Who should decide when, where and how often Latter-day Saints wear temple garments?

  • Latter-day Saint leaders seem to be concerned about what they believe is the causal, even “cavalier” wearing of religious underclothing by devout members.
Indeed, in a recent speech, a general authority Seventy reportedly condemned women who wear temple garments only on Sunday and to the temple and the rest of the week can be seen in “yoga pants.” He warned that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was planning to issue stricter rules about the wearing of garments.
The standard instruction has essentially been for women and men to wear them “day and night.” According to a recent survey, though, some women are donning them when and where they want - and they don’t, it seems, view that as disobedience or inappropriate. At the same, it is getting tougher to find clothing, especially for women, that completely covers garments.
On this week’s episode, author Kristine Haglund, former editor of Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought, and Laura Brignone, a Latter-day Saint research analyst at Sacramento State University, discuss the challenges in wearing garments, what some members are choosing, and what it means for their faith.

Thanks Christine and Laura for sharing your expert perspectives on this personal religious topic. Your statistics of number of Macy’s dresses that are garment acceptable at 8% versus Macys mens formal wear being 95% garment compatible, illustrates how much more effort women have to go to make this part of their religion work. I wish the near impossibility of the task of finding compatible clothing would inspire kindness and flexibility for others and less judgement.
A blogger once said “If the LDS church is to be in the undergarment business it needs to BE IN that business”, meaning they should be investing in adopting more innovative fabrics and styles to improve functionality and user experience. For example, For ages there has only been four fabric options all of which really only work in cool, dry climates. It would be a major surprise and improvement if they ever introduce a fabric that breathes well and doesn’t irritate skin, so it works in humid warm climates, that is a soft material (not a scratchy nylon mesh). But in comparison, basic modern panties from Walmart have better functionality for women’s skin health as well as Always menstrual pad compatibility, than garments. it’s sad the LDS do not have a better, more functional design or alternatively more cultural leniency (less shaming) for wearing what works best for the individual.

Do you think men should wear a shirt while swimming? I mean, if women need to cover the tummy because it isn't proper, then men should too so that us women don't look at the abs or follow the "trail of danger" and let our minds wander to bad thoughts. I mean if women are responsible for the way men think, then men should cover their abs to help us keep our minds thinking celestially.

I agree with you. Men should cover their abs but not for the reasons you do. I don't know where you go swimming but where I go men should be required to wear a t-shirt so the rest of us can keep our lunch down.

For other Christians, would you ask the same question about the priests’ clothing who officiated at King Solomon’s temple?
The ancient Israelites were put to d3ath for not observing the Sabbath, etc.
Or would you ask the same question about a Catholic Bishop, a Jewish Rabbi, or a Muslim Imam, etc.?
In all different religions, God sets standards for His followers and leaders.
Even if you do not think The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is led by Jehovah, you can understand from a biblical and scriptural perspective that requirements for God’s people in every time were given, and are recorded in scripture.
He loves Holy things. Can we deny God of His love for us keeping His commandments?
As He has said: If Ye Love me, Keep My Commandments.

While it is true that other religions do have clothing with spiritual meaning, this isn’t an equivalent comparison to LDS garments as most other religious clothing is used ceremonially or in a specific ritual. The LDS equivalent would be to only expect garments worn (under clothing) at temple or church for example.
I think the women in the podcast are not saying they have grievances about having religious symbols in their daily life. Rather they take issue with the practicalities of having it represented in an undergarment for which there is limit style and fabric choices, as well as garments are not as functional as commercial alternatives for managing women’s health needs (menopause, post-natal, menstruation,). Also, there is a cultural stigma against self-regulating garment wearing inline with personal needs or preferences.
As this possess a much higher burden on women, and women have less influence at the general church levels where decisions about garment design and how much to spend on R&D for new fabrics and manufacturing are made, it makes many women feel there is no pathway for designs to be improved for better user experience.

      Thanks for your response!
I would like to clarify what I said about other religions.
They have been commanded as they believe to wear that clothing at those times.
The frequency doesn’t matter when it comes to a commandment from God.
That’s what I was referring to-that when they are commanded to wear that clothing, that’s what they do if they want to follow the commandments of God, as they believe.
In the temple, we are promised blessings from wearing the garment.
I would think people would shout for joy to receive them.
Who wouldn’t want protection from Satan and better health and Spiritual discernment?
Is it more important to say: I want those blessings, but only when it’s convenient for me, or ‘these blessings are real. I want those blessings. God wants me to have those blessings. Frankly to be my best self I need those blessings.
Similarly, and I get that I’m a guy, but I don’t feel as comfortable wearing the garment than if I didn’t.
In the summer I get sweaty and at night I get sweaty and my garments feel a bit unpleasant.
But I wear them because I love God. I wear them because God wants me to. I wear them to show Him I will keep the covenants I made with Him. I wear them because He blesses me when I wear them.
I will put them on and my thoughts quiet down.
I will put them on and I feel better emotionally.
I put them on and I know I am pleasing God.
Going to the temple frequently has helped me understand the importance of Garments and has helped me feel of their significant power more.
The more I go to the temple the more I see God’s power present there and in the world.
I think this is because I do my best to live the covenants I made in the temple.
We may feel that a commandment is inconvenient, and it very well be-like Tithing, but looking at the big picture, in 10,000 years, I truly believe that we will look back and see and be experiencing the benefits of living the commandments, keeping them, and being a covenant keeping member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which includes wearing the temple garment.

Sorry, but your analysis of the percentages of clothing based on men and women has a serious flaw. I suggest that's why you used percentages. That allows you to ignore the sheer quantity of options available at the typical department store for women vs men. For every iten of mens cloting for sale, there can be 10-20 or even more options for women.
For example - 8000 dresses where there 640 garment compatible dresses. But you only use a percentage of men's clothing without a count at 89% - but the reality is it is lucky if there are more than a couple of hundred articles of mens wear even available - well under the 640 for women. And of course, with dress clothing, it's even far more limited. They may carry 3 suits with some different color variations, and just a few dress shirts - only in color variations.
And if we're talking about sizes (which doesn't really apply here, but it is the same kind of differential), they carry a wide (no pun intended) range of sizes for the majority of bodies, while as a man of 6'2, I can't even shop at Macy's, aside from TShirts.
Suggesting that makes it harder for women to buy clothing because of the dearth of options is not really honest. The real difficulty is that you don't get to select from the full range of options. The difference is not comparable, but the opposite of what was expressed.
It really sounds like trying to create a case to fit the desired solution rather than looking for a solution for an identified problem.
Turning into a female oppression is quite a stretch. The current garments for women have been modified to be smaller than mwn's already. I suspect that whatever "option" that happens will be declared oppressive by some.
Turning the issue to some form of control and gender violence destroys any credibility of your concerns.

@@lifeaccordingtotheo9643 Hahahahahaha. Could you be any more neurotic? There is a standard, and no one cares if you live up to it or not. It's between you and God. No one "shames" you - you feel shame because you feel that you aren't doing wht you think you should - otherwise you wouldn't care.
So, no, there's no controlling - for a basic adult. Of course, if you insist on living as a toddler, then you may feel controlled. Of course, note it's still about how you feel.
Another basic adult behavior - being accountable for yourself and not blaming others for your decisions and choices.

Latter-day Saint women need to study their scriptures and adhere to the teachings of the prophets. They made covenant's in the temple and are expected to obey the leaders of the church and their husbands. It is their duty to comply with church regulations. They have no say in the matter. Actually, they should express gratitude to the church that they aren't required to wear a burka every time they are allowed to leave their house. Im getting just a little irritated that this subject is even brought up! Women need to understand that their role in the church is to always look pretty, be a good cook and dishwasher, rejoice in performing your household duties like laundry and even yard work, take excellent care of the children and be prepared to share their husband with other worthy women in the eternities. Our Heavenly Father loves his women and the sisters in the church must show their love to him by obedience to the laws of the gospel.

This is not God's church. It is man's church. Christ came to fulfill the law. LDS church came to establish laws. Religion puts people in bondage. Christ came to set us free to live by the Holy Spirit. This discussion is both silly and sad. Read the Bible. The Pharisees became worshipers of the law, just like Mormonism. Was active member for 60 years and now as a Christian I trust that Jesus is Enough.
