- Documentary on the creation of the musical Chess and the recording of its original concept album
.
Music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA.
Lyrics by Tim Rice.
Featuring the original core cast: Murray Head, Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg
If this had been the only thing Benny and Bjorn ever composed, it would have solidified their place in the pantheon of music giants, but then throw in ABBA, and Kristina, and their genius is unrivaled in modern times.
couldn't agree more
Their promotion was always top notch!👍
When I saw Chess in London in 1986, I was completely brown away from the intensity yet outstanding music score. To me this is one of underrated musical pieces in my opinion. I would put this above Phantom of the Opera! I hope, someone makes a movie version…😢
Omg, thank you for this! I am currently on a Chess kick!
Yes, I agree. A very complex work, both lyrically and musically that I think most people (myself included) at the time found rather difficult to get a handle on. Very original but sadly misunderstood piece though, unfortunaltely.
Thank-you!
I saw the original in London back in 1984 and it blew me away. I still listen to the original score today in 2024. Quite simply the best musical masterpiece ever created.
Chess premiered in London's West End on 14 May 1986.
@@jayrox40 there was a series of concerts before the musical was fully staged, perhaps he meant he saw one of the concerts?
I love the original soundtrack. One of the few scores I can listen to from beginning to end.
@@larrydalesowell1016 Im the same. That concept album is just perfect and so evocative and intriguing , especially before the [roducyion was staged and we'd had a chance to see what it was actually like too. you had to use your imagination.
@@jayrox40 I saw it back then in the opening week
The best musical words and music ever!
I saw Chess in ‘87 with these two.. almost 40 years later this has been the greatest experience and I am still listening and actually more fascinated by the lyrics and music.. A MASTERPIECE
Beautiful Music! ❤ I met Tommy Korberg backstage in 2022 after a performance of his own show in Stockholm. I said to him…’Tommy! I don’t think you sing Anthem enough! His reply to me was ‘I only got it last week!!’ 😂 Wonderful! 😊
Currently rehearsing this at the moment. Fascinating to see the origins of it.
A true masterpiece of music !! watch CHESS IN CONCERT 2008 over and over
I’ll never forget (or forgive) Elaine Paige in 1979 on Juke Box Jury slagging off the new ABBA single “Angeleyes” as a “miss”.
As a fan of the album, this was an interesting doc. I watched a version of Chess in Dublin many years ago, and I have to say it was disappointing. You just cant beat the album quality of the music. A lot is missed in live performances. As such I am not really surprised the stage show did not last long in the West End.
Funny how Tommy says he is 36. Now 76!
Great score but the musical on stage lacked drama and the ending was all over the shop
One of the greatest scores ever written. ❤
Thank you so much for this. Chess really is a masterpiece of words and music. A great production.
Thank you for posting. I saw this on TV here in Australia back in 1984 or 85, probably on SBS , so it’s great to see it again. Not sure I agree with another comment about live productions being inferior - there was an amateur production by Cloc Theatre here in Melbourne in 2023 that absolutely nailed the music, it was hard to tell the difference from the original album.
Best musical I've ever heard!
It was such a pleasure to watch this documentary!
And Benny's smile at the end says it all.
Many thanks for sharing!
I bought the album when I was living in Iceland because of the name "CHESS". It intrigued me because I could never win at the game. Something the younger generations will never understand is that when you have nothing else to do you will play the same record thousands of times. The tune "One Night in Bangkok" introduced me to Thailand. I've been there about 25 times since then.
In all of the golden cloisters which you visited, were you fortunate enough to find a god who was a she?
@@ChrisHyde537 Yes, every time.
Although the transgenders can look good in photographs, when they talk or walk you know instantly. Those that go with transgenders are doing it intentionally. Why they do that I don't know.
Bangkok is the most fascinating city ever. It has soul
Oh my God, this is so beautiful.
Thank you for making this available.
Thanks from a long time of this production. What a great compilation of the significant players and moments in this significant work of art.
I didn't know about this documentary so thank you for sharing! Interesting that the London Symphony Orchestra had no women at all when the soundtrack was recorded!
Lol, but they did let an Australian in 😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks a lot for sharing this!
thanks danke super Klasse ein Erlebnis das anzuschauen Fan :-)
First of all… definitely thought this would be a documentary about chess. But when i heard them describe the plot of the musical, i realized its basicly the same plot as chilly gonzales’ movie Ivory Tower (2010), funny to see where he got it from
They should turn it into a movie, like Mamma Mia
Benny is god!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😮😊
Thank you !
THANKS!!....AND BRAVO!!
Oh look ar elaine getting pissed off because the lead man is better than she is xx go Tommy xx
Wow, Benny and Bjorn has the music in their heads and not written a score.....they get some one else to write the score.....I believe a lot of music recorded with ABBA was the same, not written down....amazing talent....
With the record...yep I have one, it is great, but seeing the actual musical it makes more sense as to the story....
Great! ❤❤❤
Севастополь привет!
