Hey Guys! Nice recap. Since 1965 my family has owned a home on Double Bay, the Atlantic side of the island across from Ten Bay, basically. Our home is Seagreen and sits on a 2 mile long beach of amazing waters. It is remote and theft is not a problem as it may be than the settlements. It is very much a developing island and the infrastructure has a lot to be desired. Poverty does exist but there are so many good christians that no one goes without. (I'm an atheist with christian character lol) . I say, "come for the beaches and stay for the people".
You did a good job of describing a typical trip to the island the pros and cons. They say it is 110 miles long and a smile wide. Eleuthera has the 3rd largest GDP of all the 200 hundred inhabited islands in the Bahamas. Seeped in history, and was a the Royal's hangout in the 1970's-80's, there is much more to see. Yes to visiting Spanish Wells, Spanish Wells has a lot of fishing charters and yes to Harbour Island, but don't short shift the south where there is the Island School and the Cape Eleuthera Institute, cool science and conservation stuff, and The One Eleuthera Foundation, a giant training school with an amazing greenhouse. Rock sound has the Ocean Blue Hole, which is not nearly as pretty as the Sapphire Blue Hole in the north which is really a must... along with Preachers cave not far from Sapphire. If you are going to jump into Sapphire make sure you have strap on sandals to climb out. It is doable. Don't be discouraged to take the leap. I am a 63 year-old woman with two knee replacements and I did it.
Eleuthera is growing fast. Ten years ago only a few charters and tour services existed, now there are dozens. My friends Clyde and Anne own the Island Farm and pretty much where I do my shopping, so good find. They are expanding by leaps and bounds. There were only fruits and veggies a few years ago, they added baked goods which was a hit, then liquor and now meats and I thing the are going to ope a small cafe too. If you are coming back, know that there are 3 airports Governors Harbour (GHB), Rock Sound and North Eleuthera (ELH). American goes direct to GHB a couple of days a week, but to be honest with you I often go through Nassau (NAS) and take a local plane , like Pineapple Air, to GBH. They are rebuilding ELH and GHB is also expanding. I prefer to go through US customs in NAS.
In any case we hope to see you back on the island soon. Check out Eleuthera Direct for rentals too. They don't charge a booking fee like airbnb and VRBO. Here is our place, listed there.
