    Unless Silfab has changed its frame from several years ago, the frame was flimsy and when torquing the mounting the clamps, the frame would twist and you would get a very uneven-looking array would looking down a row of panels.

    Every home and business should install a rain water collection and storage system along with solar panels.
    Even in areas where rain is infrequent it is crazy to waste the little rain that does fall and waste it.
    We need to stop planting green lawns and switch to local native plantings around homes.
    It is crazy to plant lawns and build golf courses in dry desert areas. We waste too much water and electricity.

    Sunpower is better with more power output due to the interconnections being on the back of the panel. They produce about 50% more power watt for watt. They run the coolest in high heat to produce the most.

    Great review. I do have a question;
    I wrote a white paper a year ago that outlined six reasons why solar power has been slow to catch on with consumers. One of those reasons was shingle age. I just don't think anyone with fifteen-year-old shingles would consider a solar install without also replacing the roof.
    In your experience, where does the roof-age cutoff typically sit in the homeowner mindset? Five years? Ten? And do you have professional guidance for them on that matter?

    • @jackthesolarguy
      @jackthesolarguy  Год назад +7

      With an asphalt shingle roof, I always recommend that if it is greater than 10 years old, you go ahead and get it replaced before you install panels on your roof.
      One cool thing that you can do, which few people know about, is that you can claim the 30% solar tax credit for your new roof investment, since it is considered necessary for your solar system.
      Also, when you do get your new roof, make sure you let it sit for a month, before you allow solar installers on top to install. New roofs typically need a month for the cellophane under the shingles to set, and fully stick, or else you can damage your new roof.

      @@jackthesolarguy Where did you read that the cost of a roof replacement qualifies for the tax credit? I just had a roof replaced prior to getting solar panels and everything I read cautioned against trying to claim a credit for the cost of the re-roofing (replacement of shingles, no structural changes). Things may have changed with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, but below are the instructions to the IRS form 5695 that would have been used prior to the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act:
      "Qualified solar electric property costs. Qualified solar electric property costs are costs for property that uses solar energy to generate electricity for use in your home located in the United States. No costs relating to a solar panel or other property installed as a roof (or portion thereof) will fail to qualify solely because the property constitutes a structural component of the structure on which it is installed. Some solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles serve the function of both traditional roofing and solar electric collectors, and thus serve functions of both solar electric generation and structural support. These solar roofing tiles and solar roofing shingles can qualify for the credit. This is in contrast to structural components such as a roof's decking or rafters that serve only a roofing or structural function and thus do not qualify for the credit."

    • @jackthesolarguy
      @jackthesolarguy  Год назад +1

      You are correct. The exact language on what qualifies for the new inflation reduction act tax credit, specifies that it must be a Tesla shingle roof, in order to get credited. The 30% roof credit was a rumor that went around for the longest time, but has since been cleared up.

    Great info. I am just beginning to do some research for a system. Question for you that you may not be able to answer. I live in ND, not exactly solar heaven. Would like to put up panels that I can at least change the tilt angle seasonally. Cold, snow, wind are all hear. Any thoughts on best panels and components for this area, without getting too involved? The Aptos panels sound the most likely, but I noticed are the least efficient. Is that a big deal?

      I have never personally worked with panels that offer that type of racking, so I cannot answer that question for you. Aptos is a great option if you get substantial snow pack, and I wouldn’t worry too much about the efficiency.
