For me, it was the opening scene. This theme, along with visuals of English countryside, the telegraph pole and John Bates (the most sincere character ever) watching it from the train window. 😍😍😍😍
The movie is in the works so maybe we'll get lucky and they'll bring it back! I just started watching first season again on Amazon. I can't get enough 👍
Matthew Machanda Id like a series about the very first Earl of Grantham. Downton basically showed the final age of the aristocracy. I’d like to see this family’s beginning
To me, it always sounds like coming home. When I first started watching Downton, I was in a very good place in my life. Happy days. I get a little choked up when I hear it but in a good way.
My mother watched the show from 2010 until the time of her passing in September 2015. She was never able to finish the final season. My wife, daughter and I decided to watch it from the beginning soon thereafter and went through all five seasons culminating in the final season. When the movie came out in 2019, a large group of us went and saw it. This show and the fantastic music will always remind of me of my wife, and of course, my mother.. Wish I could have watched it with her. I remember her frequently talking about it. And that someone dying was very shocking.. ah, Matthew..
This song makes me feel like I'm flying over grassy summer hills... But there's an air of danger and urgency there, too. Hmm... hard to put into words. Maybe this will help: Pretty sure I cried the first time I listened to this. haha It's just so overwhelmingly beautiful at times.
Caoimhín Well that's not surprising given that imagery was the purpose of the music. The strings pulsing underneath the whole piece are supposed to be the locomotive from ep1 flying through the grassy countryside--the melody is meant to be the ominous danger of the telegram with the Titanic news being sent across the telegraph wires. And the resolution when the pulsing strings stop is meant to be the camera fixing on the panoramic view of Highclere castle, where the music mellows out and loses its pulse.
'I remember seeing the hills roll by as the train pressed on through the English countryside. The urgency of the coal powered engine matched my own as my fingers drummed the letter resting on my lap. "Come home Rupert. Your father has taken ill and has requested you." It had been may years since I had last been home but now I headed back. Back into the home I had left in disgrace all those years ago.' Is this the kind of mood it gives you?
The fast tempo of the violins make the urgency, and also the feeling of time slipping by. The eighth note of the main theme ends on an A, making the sadness, anxiety and danger, a suggestion of the time period (war). The c major scale it is set in also gives a sense of nostalgia and belonging. I don't know much about music but this is what I could take from it. I love this song but it also scares me in some way and I'm not sure why.
A very good description, and i'd like to add that the fact that the time is 12/8 instead of the regular 4/4 creates the feeling that the beats last slightly more giving part of the anxiety filing. (I notice it more in the first notes that instead being 4 quarter notes are 4 doted quarter notes.)
@@HiddenTalent_07 its the austere elegant chords of the strings, mixed with the familiar bowing of the Cellos and Contrabass giving that urgent background back-and-forth, mixed with the piano, harp, and other accompanying melodies. 1:53 does it for me, my favorite melodies always have this note system to it, you can even hear the background chords change to fit the sadder note there. Its a little more curious than just the main melody before it.
Ahhhh... My favourite tune! I had the privilege of doing a private tour at Highclere Castle this September. What an amazing experience it was. I highly recommend it!
Lucky you Kamini....would u be able to share photos? My id is openspaces.bangalore@gmail.com I co miss this saga...nothing like it has ever hit tv after...and here in India. Star World didn't put up the last season....idiots
I watched the entire series and movie with my mom over the span of less than a year. She didn't understand why I would want to watch it, but not only was I able to spend time with my mom and build inside jokes and memories with her, but also able to experience such a lovely story. Everytime I hear this I smile and get a little teary eyed
I did the same thing with mom and dad. I knew she liked the show so I bought her the full series on disk for Mother’s Day. We ended up watching the whole thing over the next year and a half.
I actually felt saddened when this series ended. I thought, I won't get to live in this magnificent manor anymore, and I'll no longer be part of this family.
Anyone else love the dissonant tone between the chords? They paint a picture of a place that's trying to be elegant but is covering up very dark secrets.
I think it’s like the contrast between how the family is struggling to maintain tradition in a time of extreme change. They’re trying to keep themselves as a model aristocratic family but life changes as monarchies get overthrown , the ruling class becomes less influential, and industrial society settles in.
Always reminds me of the show's intro, the bell ringing, the out-of-focus maid going up the stairs, the trials and tribulations of the people, and blanketing it all, a nostalgia for a time period I never lived through.
I'm 12, and in love with the series and soundtracks. I don't think any word in the English dictionary could possibly describe the beauty of how the song sounds! Nevermind describe the feeling it causes! This song makes me feel like I was there, at the time... the early 1900s, witnessing all the events that happened THROUGH MY EYES instead of a television screen!
I binged this series in a couple of weeks when I was off, but never skipped this music at the beginning as it was so lovely to hear every time. This isn’t as good as the original score
I’ve never seen Downtown Abbey but I can recognize and deeply appreciate this masterpiece of music. It’s so incredibly beautiful with hints of sadness, drama, and mystery. It almost feels like a continuous march or circling of something whether or not someone wants it to. Amazing. ❤️
Each episode was VERY expensive to produce, so they had to cut it down. Nonetheless, I find it better that it's short and doesn't drag out like The Simpsons where it eventually looses its potency and becomes a weak series that barely gets my attention.
I'm not able to put in words on what I'm feeling while hearing this..the emotions are so many.. they're just mixed...but the most prominent one is feeling like I belong to them..to be a part of that family...be a part of their legacy...their pride,...and I don't know it is just a beautiful piece of art.. perfectly put together
I wasn't even a big fan of this series, I just find this theme song incredibly beautiful and I cannot quite put into words the feeling it evokes. Kind of a mix of nostalgia, sadness, hope, adventure, and a sense of longing all at the same time.
I remember when the show first came out. I was little and my parents would watch it together with me sometimes. The intro was always beautiful back then, and it still is now. So nostalgic
I finally, after all these years, binge-watched the entire series, and the theme music is like a character in its own right, evoking a place and time now lost. Especially the chord that drops lower at 0:29.

I've always know it. I've always heard it. I even went to a theater where spiritual dances performed to this song. But I've never watched downtown Abbey. When my father was watching it I heard it and SPRINTED to the TV. I asked him what the music was and he said downtown abbey..... I have now found this heavenly piece of music
I haven't watched Downton Abbey in a very long time, but it has a nostalgia that cannot be replaced. I used to watch it with my mom lol and just the music is like being that age again.
The strong, straight piano notes make me think of the Crawley's - definite and strong people. The busy string rhythm underneath makes me think of the staff mostly hidden while supporting the upstairs lifestyle. The crescendo of strings with a fuller chord before a quieter chord makes me think of the drama that occurs in their family that's followed by more harmonious times. It also makes me think of the work to get to the Abbey - often by train, then car or walking - and the relief of arriving at such a beautiful place. After a few times through the theme of the music, you hear triplets on the piano with lower notes that me me think of sinister threats the characters endure. A complete break in the theme for some rhythmic, midrange strings makes me think of adventure, especially on horseback. Other themes during the episodes are excellent. I think of the music during emotional moments between the Bateses, the string plucks when mischief is afoot, and the 1920's sound of when cast members arrive somewhere glamorous. Music played when characters are in the village makes me feel that their lives had many beautiful moments, even though the times were uncertain and hard for the staff especially. Join the music with the cinematography, the writing, the costumes, sets, and acting, and you have mini-movies that transport one to a different era and into the lives of a family and staff who share the emotions we have today. And that's why I'm on my third time through the whole series. It's escapism during a pandemic - like one they experienced.
SO good... after watching the series (a few times!) all I have to do is listen to this and it brings it all back. Even without watching the show, thought, this music is so lovely and emotional.
What a fabulous series this was. There is so much potential for future shows with stories of how the family survives through WWII. I would love it! Also R.I.P. Maggie Smith.
My 17 year old daughter and I play this when we are down. It lifts our spirits and she dances to it.😀👏 We love Downton Abbey! Wish it would come back as a new series!
The driving strings of this song sound like the wheels of a train in full motion, and the melody evokes the feeling of time slipping away from you, no matter how tightly you try to hold onto the current moment.
All the months I've been currently watching the series. I began to wonder...what would it be like if Downton Abbey took place in the 21st Century? Lord Grantham threw a hissy fit about toasters, electricity and radios being in the house. Imagine his reaction when computers and cellphones are introduced. I'll bet Mrs.Patmore would have a conniption. If someone brought a microwave down into the kitchen
Gwen will contribute a laptop for a kitchen "show and tell" session. Mr. Carson will be seen experimenting with a smartphone. Branson will be managing a fleet of self driving limousines from his control room in the tower of Downton Abbey. While Daisy is still getting the blame for everything going wrong. Especially when Prince William and Kate get mixed up in gender on reassembly visiting the "Aristocratic Shed" by teleporter...
Mr Carson (talking to the staff about the new microwave that has just been delivered to Mrs Patmore), "I am led to understand, that it cooks by the use of a form of invisible light. However, while that may be well and good for some, WE shall not be cooking the lord and lady Granthams meals with it, until I can inspect this light myself. And for that to occur, I must be able to see it. Is that understood?"
Whenever i listen to this theme i just remember myself watching the first season of downton abbey 🖤 i love this series lots , even though i just watched the first 2 seasons but this serial is quite beautiful and perfect i just feel the winds hitting my face whenever i listen to it 🖤.
Riding a train everyday through the Hamptons while listening to this I imagine the Countess and Barrow sitting in front of me having an unexpected conversation of the current 21st century events.
I feel like saying "I must go" and ride a horse with urgency with a cape on my back 😂
Ha HAAA! Yes! ☝🏻👏🏻

Listening to this soundtrack makes me strongly desire another Downton Abbey series.
Do you think it would be interesting if they did a Prequel to it? Maybe 5 years from now they did one of their ancestors maybe 3 generations back?

Branson will be managing a fleet of self driving limousines from his control room in the tower of Downton Abbey. While Daisy is still getting the blame for everything going wrong. Especially when Prince William and Kate get mixed up in gender on reassembly visiting the "Aristocratic Shed" by teleporter...
😂
Mr Carson (talking to the staff about the new microwave that has just been delivered to Mrs Patmore), "I am led to understand, that it cooks by the use of a form of invisible light. However, while that may be well and good for some, WE shall not be cooking the lord and lady Granthams meals with it, until I can inspect this light myself. And for that to occur, I must be able to see it. Is that understood?"
sadlobster1 wait till they show the episode where they introduce them to Facebook and Instagram.

Great music to a great television series. Nothing here in America that matches up to this high quality tv show.
