I'm so glad
I used to ride my mom's TWH mare and she was 16hh when I was 3 years old. That mare would take such good care of me, but of course way back then (50 years ago) we didn't use helmets or anything. Luckily nothing dangerous happened although I would walk and trot her by myself!

I had a beautiful shetland I rode when I was between 2-3 years old. When my mother would take naps, she was preggo with my brother, I would sneak out to the paddock where Cappy was. Climb up on the fence where he walked, he would stop where I was. I got on and rode the length of the fence, he would stop, I got off, then he would run all the way around his padock where I would be waiting to get on again. Such a vivid memory! My older brother wouldn't let me get off one time...I stayed on Cappy until he was about half way around the paddock (he alwas galloped) I hit the ground. Not a bit hurt though. I got right back on agin at the fence.

We accidentally discovered what a great confidence boosting tool it is for a child to wear a protective riding vest - after our bio kids were already grown.
I bought the first tiny protective vest pre owned, for a young child with challenges who had come to live with us, but the real 💡 moment for me came when after a kind of hard fall from a pony, and almost before I could react, the child got up laughing and said: “I bounceded!”.
The vests are available in a wide range of colors and styles these days. That particular child is a teen now and is currently wearing a camouflage pattern version from Hoka. So far, knock on wood, falls have been few and far between, so it has not been tested.

Aww my first pony’s name was sneakers I started riding when I was her age. I loved it so much that when I was not done riding my mom would just put me in a stall on the pony 🥰

I have had my Haflinger mare for 23 years now, so my daughter (now10) knows her from birth. We were on walks together with a stroller when she was a baby/ toddler. When she very small, she was rather afraid of horses, also my mare was not very careful in the beginning. When my daughter was around three, she started sitting on the horse for a little bit, later I had her sitting on the pony and the stroller with my younger child in the other hand, and we could all have a walk together. I often just used a pad and a lunging belt with a strap on top to hold onto. My daughter continued riding till today, on our old mare she can go for a little walk around the pastures alone with her. On our second horse she started learning trot and canter around 18 months ago. Canter is not her favorite thing, because my daughter is not very confident in General. She is also not very comfortable around the other horses living together with ours.
Her reflexes sitting on the horses are great, for instance when they stumble, and she has never fallen off yet. Our old mare has never bucked, and the new one has only bucked with me while trail riding, thankfully not with my daughter.

Sounds like a lovely family and learning to enjoy horses together, how peaceful.
One very sucessful dressage rider I knew as a child was first put on a pig at this age. Leaner than a pony and not so far to fall. She was still riding in her 80s.

When I was five the horse I would take lessons on spooked at something in the tree line. She took a few canter steps and I plopped off but unfortunately for in the way of her and her hoof came down on my thigh. Took me two years to get back on.

My first memory is my mom setting me on her horse because I was underfoot. Dot was NOT a babysitter, he simply half hopped once. I landed in the soft just tilled garden soil. I did grow learning to ride him, but that was the beginning!
Sounds like you were a tough cookie!
Not only is confidence fragile so are the head and neck of those little kids. There's a reason many riding programs won't take them until they are older and it isn't just attention span. Obviously if mom is in charge and the family is horsey they do better.

My aunt had a pony so that’s where I first got into it and I refused to trot at all because lucky me was born with anxiety that I inherited from the parents so I spent almost a year just walking of course I still loved it
Now however I’m a devil for speed and adrenaline lol
