 seems like a sound deal, do you think it would be better to get the 9600 or just go for the long haul and save for one of the Senn 600 variations? Sweet production in the video, don't give up!
Hey man! Thank you! They are different flavors really, even from a traditional HD600 or 6XX. I may just save for a 6XX if I were in your shoes, but it's close. I just couldn't help buying a 9600 because I wanted to A/B them. It's an interesting question though, and one that is kind of hard to answer with a certainty. There's a bout a $100 difference, but I wouldn't necessarily call a 6XX $100 "better" though it still remains my top recommendation for the majority of people. The 9600 is still a really good value, and most certainly competes with headphones it has no business competing with. I can do an A/B of the 9600 vs. my HD600 if you want!
These days I am mostly playing WoW Classic Hardcore mode. Meaning if you die, you have to delete your character. You also can't trade with other players or use the auction house. It feels like a whole new game. You have to be focused to not make any mistakes and die :)
I am also trying to get through Witcher 3. I beat Witcher 1 and 2 first. Have a good one :)
Sup bro! I had a roommate in college who played WoW a lot. He had to stop after awhile because he told me it was ruining his life. LOL. I never have played it, but Fallout 3 basically did the same thing to me back in 2008. I literally laid on the couch for a week and played it without moving. 😂 I really want to play Witcher. Heard it was pretty incredible.
Thank you so much for such great video. I got answer to almost all questions I had about my next purchase on SH9600 with your video and by far it was better than all other reviews I watched. You could have a lot more followers on RUclips if you could talk the way we (majority) identify as normal (less slang, more mature).
Thanks for the great feedback man! Will keep that in mind and run it by my associates. 😂
Did you purchase the 9600 yet?
@@HomeStudioBasics No, I want to order it today and surprisingly I noticed that it's on the lowest price on Amazon. Such a chance, right?
@home studio basics Just stumbled onto your RUclips videos and subed after the first one. Love the honesty and knowledge being dropped. My question is this. I need headphones to play guitar thru my Line 6 Hx Stomp. Was thinking the 9500 were the ones to get but your review on the 9600 has me questioning which one to get. Also should I use a DAC/Amp or small tube amp for this setup? I play mostly blues, blues rock and hard rock. Signal chain right now is guitar-Hx stomp-headphones. What say you? Thank you for the great content.
Hey man, thank you so much, and my pleasure! Well, the 9600 is a bit more bass-heavy and warmer sounding vs. the cool, sterile 9500. I still prefer the 9500 for pure sound. Check my comparison as it should really help you decide: homestudiobasics.com/philips-shp9500-vs-9600/ If you want to add some warmth, yeah, a tube amp is good and will go really well with the colder nature of the 9500. It just all depends on what kind of sound you're after. Neutral/Clinical: I like 9500 with a solid-state amp. Warmer/gooier: The 9500 with a warmer solid-state/tube amp *or* just get a 9600 with a solid-state.
As far as connecting the stomp to a separate DAC, I'm looking at it now online and I wouldn't bother. It's got all of that already internally so imo would just be a waste of money getting a separate one. Now, if you just want an Amp/DAC to use separately from the stomp, then yeah, I'd get something for general music listening. Otherwise, just get either of the headphones and call it a day. Keep me posted on your decision between 9500 and 9600. If you do want to get an Amp/DAC, let me know and I can make a recommendation :)
@@HomeStudioBasics thank you for the reply back homie. Not trying to keep laying on the praise but it is super difficult to find honest reviews and reviewers and you are a breath of fresh knowledgeable air. I’ve been digging thru your website learning a ton. Keep it coming and keep it on point. Much appreciated.
What I’m trying to do is get as close to recreating a tube amp sound using headphones and my Hx Stomp. Maybe I’m chasing a unicorn but I’ll settle for pony in a unicorn costume. I’ve read on some of the guitar forums I follow that guys have used akg k240 studios with a strymon iridium and a DarkVoice 336SE Headphone Tube Amplifier and loved how it sounded and felt when playing. Most all said to use open back headphones for the sense of space and clarity. That led me on my search to here. Most guitar players aren’t audiophiles but are always searching for the tone in their head. I figured go to a professional audiophile and see what they would suggest. Saw you played guitar as well and figured you would have some good ideas about it.
I also use the new Spark amp from Positive Grid which is an amazing piece of practice kit but won’t drive my beyerdynamic dt 770 pro (80ohm Or 32ohm... not sure) so I have to use my 5 year old Bose QC 25s to play it. I was reading that amp and amp modeler makers don’t put much effort into the headphone out portion since most people won’t be using it that way. Having a 1 year old i can only play in headphones 98%of the time. Mainly looking for something to play guitar and sound good as well as mix with them. I mainly use the beyerdynamic dt 770 pros for when I do vocals. I mainly play blues, blues rock, hard rock, little metal and dabbling in neo soul. Would definitely use to listen to music as well since I’m always doing that when not playing. Sorry for the novella and any help would be appreciated.

@@HomeStudioBasics YES I IZ .................... muahahaahhahahaha
Small FYI: the product links for the 95 and 96 are mixed up in the description section my guy 😮
You gonna be reviewing that XHR3 or X3? I like the Fidelios but the pads are my nemesis. To the degree I picked up the 599s because I couldn't take feeling like a benzo addict with the itchies any more. But I do prefer the sound of the Fidelios regardless of what the audio file community says. I like the builds of these Philips.. not loving the new prices but time changes all things.
Woops! Lol. I actually believe you can buy either headphone from the same link, but I will fix it for sure. Actually no you're right: they switched it and made 9600 a separate page agh! They could both be bought from the same link a few days ago. Thanks for the head up!
I paid around $120 IIRC for 9600. I think that's pretty fair for what they updated. More easily replaceable pads should be the next fix (probably should have been part of 9600 but oh well).
X3 I really want to but it's like 349 lol. Def in the future at some point though. Yeah the 9500 pads used to bother me but they don't anymore. The 9600's pads actually didn't at all when I first put them on and still don't. Strange.
Thanks for the review Home Studio Basic! I was wondering when you say that 9600 sound a little bit more bassy, does it mean that the 9500 lack the bass sound at all? I’m looking to upgrade the extra bass 550ap Sony so what’s your advise? :)
Hey man! The 9500's bass does roll off quite a bit, but still sounds really articulate and clean - perhaps more realistic sounding than the 9600. 9600 definitely has more mid-bass emphasis, but I personally don't feel it gets int eh way of the other frequencies if that makes sense. Haven't heard that headphone but I'm confident you will love the sound of the 9600 if a good bass is what you desire. :) Check out my article and let me know what you think! @@HomeStudioBasics The 9600 on sale for $72, so IDK if I should go with the 9600 instead. Is the extra bass and less shrill treble on the 9600 really noticeable, and is the clamping force a lot more on the 9600?
ive had these shp9500 since 2015 probably the best dynamic balanced pair of headphones for the price you can get hands down
Absolutely right man! Still use them a lot. I actually bought them in 2017 for $54 on New Egg. For whatever reason I always say 2018 and I don't know why lol.
I'm just starting out for these audiophile headphones meant for studio/professional use but I want something that is more of an all-rounder for music and even gaming. I have found some options like the Samson SR850 and Superlux HD681 but I came across this headphones from some overhyped reviewers from forums across the internet. I am in a budget right now across the 70 dollars margin. Would you recommend these headphones for starters? 9600 run for 79 dollars in my country while 9500 runs for 68 dollars.
I also heard about Takstar Pro 82 which seems to be the competion of SHP9500. Which of these headphones should I choose?

@@HomeStudioBasics That's good news. Thank you
He got me. Based on the title, I thought he was going to give a negative review.
How do the X2HR compare to the 9600 regardless of price?
okay so I got the 9500, then returned them because the 9600 was cheaper and sounds better. I have to say, when they're on a deal for $55, if you get these and a vmoda boom mic, they're a pretty unbeatable gaming headset, but they are really well balanced-sounding for the price. have that classic open back warm sound but to me they're one of the few headphones that I can legitimately wear for hours, leather pads will immediately turn swampy within an hour. removable cable is a huge up for this compared to similar headphones in the range usually not having them.
I don't take these in public, but that's okay, there's plenty of IEMs that sound excellent for cheap, so I can keep the soundpeats free2classic and the truthear hola for on the go use.
If you have a suggestion for wired IEMs I'd love to hear it. I'm currently burning through my current collection of earbuds before I buy new ones though.
buds include
jbl endurance run x2
kz zst (for sleep)
truthear hola
samsung level anc
samsung wired anc buds
kbear stellar x5 (although I might just retire these to the "giveaway" collection since I don't really like the fit of flatheads)
Hi Mate, serious question, would you spend on any of these having the akg k701? Nice review mate, love ya. I changed my name, It was too long
Your name is what made you unique man! If you have the K701, I probably wouldn't, no. I bought a K702 after the 9500, but still keep the 9500 around. I did buy a 9600, but it was mostly to compare to the 9500. :)
@@HomeStudioBasics oh thanks mate, I'll change my name back then bro
Okkkkaaayyyyy. This is comedy but... Really informative. 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks man! Which one of these would you rather have?
9500 is around $120 USD and the 9600s are about $170 USD (Prices are pretty crappy since open back headphones are not sold officially in my country). Which one do u think is more worth a while for my first open back headphones? Been watching through countless videos on them and your video has been very helpful! Keep up the good work!!!
Hey man, thank you! Nice timing as I'm actually revisiting the 9600 and doing a final single review before I decide what I want to do with it. Right off the bat, 170 is way too much but for me, it's a guilty pleasure type of headphone. I really love the mid-bass emphasis on certain tracks but it's not something I really crave anymore (former bass head). If you really REALLY love bass, then yeah, go for it.
The mids on the 9600 are a bit pushed back but even so, I still find them satisfactory and they sound fine. Bass is also more rolled off but I kind of like it better when it's all said and done.
On the 9600, the mids just aren't at the forefront whereas the bass is. If you prefer a purely neutral sound with a crisper character and more present, lively mids, the 9500 is your homie. The 9600's treble mostly doesn't get out of line, with some ever so slight hiss from time to time. Nothing serious.
TL;DR imo the 9500 is a *more* worthwhile first purchase than a 9600. :) Let me know if that helps!!
@@HomeStudioBasics Thanks for responding and helping me solidify my decision! It has been keeping me up at night :) Kinda searched for the HD58X too but it was like 400 here :/. Will be waiting for the review! Earned a sub!
Nice review dude, so its more like a sidegrade i believe.
Hey man! Thank you! Yeah they're just different flavors really. I've been listening to the 9600 non-stop. Really enjoy it. You get a lot of those same out of your head moments. It just has more bass and the treble is more laid back. In some ways I would actually consider it an upgrade, but it kind of depends on the type of sound a person is after. It's not quite as crisp and open as the 9500, but the trade-off is that it is essier and brighter. I watched the movie "I'm Thinking Of Ending Things" with the 9600 and G6 on Netflix and was on the edge of my seat the entire time. You can still hear every little minute detail and it was extremely harrowing and unsettling lol.
Rn the 9600 is only 89$, do u think they're better than the 9500 aside the price? I will mainly use them for gaming and music.
Hey man! I wouldn't call them necessarily better, just a bit of a different sound. More mid-bass emphasis, slightly rolled off mids and a darker sounding treble. I personally prefer the 9500, but the 9600 isn't a bad headphone by any means. I just prefer the crisp, clear, neutral character of the 9500 more. @@HomeStudioBasics thanks for answering sir
@@HomeStudioBasics Hey bro, how does the SHP9600 compare with X2HR??
Is there a drastic difference between the two in terms of bass and overall sound quality??
I had both the 9600 was the winner for me for casual listening. However, the 9500 is better if you have a collection of headphones as it really sounds good with vocals and the 9500 has better stage. They are overall a little brighter and crisper. The 9600 is much warmer and overall more bass enclosed.
Well that came from no where...they look beautiful...I give philips that, but still not modular. I have always wondered how the drives communicate since I never saw I cable running to the other side in both 9500 and 9600. Quantic transmition?
Gosh that's a great point I forgot to touch on. Would have liked to see more easily replaceable pads. I'm going to be a doing a pad mod for the 9500's at some point when I have time, but yeah: They should have fixed that with the 9600. I mean, you can still unsnap them fairly easily, but replacing the pad is a bit of an excursion.
@@HomeStudioBasics well, that means that we need to make our custom pads...why the hell couldnt be more like Senn-Senn?
Yeah. There's a way you can mod the 9500 without f'in everything up lol. It's a tad complicated though. It involves using a custom ring and a set of Shure pads which look really good.
9500 was and is a magic for me, 9600 just lost that, thats it. You may like it or not, but if you about to choose between these two.. i recommend you to pick 9500, its better by any means. 9600 not bad at all, but i heard the direct comparsion between two on records and i must say that 9600 definitely have more damper, the overall sound is muddy, and its lost the airy/crisp effect of 9500 that makes everybody love them.
Yeah man, I'd be lying if I said there wasn't some weird bloatiness going on with the 9600. It's like it's trying too hard sometimes (which I mentioned in the video). I noticed it when I switched back to the 9500 and the sub-bass just sang. It was indescribable. It didn't have the slam on paper, but still somehow... slammed. Lol. There's this perfect rumble that the 9500 has that is hard to describe. It's just.. natural and effortless and sounds extremely accurate. I feel like they kind of sold out a little with the 9600 and added too much mid-bass the more I listen. I still think the 9600 for the most part retains that crispiness and Staging though. I'm still getting the "out of my head" moments, I'm still enjoying the sound immensely.. but yeah.. it's sort of missing that charm.
@@HomeStudioBasics Exactly, 9500 have less quantity on sub-bass region, but it is still there and the quality are very high, 9500 has its own unquie punch, that sensual slam, dunno how to describe too, but somehow they delivers that hit-feeling perfectly. Phenominal how bassless heaadphones can actually change your mind about bass quality, atleast for me it is. The bass rolls off without doubt, but the construction, openess, driver angle and distance to ear - i guess these engenering made them cut off the "trash" and deliver the virgin bass sound. I also noticed that its not a problem to add some bass with EQ, they handle it pretty good. But what else i can compare with? i own HD518, well known as the most basshead headphones in the 5xx line, and i must say that 518s dont even know about what that slam means, they produce just a lot of booo-o-o-m with a lot of echos and reverberations, turning everything into mush.

LOL. I don't know. It gives it a nice retro feel that I enjoy. After owning both for a while, I just like the aesthetic better on the 9500. When I first got the 9600 in the mail, I was enamored with its look. Now I'm just like meh. 😂 The 9500 has personality, character, uniqueness. The 9600 looks like it's trying a bit too hard to be professional-looking. I like how I can quickly and easily know which is which. I think too m any companies make the R and L way too small so you have to go hunting for it a lot of the time.
Oh and stay tuned because I may do a spray paint grill mod on the 9500 just for the fun of it.
@@HomeStudioBasics The large size of the L&R is not the issue. Its about the way they're placed. They could have atleast centered it correctly, the L&R dont even fit within the damn circles. The people who designed it had no sense of proper symmetry. I guess you spray painting it will make it look a lot better than the wayvit is.
