I recall an interview where she (very sadly) said that she'd never be very famous or wealthy because her face wasn't pretty enough and her legs were too short. It was shocking for all the little girls watching and listening to this accomplished atlete, that no matter how much a woman excells as an athlete it mattered for nothing if her legs weren't long enough or a face had acne or "not pretty enough", which isn't true, midori's lovely and sweet. I wonder if she would've been a gold medal winner if she had longer legs tho because the judges are so very cruel that way, they score a woman low in artistic merit if they don't like a reputation or a costume or the way you look. Midori forever.
You make some excellent points. In the documentary I mentioned Midori says the following: "I put those very difficult elements in my programs filling them till the limit of the women's rules. And I was happy I had done them successfully and that was recognized by the judges. That was the moment I really felt I have been recognized in the world with something other than good looks, even though I have no beauty." She had to fight an uphill battle in ladies figure skating to achieve recognition because she did not have the "classic figure" for ladies skating. She more than achieved it. A remarkable athlete and woman who as Scott Hamilton said during her 1990 world's long program "it will be 50 years till we see anyone like Midori Ito again."
i was shocked when i found out abt this too first from watching i, tonya. these girls worked hard for their routine, their jumps, their choreography, if some points goes to the costume i can see why but it shouldnt take up a lot of the points, but when they are being judged for something irrelevant, something that they dont have a choice over like; if their face fits the judges' ideal beauty standard or not or if their family is of the "american dream", then it shouldnt be figure skating shouldnt it? that judging system should be for, "who has the most ideal-all-around-american-dream poster face and life olympics"
Both her and tonya was so judge by how they looked even though in competitions they litteraly outshined every one of their competitors.
Midori forever
@@wolfywolfie9454 she not her were not was judged not judge literally not litteraly outshone not outshined Fix it!!
Her height on that triple axels was insane! 😱
Not only that. Midori is tiny, really tiny (145 cm), I don't know how she jumped that high. Wow.
Valeria Naranjo Cruz I know! :o
plus the fact that there was z.e.r.o. underrotation - perfectly landed. wow
I count the rotation and its four so why triple? Pls enlighten me
I think that if she has rotated faster, fixed her foot and arms position she would have been able to do a quad axel.
Queen of Axel. Her axels are strong than male's.
Dang, I love your profile picture😍😍
lala la I think her 3A is not as beautiful as Hanyu’s. In terms of ice coverage, Hanyu’s is still the biggest. In terms of height, i dont know.
Your comment made it seem like as if Male are higher
midori much better on everything especially better on height and prettiness of jump

There is a terrific documentary Japanese video with english subtitles on Midori which includes Midori interviews. The video must be around 11 years old or so. In it Midori talks about why she had to do a triple axel. She said that Katarina Witt was Olympic champion in 1988 doing 2 triple jumps. Midori did 5 different types of triple jumps at the Calgary Olympics and came fifth. She then decided she had to reactivate the triple axel. The video said at age 15 she fractured her ankle attempting a triple axel and her coach had then forbidden it. But she now wanted to win at the World Level and believed she needed the triple axel to do it. One of her goals was to attempt the triple axel at the next Olympic Games. So she reactivated it and landed one at the Paris World Championships in 1989 to help her win the World Championship. And of course she landed the incredible triple axel at Albertville. A truly amazing lady.
She was *born to make history*, I guess

I Love Midori Ito... she was Tonya Harding arch nemesis on the triple axel. But Midori was the first woman who landed the triple axel in History and the first to do it at the Olympic Games in Albertville 1992. No one can take that title away from her! You rock Midori! 🇯🇵👏👏🇯🇵
giocurve oo
giocurve tony Harding is a million times better she’s a much more powerful skater and midori knows it
Powerful? more like sloppy! How many World titles or Olympic medals does Harding have? End of discussion!
Just look at how high Midori jumps in this video. Is there any female skater to date can match? I can think of two current Canadian competitor Osmond and Daleman but they are still behind and no 3 ax.
Luna Creates - Tonya is not in the same league as Midori. Tonya's axels were tilted and wild. you expected her to land on her rear which she did most of the time. Tonya only landed the triple axel in 1991, never after that. Midori landed a triple axel 1st in 1988 and through 1996 in her professional career. There are videos on youtube entitled "ladies triple axel" showing the women who have landed a triple axel in international competition. some have ratings of the triple axels by the authors. Midori is rated number 1.
Midori's 3A is the prettiest (looks the highest, but that might be because she was really tiny, 145 cm), and Mao's 3A is the most consistent. Wow Japan, what do you feed them?
Valeria Naranjo Cruz Ramen and sushi....XD
And BTW that height looks insane not because she's tiny but because that height is insane! 》
Sashimi and ramen!
Valeria Naranjo Cruz Mao’s triple Axel was not consistent at all. She couldn’t even hit it consistently after 2010, and the few times she did they were underrotated, barely got off the ice , and was boring to watch in the air due to her extremely tight body position. Midoris was not only More consistent- she was hitting it til 1996 - it was the highest, longest distance traveled, and most importantly the most dynamic to watch mid air due to her unorthodox and extremely difficult high cross-legged position. No one else but Ito can create this awesome texture in the air. Other jumpers including male keep a tight position in the air to avoid drag and therefore rotate faster and be able to complete rotations without needing to jump higher (what I call a boring jump ). Midori on the other hand uses a wider leg stance to create drag and offset rotations to avoid overrotating. Why ? Because she jumps that high!!! As in hiiiiigh. If she maintained a tighter legs stance she would over rotate. And probably land a quadruple axel but she chose not to because that would have just killed her ankle.
quiddy Mao's triple axel was beautiful! SHE was one of the best All time, legend like Ito.
quiddy - very accurately stated. I have read that Midori's leg wrap on the triple axel and her jumps in general were to prevent over rotating because she jumped so high.
28 years later, we’re still talking about her and what she was capable to do. If this isn’t the sign of a myth... You’re unforgettable Midori since you’re history.
It brought tears to my eyes seeing her laugh when she successfully landed the 3A... what a height she jumped 👏👏👏
This is honestly what practically all athletes fight for. Not to say you do a sport solely for making history, but being able to push one's self to the point of being the first in the world to accomplish something is a high that nothing can match.
So proud of Midori for advancing the sport forward.
Ever noticed most of the women who have landed the 3A in competition and all of those who have landed it at the Olympics (Midori, Mao and Mirai) are of Japanese descent?
I hope Rika Kihira will make it to Olympics 2022, coz she's one of the ladies who can do 3A
the first woman to jump a quadruple was Miki Ando! So they are all of Japanese descent and their names starts with M!
Her jumps were soooo powerful and explosive, just insane
That smile though after nailing it! Beautiful.. That was a memorable moment and she is a legendary athlete..
Midori’s jump is so high and clean!
I still remember Midori Ito.. loved watching her when I was a child.
A legend ❤️ Best lady's triple AXEL jumper of all the time. She did it so many times clean and so height
I remember her
and I remember loving her so much
she was one of the greatest skaters the world has ever seen
Look at the massive height she achieves. Legend.
I feel really good when people who work really hard to achieve great stuff are honoured.
First woman to do a triple axel! Amazing
go midori!!! one of the best skaters of all time!
Her 3A height insane 😱😱
I love the old jumps. Don’t know what happened but Midori, Michelle, Yuna... and other top figure skater’s jumps were much higher and stronger than jumps nowadays. Midori’s 3A quality is still a legend.
I did pray for her to be perfect on her next attempt and she did 🙏🙌👏 college days and was rooting for her 😀😉✌🏼
No one will ever jump like Midori ito!
I was a huge fan of Midori in the 1980s. Fantastic athlete.
This was definitely a definitely moment for both her and the sport. The look on her face when she landed her second attempt, even if it was not for the gold. She made history for sure!
Still the best triple axel I’ve ever seen among female skaters (and most male skaters too)!!! The height of that jump just blows me away.
seeing her succeed at her second attempt gives me chills
This channel is better the Nbc. Is the OFFICIAL OLYMPIC SPORT channel.
And now Mirai Nagasu's done it too.. :-D
Both of them are amazing women!!
Midori and Mao, Queens of the Triple Axel ❤❤ Now, Mirai ❤ All Japanese 👍👍👍
Look out for Rika Kihira from next season on. She's only 15 and has already landed 3A-3T in competition.
Isnt mirai american?
@@ivanlavouras I'm pretty sure she's speaking ethnicity wise.
and their names all start with "M" XD
She didn’t even have to close her legs all the way to get full rotations, that’s how huge the jump is
Her triple axle is full of power speed and height. That's impressive. Mao is elegant and effortless. Maria is kind of in between.
Midori was ahead of her time, competing now she would have been gold
That 2nd triple axel in the back half of her long program in 1992 was incredible, and perfectly done after she'd been struggling with it all week.
Courage & grace & determination
Midori-san is iconic 💚
As kid back then she was my favorite figure skater by far.
Midori Ito actually is high jump triple axel also the first female triple axel in history...congratulation Midori Ito
"She crushed it"
"And she knew it!"
YASH!
she is just amazing! her triple axel is perfect!
That speed and that height- just wow.
Midori Ito forever!!
She also performs it the best. The height of the jump just WOW
Midori's problems in Albertville were all psychological and she was having issues connecting and getting the height she usually had. The second attempt was a heroic feat of psychology. Physically the triple axel was easy for her.
Her triple axle is still my favorite. She is small but has so much height to her jump. She has so much control.
I guess we could say that moment was a history maker
Her face when she landed it!!
i'm so proud
Congrats Midori Ito,!👏👏👏🎌🎉
Legendary lady!! 🙌🏻
Запомнил ее единственную и самую лучшую в этом виде спорта и красоты,! Мне сейчас 47 лет,
We were born to make HISTORY
The height of Midori's triple axel was 60-70cm but Rika Kihira mentioned that Mao's and her triple axel is only around 30-40cm.
Nobody covers the ice on their jumps like she did!😽
this is so great to see when hard work pays off
YES SHE WAS BORN TO MAKE HISTORY
Midori Ito , Azerbaijan love you !
Wow😮❤😊 qué gran patinadora
She is high jump triple Axel.. first female skater 💕
Wow . Incredibly great.
Because she’s the Queen!!!
“Tiny”? No, she is BIG by all means!!
I get the chills
Good and best
Queen
B-B-BORN TO MAKE HISTORY!!
her legs must be SO SO powerful getting up so high into the air like that
Another interesting point on how far the sport progressed: there is currently a 10 year old doing the triple Axel. She learned to do it along her 12 year old sister.
born to make history
Yaaaaaaaaas I'm a supportive fan from Korea
Figure skating has evolved so much - now the triple axel is much more common and we have people attempting to do the quad axel... It's a fascinating sport.
There was another skater who nearly hit her on the head during practices, causing her to lose concentration in the actual skating rounds afterwards. If that woman didn't do that, Ito could have had composure and landed her triples nicely.
The legendary skaters
TONYA HARDING
NANCY KERRIGAN KRISTI YAMAGUCHI
SURYA BONALY
MIDORI ITO
I never understand how people end up living thumbs down on these kinds of videos like .... What do you dislike ? The figure skating ? Just don’t click on the video then
Браво!!! Это просто космос!!!
She's so cool! She went really high despite being shorter! ❤❤
Tonya and Midori are triple axel QUEENS
I am named after Midori Ito!!!! I love my namesake
I got tears.. Strange!

Oh my god.... the HEIGHT!!

Nice, Ito is doing a triple axel, now it’s going on.
