I thought I had a plumbing issue!!!😂 sounds ridiculous...well as I waded around for hours till daylight I never once thought about alligators or snakes..I suppose I was in shock. All I thought about was getting out,and wondering if anyone would come for me...and of course my pets. When daylight broke I then knew how serious it was ..my neighbors car was blocking my front door. I believe one goes into shock which is a blessing.
I have been in Tennessee for 16 years on high ground...but just look at n.c.now..we can never take anything for granted. Prayers and blessings for all victims..especially the elderly. Thank God for fema..they were absolutely there for all of us.❤😊

Well I hate to burst anyones bubble but this issue is only going to get worse and worse and by 2100 large amounts of land will be gone from Florida, which will only be sped up each time a hurricane comes through and takes more and more and more land and the hurricanes will be increasing in frequency and scale, which further takes away land and the cycle continues until Florida is quite literally uninhabitable. You can't live in a state where a hurricane barrels through the state every year and does this. Just like you can't live in Arizona if it's 130 degrees.

I am glad FEMA is helping these people but... I am really conflicted on people rebuilding in Florida. FEMA money is just wasted if its given to rebuild their houses over and over every year... at some point you need to force them to rebuild in another state, or only allow them to rebuild with concrete buildings etc.
There is a reason home insurance is basically not available / scam / over-priced in Florida, because its not practical at least not the way the homes are built.

Honestly, I am surprised the death toll isn't MUCH higher. So many people refused to evacuate and didn't take the storm seriously. People getting tornado warnings going outside to look around when they hear the tornado coming. Having parties, going surfing, running generators indoors, not turning off their electricity as flood waters entered their homes. It truly is shocking that the number isn't higher. Glad for it, though. Hopefully the survivors who learned the hard way will take warnings more seriously next time.

I grieve with those who have lost so much, lives of loved ones, houses they thought were a fortress strong enough to withstand Milton and all the other tragedies we're seeing coming out of the mid-state area of Florida. I say that sincerely. Here's the question that comes to my mind: how did anyone expect to remain safe when living on reclaimed land from a swamp? Florida is mostly on reclaimed land that used to be the Everglades. The panhandle aside, that long peninsula is a giant swamp- nothing but flat lowlands. My dearest late mother-in-law had very sane advice for choosing a place to live and her #1 criterion was "don't live in a flood plain.", the rest of the list is short but easy, DON'T live, #2 near a volcano that has erupted in the past 2500 years, #3 on a fault line, #4 in the path of the northeast gale (we both have lived in New England coast all our lives. Remember George Clooney and The Perfect Storm?) #5 near a landfill, particularly a dumping ground for toxic waste-(most of you don't remember The Love Canal where 9 children on the same street died of cancer after living there for only a few years). There are other sane, safe rules for habitation like being hooked up to the town sewer and having a mailbox the carriers can get to easily, making the front of the house disguise the beauty inside and to the rear (this discourages burglary), having house insurance to cover as much as you can afford every month, grow your own herbs, plant wildflowers for the bees and butterflies and hang a feeder for migrating hummingbirds. The lesser list is long but just as obvious. I'm lucky to have found housing that fits all these criteria. Our backyard had an area of the typical suburban lawn but the other portion, much larger, was tilled every year to discourage small trees from sprouting and seeded with wildflowers. It was amazing to see who showed up to drink nectar, dine on seeds and fish for small aquatic denizens as we lived on an inlet of a saltwater harbour. The thing that slaps me upside the head, and though I recognize that many wouldn't have this choice, are the interviews with owners of flooded and destroyed property in which the same phrase echoed when asked if they were going to rebuild in exactly the same place that flooded about every five years, "We love the view." I find it very hard to sympathize with stupidity.

But there are many places that are not prone to such massive devastation on a yearly basis. An earthquake can theoretically happen anywhere but it is much more likely on a fault line. Hurricanes can devastate places we normally wouldn't consider but coastal communities, especially on the gulf are definitely going to get hit over and over. It all depends on whether you want to risk it every year or if you want to mitigate those chances by living somewhere that it is much less likely to happen. I've lived almost my whole life on the Alabama coast but I won't live on the beach, and if and when it becomes more threatening where I live I will not remain here.

These storm are going to get more frequent and more powerful. The power comes from the warming ocean water. Florida is not a good place to buy real estate.

You people are acting as if we've never had hurricanes before and that somehow humans are responsible for them.. We had major hurricanes far more frequently in the early 2000s, and the strongest hurricane ever recorded was in the 70s. This is completely normal. Hurricanes also regulate the earths temperature. Less hurricanes could be a bad thing.

@carelgoodheir692 The amount of Co2 released into the atmosphere by human intervention is negligible to the formation of hurricanes. It doesn't move the needle in the slightest when it comes to these storms.
