Shani Davis is one of the greatest long-track speedskaters in history, a man who dominated the sport for a decade, set world records, won four Olympic medals and became the all-time World Cup points leader.
In fact, Shani Davis was the first black athlete of any nation to win an individual Winter Olympics gold medal. As an African American and Chicaogoan, he always felt that he had to work 10 times harder to prove himself in a sport where he had to endure the label of being the “the only one”. His lasting legacy will be breaking down imposing barriers to become one of the best ever in his sport, all while refusing to conform to public image expectations. Davis is a complex man reminding us that athletes don’t have to come in perfectly wrapped packages to root for them.

I grew up with Shani that's my boy we proud of you !!!
Back in the day the white boys use to treat him bogus so I traveled with him to a few speed skating races with him for support
He's the man. We felt the hostility that he had to endure as we were in the midst of our research. We hope that he has been able to find peace and joy in his retirement and current chapter of his life!

Black Excellence Excellist I don’t know how commenting on here works but thank you for shedding light on Shani. For you all to only research and find this information, you guys did an awesome job. Just a few more facts two years he won the 1000m World Cup the entire season not losing one. Shani was the best to lace them up and should’ve won in 2014 but the controversy was true. He has won all but one 1000m that season. Not to finish on the podium and the following week after the Games win again doesn’t make sense. Just saying

I'll tell you something about Shani David not mentioned here that he has said many times - he does not see himself as a "black" athlete winning gold medals, but as an American athlete winning gold medals. He damn near made the NBC reporter lose her train of thought in the post gold medal interview when he first one. I've always respected that about Shani - he never makes it a race thing.
Excellence for real
Shani is considered to be the best technical speedskater. In my country(the Netherlands )longtrack speedskating is a major sport. Shani is considered sporting royalty, overhere. As a black person myself, it was refreshing and cool to see a person of colour on the ice. And these days, there is an increase of speedskaters of colour in my country. Back in the day, if you said you liked speedskating, your fellow black friends or family would make fun of you. 'That's a sport for lame, white people. Are you trying to be white?'. Yeah, really weird. But Shani showed that speedskating isn't 'lame' or 'for white peope'. He was hugely popular and very generous with his time with the dutch press. Super laid-back, always in for a joke and 'stubborn'...Dutch people love people who are straight to the point and lowkey. Chad Hedrick was also a great skater but he wasnt loved here. He was the stereotypical loudmouth american. Shani was more down to earth, humble and confident. Great guy.
