And they evacuated where the storm _surge_ was expected to hit (badly, in the beginning they feared it could be 10 to even 15 ft). This couple was flooded because of the heavy rainfall RAIN. So essentially these residents thought the worst was over, they had been lucky - and then the flood came. The surge retreated back into the ocean - but not the rainwater.

      I was born in NL. The Dutch solution includes levels of state intervention and funding that would horrify the average US Democrat. It's worth it, it keeps a generally rather happy and healthy, economically successful small country from having half of its most thickly populated areas under water at every Spring Tide. But the forces at work on some parts of the US Gulf coast would be beyond what even Dutch engineers could deal with.

    • @MusicheadRick
      @MusicheadRick 4 часа назад +2

      @@carelgoodheir692 there are already dunes along the Florida coast. They could start to make those bigger.
      And instead of building real estate (out of pure greed) inside low laying area's, like in Sarasota and Bradenton for instance; they could turn those low area's into natural flood zones.
      Instead of doing nothing, they could do something. Yes, the storms and conditions are worse. No, 100% protection would not be possible, even with Dutch innovation. But 60% less damage for instance, would still be a lot less worse then what we see now.
