- How to use a spiral wheel gold concentrator. This video show using a gold wheel to clean gold concentrates from a prospecting trip to the Fraser river. The spiral wheel or spiral gold concentrator does a great job of reducing gold concentrates and cleaning up gold. Some people use it as a primary recovery method, but I find it much more effective as a secondary clean up tool. This video shows the use and setup of a spiral wheel. The questions; How to use a spiral wheel? and; How to set up a spiral wheel? will bot h be answered in this video.
This video is produced by Dan Hurd, Prospector, Miner, Teacher and RUclipsr, as part of his RUclips channel based on educational videos about gold mining, gold panning, prospecting, rock hounding, and mineral collecting.

I don't know why I was recommended this but I am not disappointed.
Social media knows us better than we know ourselves...
Its AI
right?!
It’s satisfying lol
Thank you Mr. Hurd! You took the mystery out of this strange, hypnotic device.
Request: please do an episode on legal issues, staking a claim, prospecting on different kinds of land using different kinds of equipment, dealing with local laws and authorities, and such. If it's all too complex, I'd be happy if you could refer us all to reference materials and/or websites that address these matters.
Many thanks for all these helpful videos.
I have had one of these wheels in storage for over 10 years, and never used it, but you have inspired me to do so now. I believe I can set it up in the tub and go for it. Thank you, wish me luck.
Dan I wish there was more people in the world like you. It warms my heart to see someone doing what they love and still thinking of others while doing it. you have a subscriber for life my friend. High five to you from Utah
Thank you
And another from utah. In wyoming, but from utah. Agreeing with fahren....
You must be a wonderful teacher because your enthusiasm is infectious and will spark the interest in young people for a lifetime of learning.
Thank you!
I agree
I thought the same thing. If he doesnt work with kids, he should!
seems as tho Roy is a teacher as well
What grades does he teach?
you just tricked us into watching that spiral for 10 minutes, i cant see anymore

@@Danhurd great video's Dan! keep it up
Thanks
It's a hypnosis device. You don't remember that it was you that collected those samples because Dan wiped your memory. To tell the truth, we are all in on it. But don't say I told you.
This is why I love to watch you, your always looking out for everyone else. Mike has a great friend in you. Blessings from Australia
5 seconds in and I'm so glad I came across this fella. Exactly the type of bloke I'd expect to talk about prospecting.
Thanks!
As long as you are showing gold, we are watching 😁🤙
I try!
You do great brother ✊️

One of my favorite childhood memories was working alongside my dad as he fixed the family cars. Working with my dad taught me the value of hard work and sticking to a project until it is done right. Those moments in my childhood might seem small but they have made hard work and stick-to-itiveness a significant part of who I am today
This has to be the best educational video on the spiral wheel, it's limits, and abilities . Atta boy Mr. Hurd!
I love your presentation style and the fascinating ways you collect and concentrate gold. Thank you so much for sharing your work - I don't do cold and wet, so I'm glad someone is willing to do it!
This youtube channel is the best educational channel on gold prospecting on RUclips right now. So if u want to learn gold prospecting i would subscribe to this channel before any of the other channels. Just my opinion
I watched the whole video, and thanks to the Spiral Wheel, I was able to Quit Smoking. My Girlfriend on the other hand thinks she's a Chicken.

Dan, Thank you Finally someone sowed me how to operate the spiral wheel gold concentrator and recover gold from the use of process.🙂🙂
Great tutorial Dan. Think I like my pan method of cleaning best. Very generous but I don't mind sharing, couldn't have gotten the dang truck out without you and Doug LOL and now we have a great story to tell ;)

I wanna see a time and weight recovered comparison between processing with the spiral wheel and panning, and just using only a pan. Use the same paydirt and see what method is faster. That would be really cool. Still a neat tool!
Seems like a lot of extra work 😕

I’ll have to pan a lot of gold before buying one of these tools.
Yes, 95% of people out there should just stick with a gold pan. Something like this is only if you are taking it past the weekend hobby stage.
This is one of the most educational I have seen on the spiral wheel. Excellent video
Really like your channel...and also really like how you take the time to explain things and how it all works. I've never done any gold panning at all but would love to get into it. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.

Hey i loved your rc gold mining operation will you be resuming it?
Dude… I was watching you when I was 8 years old, I can’t believe your still uploading and doing great.
What up medic . I was just watching the ttc vids
Love the video Dan! Looks like this machine can do a little more bigger material than the blue bowl. So, it looks to me that that 45 degree mode allows to get rid of most of the black sand over the front lip. It does get lost with the dirt and non gold though. But, you can get it back with some magnets at least. I liked the black sand going up with the gold through the center. Your adjustments to control how much black sand vs gold was very interesting in that area. A tube where gold would be caught in the center could get fed into a blue bowl below and the black sand removed and caught in the bucket below. Just would need just enough water flowing so that it can flow into the bowl. A clear tube would be best as you would like to be able to see what is going on and be able to tell if anything is getting stuck in the tube.
There is just something so relaxing about this, and then the exciting part comes at the end! Awesome video Dan!
So nice to give the gold to your friend, you're a good man Dan Hurd.

Great Show! You’re video helped me understand the spiral wheel better. Thanks!
WOW, this is the absolute BEST video on how to work the gold wheels! I have the smaller blue one but, your information has helped me out SO SO MUCH!!!! Thank you very much, and I really enjoyed watching your video. I realize now, I have been doing my wheel completely wrong! However, I have kept my tailings so I can re-do them again =D When I first purchased the blue wheel, there was hardly ANY information about how to go about using it, I am so glad I found your video today!!! ;) I also subscribed to your channel, and look forward to watching more of your videos!
I enjoy doing this and need all the help I can get...I’m not a serious prospector, more the fun of-it than looking for that elusive pay-day!
could you not, in theory, run that stuff through a series of wheels at different settings for a completely automated process, gradually refining the take down to only gold ?
Yes, you can use a rock crusher to make everything you pick up small enough to go through the wheel too. Then its just a matter of time.
@@HalfInsaneOutdoorGuy you could use a mine to get the rocks 🪨 it's just a matter of time !
Lol at literally reinventing the wheel. That is basically the same concept miners were using 100 years ago to clean tiny tailings of pay dirt.
Iran kinda did it...
Great video Dan, nice to see different ways of cleaning up gold cons.
Thank you , Dan Hurd, for the very useful, interesting video. I have had a spiral wheel in the past, and I can only imagine how much gold that I lost; now with the new information from your video - no more lost gold!!

Nice!
I came into the room, and found my brother hypnotized by your spiral thing. How do I wake him up?
Take him prospecting
Thats awesome , lol
Start by throwing him in the nearest river. Then make him watch the video again to reverse it. Make sure he has less than $100 cash on him when you do this dep. Because he's going to go out and Prospect. If possible attach a GPS tracker before starting the video again. Also take his keys and any other Keys to Vehicles he's allowed to drive. When he is stopped being hyper rational about it you can plan an actual prospecting trip to an area where you can keep the gold you find
Thanks Dan, would you give me an estimate on how much a machine like that costs and do you have a favorite brand?
This was very mesmerizing. And the end result so beautiful. I think I am beginning to understate “gold fever”

You weren't even trying and you taught me how to pan better than anyone I've ever seen. Never really got shown how important classifying the material was.
Just curious if you ever figured out, after expenses, how much is your average hourly wage as a prospector?
Ha ha ha. Pennies?
hobby, no pay. For the rush of finding gold out in the wild by your own skill that no one else can have, it's rewarding, literally.
He said there were three people that day, and the final yield was 3.2g, which would be $135, assuming pure gold (which is almost certainly isn't)
That's a half-decent day's pay - for one person.

Would it make things faster if you were to place a magnetic strip on the outer edge?
Gold is a non-ferrous metal. Meaning that it's not attracted to a magnet
How do you separate the platinum from the gold ?
Only way I know how is mechanical separation, "Tweezers"
Do you go back and separate it or just leave it?
Could the assay process work here? Seems like it should... When the lead oxide reacts and turns into a conglomerate with whatever metals exist in a sample, do those metals fuse at the low lead melting temperatures? If not, reaching the boneash, lead separation step should suffice. If not, aqua regia is your best friend here...pt doesn't react in it. While it dissolves everything else.
The only way to effectively separate the platinum from the black sand is to put it into a crucible, flux it and heat it to at least 2000 degrees in a blast furnace. The flux should contain nickel carbonate in order to recover all 6 platinum isotopes otherwise you lose a lot of the platinum. Recovering the Platinum from the nickel sulphide button is tedious. It's a lot of work but if you are patient it will pay off. I tried to recover platinum with Lead oxide and lost three platinum metals. Palatium is one metal you don't want to lose. But I saw the palatium floating on top of the black slag. At first I thought it was silver but it was too shiney. Looked a lot like white gold.
@@coreymerrill3257 isn't that more of a "cody" question?
I’ve operated a number of those portable spiral concentrates and the one built by Keene Is outstanding because it is not as finicky about feed rate. The ultimate spiral concentrator is the Oro Industries horizontal spiral concentrator. We used 2 of them with different angles to recover ultra-fine gold and they performed beautifully with more forgiveness than a spiral wheel.
You have just the right of enthusiasm to be exciting and fun without being overly corny or overbearing or cringe. Its really wholesome and inviting.
Thanks!
Might be my eyes being bad, my monitor being a TV, or something, bur every time you show the spiral up close to show black sand and gold going in, I don't see ANY gold. It's clear to see the results when you show us the pan but I just don't see anything but black sand going in.
Took me a minute to realize “Cons” is Concentrates lol
