I think Vivien lives, specifically because of the Arkbow. I think the Simic and Vannifar take interest in Vivien and the bow. Vivien becomes blue/green, and the first, true, Simic Ascendant, combining the souls and spirits of her home plane animals with Vannifars mastery of physical form. Vivien gets her victory over Bolas, she gets to live out her life as a planeswalker representative of her home plane both physically, spiritually, and thematically. (vivien's home plane after all is a bunch of artificers and a bunch of elves, blue, and green). This would also help explain why viviens original text is so generic. They could do some absolutely wild stuff with a 'Vivien, Simic Ascendant'. planeswalker.
I think Bolas would say something like, "a weapon to strike down a dragon, can not strike down a god!" when Vivien takes her shot and misses, I feel he'd mock her for it, and play on the whole "god pharaoh" thing he had on Amonketh.
I'd bump Vraska's odds of death to 3 out of 3. Why? Because Jace will need some Manpain™ to do what must be done to finally kill Nicol Bolas. Also it'll get rid of the competition for Jace to be paired up with Liliana, who will most likely survive to further the whole Raven Man storyline. Though I DO like your idea of her becoming a lich. Tin Foil Theory: A lot of hype was made in backstory that Nicol and Ugin were the only elder dragons who didn't have two names. I think that in the end they will both merge together to create Nicol Ugin. Something something two halves of a soul, something something balance.
I Just binged on all your "Magic Arcanum" series including the Bolas saga. This is some of the best MTG content on youtube. Also, now I'm sad that I don't have anymore to watch :(
i honestly can't thank you enough. so many times i've wanted to know something about the magic lore but its always so daunting to get into it, or not immediately get lost in the sea of places, characters and events you need to know about for a story. you manage to break it all down into a digestible and entertaining video explaining the part of the story i was interested in. thank you for being my go to source on the magic the gathering story.
I don't think Gideon will die here, but I do think that he WILL die on Theros and use it as a means to meet Elspeth and the two escape the Underworld along with Dack Fayden's help.
@redlacer1 that's pretty smart actually. It was predicted that he would die the next time he faces a god, so what if he's like "hey, Heliod ya dick, come and get me!" in order to die so he can reach Elspeth?
@@ebonstone2980 you might be right Gideon becoming an orzhov could be a thing cause from the trailer his heart is pierced and we all know Chad dying before his climax is either lazy elspeth (again) or another forget moment
Lumi Jo Marketing also loves it when people buy new product because a big event is going on. Yes, it’s hard to start a new advertising campaign, but when you’re buying into a story with characters, those characters can die. It’s expected by everyone.
Huge congrats on the 1 million for the series! Much deserved. I really hope Vraska finds a way to survive. She's such a fun character and I love her planeswalker cards.
Nice video as always, love Magic Arcanum. My thoughts on some of the characters, where I got a slightly different opinion: -Karn: I disagree with the 1/3 odds. WotC clrearly intends to bring back the Phyrexia plotline at some point and since I believe the overarching storyline of the gatewatch is supposed to end with WAR, I think it's unlikely for the Gatewatch to continue the Phyrexian plotline, especially since they don't really have a history with the plane, unlike Karn: 0% -Nissa: I think there's a good chance she will appear in WAR, but I am absolutely certain she won't die, whether she goes to Ravnica or not. I honestly can't even explain why, I just don't feel like she's the type of character they would kill of in WAR. I believe she's one of the characters in the MtG lore that will just have a happy end somewhere down the line: 0% By the way I completely agree on the Vivien part lol. She seems so insignificant and not fletched out, with her sole purpose being her relation to Nicol Bolas, that it only makes sense to her to go out in WAR aswell. I don't really see a future for her storyline anyways. Also it would really be kinda hilarious and fitting for Bolas, that a planeswalker basically dedicates everything in her life to defeating Bolas only to fail miserably and die first. Edit: Turns out that pretty much everyone expect Garruk is confirmed to be on Ravnica in WAR, so I guess I'm wrong on that. Also we're both wrong on giving a lot of Walkers a 0% chance to die because they will appear in WAR against all expectations lol
What if Liliana actually kills another planeswalker (one from the GW), and then the shock frees her from Bolas' grasp, and she flees away. She would still retain her good'n bad reputation, somehow remain in the GW while not being fully accepted. I don't think she will die, same argument than the one you had with Jace, she's too popular. Also I'd love to see Bolas finally die (and a bunch of other PW, as they are too many now). MTG would benefit from a fresh villain. Great vid BTW !
Or, to use the time travel idea, instead of just killing Bolas in the past, and still has the contract, as theorised in the video...as a more tragic sacrifice, what if she decides to never sign the contract in the first place, allowing her to kill Bolas as she was now never linked to him, but will also mean she will never get to see her friends ever again! (Since this time she will die much younger than she currently is.)
What if the War of the Spark is that Nicol Bolas has found a way to create/steal planeswalker sparks and give them to other people? How crazy would that be?
His mosaic art shows wispy, glowing things flying towards him, so I bet that Bolas actually does have some way to absorb other people's sparks. Could be what he's hoping to use to become a god again.
Maybe Bolas doesn't need to kill planeswalkers in order to achieve whatever it is he is up to, but rather just needs a lot of planeswalkers (sparks) to be on the plane at once, similar to how the Eye of Ugin only works when there are 3 planeswalkers present. Would set up really well for a set that has a planeswalker in every booster pack, just like there was flip-card in every Shadow Over Inni pack - which is kinda what I'm expecting. That would be really cool to see, because such an abundance of planeswalker cards would push Wizards towards designing planeswalkers in some unique ways we haven't seen before, plus there would definitely be some good superfriends cards in the set.
I think so too, the candles going out in the teaser a lot of people thought that meant their lives being snuffed out when it can represent their sparks. But also realistically, once their sparks are gone they can also be vulnerable and possibly die in the war U_U
I think that liliana will sacrifice herself to save jace and Ravnica. But jace will use the chain veil to kill Nicol Bolas, becoming a demon telepath with Tibalt as his raven man character.
I quite by accident found the Magic Arcanum playlist and have now binged every video. They are all amazing! This one is so broad I am impressed by the scope of story that is told. I'd love to hear some stories on the Brothers War or the Dominaria/Phyrexia war.
You're making amazing videos! I've always felt in the dark about the broader stories in MtG. Your storytelling and knowledge of the whole story make for a really fun, gripping, and just over all enjoyable watch. Thanks for filling in the gaps, and for being so excited to tell us stories! Definitely going to keep watching
Are you going to adjust odds, given that a lot of your zeroes were justified by "I doubt they'll be there" and now we've got confirmation they actually will?
From a branding / corporate perspective (which supersedes the needs of the story, sadly), planeswalkers are the core of Magic and Wizards is super conservative about killing them off. I think we've only had one permadeath (Venser) in many years. So, as far as permadeath goes, I think that's a de facto free pass for popular walkers like Liliana (the third most popular walker after Jace and Chandra) and Bolas himself (Magic's most popular villain). Having said that, from a dramatic standpoint I think War of the Spark is the kind of story where, if you're going to kill planeswalkers, this is the time to do it. Bolas should die once and for all, here on Ravnica, or maybe suffer a Sauron-style fate where Jace cracks that egg between his horns, causing Bolas to be defeated so utterly that he's reduced to existing as some vaguely threatening wind. Gideon is also being set up for death, though I prefer the idea of him "dying" on Theros to be able to see Elspeth rather than permadying on Ravnica. Liliana doesn't need to die per se, but this needs to be the end of her whole story arc up to this point, and either she needs to die or else grow as a character and begin a whole new arc. As for who I hope doesn't die, I sure hope they don't kill off Vraska. I liked her character from the beginning, and even more since Ixalan. I hate it when cool female characters get killed off to provide motivation to male protagonists. It's way too common a trope. I hope she's got a lot of interesting adventures ahead of her. Lastly, I'm adding my vote to Saheeli and Huatli showing up to Ravnica in Hyper Mega Dino Zords. Throw in some of Huatli's exquisitely awful poetry and my inner twelve-year-old will die of joy.
Planeswalkers I want to see for WotS: 1. Sorin (I know he's stuck but maybe Ugin gets him out?) 2. Ugin 3. Nahiri Twist: would love to see Aurelia get a spark!

"Sit around and laugh at how wrong I was" I just found this channel after hearing about the 36 planeswalkers that will get cards. Too bad this wasn't filmed two days later! My guess (I have no info for this) is that Ashiok has been quietly building a nightmare army and is the hero of the set!
So a bunch of the planeswalkers you gave zero ratings to because they wouldn’t show up on ravnica are now confirmed to show up on ravnica. Looking forward to the follow up video of your new predictions
"Gideon shouldn't die, he has to complete his story arc!" Not only dies, but is the most prolific death in the War and ALSO doesn't show up again in Theros: Beyond Death. :)
But hey, at least we got a throwaway plot in Strixhaven of Liliana trying to find a way to bring him back when ITS WELL KNOWN PEOPLE ON THEROS CAN RETURN FROM THE UNDERWORLD AND ELSPETH DOES EXACTLY THAT AHHH
I would find it hilarious if Tibalt got a card in the new set and it was really strong! It would be a subtle middle finger to the community who railed on the old Tibalt.
Dack I believe was confirmed on Ravnica, idk if involved Elspeth was hinted at being a Returned, if she's on Ravnica it's to be with Ajani I feel like Kaya might escape to another ghost infested plane (Kamigawa) Tamiyo might be around for Kamigawa Vivien I agree with. Especially with the whole Grixis Favoring thing. Selesnya getting a recycled mechanic and Green having the record for the most Core Walkers. For Bolas, his fate actually determines the future of Magic the Gathering. Whether he lives or dies, the result shows what the future of Magic the Gathering will be focused on. Bolas living - Grixis Favoring is normalized. Much like with Kaladesh, Amonkhet, and Ixalan block, we can expect each set to feature new and dynamic cards to be heavily focused in the Grixis color scheme. Selesnya left to heavy recycled mechanics, or cards with far less strength. Bolas dying - Grixis favoring ends. Regardless of Planeswalker survivors the game goes back to a Lorwyn/Alara level in terms of set strength and story. Planeswalkers will still be a thing but will no longer focus on them being the main element of a story. Sets will return to balanced cards and mechanics, with new thematics and strategies introduced to all colors of the set equally. We'd even see progress in the development of color schemes that have little love. Four color would be normalized in time, and eventually we'd be allowed to return to planes with a 4-Color dominance. (Like Alara)
I hope you guys read this spicy take. What if Tamiyo is there observing and recording and she gets cornered like you say, but then she uses one of the scrolls like she did (while mind controlled) against Emrakul, which would throw out some immense power and turn the tides in the fight against Bolas in the favor of the Gate Watch.
I'm sorry to say this but I feel like this video is overly confident about safety, considering this is literally magic's infinity war. I believe Bolas's secret machine is not just able to trap planeswalkers, but to forcefully pull them in ravnica, like a net or a fishing rod. It'd be amazingly awesome, and we would finally tie plots together and also finish a lot of secondary ones: Sarkhan, for example, has had his story finished so it is fairly expendable, just like Nahiri, Kaya, and a whole load more of people. Gideon dying would also make sense: he would sacrifice himself to help others probably, as a response to the taunt bolas did by saying "how easy is to be the hero if you think of yourself invulnerable" (or something like that). It's time we move on from the gatewatch. I hope Nicol Bolas wins but then dies in the process of becoming an oldwalker, due to a misscalculation or his machine being sabotaged.

What if *Jace* dies
@@danielwhite1890 then all of the magic community with rejoice in WotC's growth of a spine and refocus on quality (of both product and setting).

I Just binged on all your "Magic Arcanum" series including the Bolas saga. This is some of the best MTG content on youtube. Also, now I'm sad that I don't have anymore to watch :(
I wanna see Garruk show up and kill every planeswalker at Ravnica Punisher style ... 👍

Probably takes a swing at Bolas (the greatest potential trophy of all time, right?) so that Wizards can "redeem" him.

i honestly can't thank you enough. so many times i've wanted to know something about the magic lore but its always so daunting to get into it, or not immediately get lost in the sea of places, characters and events you need to know about for a story. you manage to break it all down into a digestible and entertaining video explaining the part of the story i was interested in. thank you for being my go to source on the magic the gathering story.
(Ryan) Thanks for the kind words and I hope you enjoy many more episodes with us!
I don't think Gideon will die here, but I do think that he WILL die on Theros and use it as a means to meet Elspeth and the two escape the Underworld along with Dack Fayden's help.
Nah he mega dead, he's so gonna sacrifice himself for someone and die, knowing he will die to prove the flavour text in gideon's defeat wrong
@redlacer1 that's pretty smart actually. It was predicted that he would die the next time he faces a god, so what if he's like "hey, Heliod ya dick, come and get me!" in order to die so he can reach Elspeth?
The one thing I'm certain about: Gideon will get corrupted by The Blackblade.
I think it will be in Theros, he gotta revenge his friends in combat with Erebos, the god of DEATH.
@@ebonstone2980 you might be right
Gideon becoming an orzhov could be a thing

I think you're overestimating the chances of anybody, even Bolas, dying. Marketing gets real upset when you kill their iconography.
Lumi Jo Marketing also loves it when people buy new product because a big event is going on. Yes, it’s hard to start a new advertising campaign, but when you’re buying into a story with characters, those characters can die. It’s expected by everyone.
Big point that death isn't really final for much of the magic story either. so not a huge worry when you can write around it.
Huge congrats on the 1 million for the series! Much deserved.
I really hope Vraska finds a way to survive. She's such a fun character and I love her planeswalker cards.

- Domri: Dead
- Gideon: Dead
- Bolas: Defeated, but not dead
Nice video as always, love Magic Arcanum.
My thoughts on some of the characters, where I got a slightly different opinion:
-Karn: I disagree with the 1/3 odds. WotC clrearly intends to bring back the Phyrexia plotline at some point and since I believe the overarching storyline of the gatewatch is supposed to end with WAR, I think it's unlikely for the Gatewatch to continue the Phyrexian plotline, especially since they don't really have a history with the plane, unlike Karn: 0%
-Nissa: I think there's a good chance she will appear in WAR, but I am absolutely certain she won't die, whether she goes to Ravnica or not. I honestly can't even explain why, I just don't feel like she's the type of character they would kill of in WAR. I believe she's one of the characters in the MtG lore that will just have a happy end somewhere down the line: 0%
By the way I completely agree on the Vivien part lol.
I'm thinking Gideon goes down (story arc be damned), Vivien avenges him and then accompanies Karn to New Phyrexia.
I was waiting for that! Thanks man, I have not watched yet but I know I will have a great time!
"Dack Fayden, chance of death: zero." *snorts*
"Gideon, chance of death: 1/3." *snorts again*
What if the War of the Spark is that Nicol Bolas has found a way to create/steal planeswalker sparks and give them to other people?
How crazy would that be?
His mosaic art shows wispy, glowing things flying towards him, so I bet that Bolas actually does have some way to absorb other people's sparks. Could be what he's hoping to use to become a god again.
I am very happy that finally appeared a person who explains the story of the game in the form of films , not only in the form of articles. Great job !
I still want to see the split Elspeth planeswalkers- one zombie, one eidolon. That would be great.
MAKE MORE OF THESE! I love these so much! Some more of the older sets would be fun too! But what ever you do, just keep doing it!
If planeswalkers die, and vivan doesn't die, I will personally clog all of wizards' toilets.
Using hundreds of Nexus of Fate cards ***
Hey Ryan! I just wanted to say that I love this series! Thank you for all the great stories, and I look forward to many more.
I think they just confirmed that there will be a planeswalker in every pack.
@@silasbetit9659 yes they did, I called it :)
Vraska can’t die. She just got a good character arc. Come on
I think that liliana will sacrifice herself to save jace and Ravnica.
(Ryan) Thanks for watching! Older stories are definitely on the list, so you'll see them some day.
Arlen Kord and Saheeli make a Dino robot, Grimlock mattel promo card is then made Canon.
Michael Cassidy I have the same question
Considering one of is odds of death he rated 0 just got the fucking shit yeeted out of him by a fucking eternal he might need to. XD
Thanks, Magic Arcanum is really useful to track the story and know where the pieces are set in place. Cheers from Argentina 🇦🇷.
(Ryan) Excellent insights.

With a planeswalker in every pack, they probably won't be as expensive as you expect.
"Sit around and laugh at how wrong I was" I just found this channel after hearing about the 36 planeswalkers that will get cards. Too bad this wasn't filmed two days later! My guess (I have no info for this) is that Ashiok has been quietly building a nightmare army and is the hero of the set!

Elspeth was hinted at being a Returned, if she's on Ravnica it's to be with Ajani

Tamiyo might be around for Kamigawa
Vivien I agree with.
"Dack, odds of death, zero." - didn't age well
I hope you guys read this spicy take.
What if Tamiyo is there observing and recording and she gets cornered like you say, but then she uses one of the scrolls like she did (while mind controlled) against Emrakul, which would throw out some immense power and turn the tides in the fight against Bolas in the favor of the Gate Watch.
(Ryan) She really doesn't want want to use those scrolls though. But we'll see!
I'm half expecting Teysa to kill Kaya to hold claim over the Orzhov tbh
Also, I didn't know Liliana was a knee-cromancer
i look forward to every week listening to you!
It has been very fun to watch this video at present x'DDD (The predictions about Dack , Vivien ,Sorin.. etc). Great video and great channel, a lot of Magic History, a lot of fun, GOOD JOB!! ^____^
