This is such an amazing accomplishment! I thought most elite athletes start during childhood. To take up a sport later in life & win a gold medal is a huge deal.
She was one of the fastest roller skaters in the world. She already had the fundamentals down, she just transitioned to ice so she could win an Olympic Gold Medal.

You can tell how uncomfortable Erin is of how these people kept bringing up race in the conversation. Erin is awesome, she just wants to be recognized as an olympic champion in speedskating, not the 1st black woman olympic champion in speedskating.
Exactly. Her race has absolutely nothing to do with how awesome she is... she isn't an awesome black athlete, shes an awesome athlete. Its demeaning to say shes only awesome out of her fellow blacks... ugh
Just because her generation doesn't know the context experientially does not mean it shouldn't be mentioned. Why would you want the past to be erased? It explains why the Winter Olympics is not flooded with Black athletes to this day.

It is very common to make the transition for inline skaters too ice in about 2 years. Both Derek Parra, and Jennifer Rodríguez, did it in about 2 years.
Living in South Florida I've mentoring skaters all over the world including Eddy Alvarez.
It is time for an outreach program by the USA ice speed skating community to encourage inline skaters to take a step to
the Olympic level.
Agreed it's time for these larger sports organizations to look outside the box to find talent and mentor these young kids!

Where were you and Oprah when Shani Davis won wordtitles, broke world records and won 3 gold Olympic medals in the same sport? A black man from Chicago who got ignored by Oprah and Gayle. He is superfamous in the Netherlands(my country) although he doesnt visit often.. By far, the best technical skater and not one mention of him? Shani Davis was the first african american to not only win....he dominated in longtrack speedskating. For years. Where are his flowers?
