I have decided I was gonna read only classic horror this spooky season. So, right now I'm reading "The turn of the screw" and then "The king in yellow". I'm gonna add "hell house" cause you make it sound very interesting.
As someone new to reading (mostly audiobooks) I absolutely love your channel, content, and recommendations. I've got a backlog now as long as an elephants truck! Keep up the awesome work!!
Oh the paleontologist sounds great! Never read the novel Jurassic park but I do enjoy the films right now reading wise, I'm reading what I have on my shelf. Currently for the month of October I'm documenting my thoughts on recent stories I've read by H.P. Lovecraft; quite a lot of variety with these short stories. 🎃❤📚
I had the opposite reaction to Light Most Hateful and Silent Key - thought the former was okay and loved the latter. I love that BookTube gives us that variety of views on books. I really do need to read Rebecca! The Palaeontologist looks fun and Bluebeard’s Castle sounds very interesting
the paleontologist sounds right up my alley!! so glad you had a good time with rebecca 🍁 i've reread it this month because it really puts me in the perfect autumn mood. i also recently read i who have never known men, a dystopian novel, and man that was a gut punch.
Rebecca is a very old book 📕 but I have never read it and I own three copies of it so I must read it fantastic video and a brilliant and amazing channel prayers and blessings for you and your family love your number one Aussie family friend and supporter John ❤❤❤
Hi from Alberta! Not sure if you have been to Drumheller and The Royal Tyrell Museum of Palaeontology, but if not you should. Come in the summer, and you can do a walk to see digs in progress.
I looooooooove that Musseum. It's honestly my favourite travel destination I Canada. I'm trying to get my kid excited about dinos so we can hopefully go one of these summers
Too bad The Collector didn't work. I love that idea of having certain memories removed (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!) and exploring the consequences of such an action.
I am trying to see if Ray Bradbury is an author for me this spooky season - I loved The Martian Chronicles when I re-read it in August, but I was pretty disappointed in both The Halloween Tree and Fahrenheit 451 since. I'm currently reading The October Country and early prognosis is not looking good lol I still have Something Wicked This Way Comes, but I'm a bit surprised how loved some of these stories are. Anyway, I absolutely fell in LOVE with David Sodergren this year, and The Haar is my latest 5 star read. Funny, violent, emotional, great characters, I bet you'd love him too if you haven't read him yet.
If you're recommending a classic, then I know it must be good! 😏 I have been wanting to read Rebecca for some time, though, but it's good to hear your thoughts on it. My spooky season has been fantastic! I read Fracassi C A with Strangers and now I'm almost finished with Malfi's December Park. Both books are just fantastic! I think next up will have to be Boys in the Valley since Fracassi impressed me that much.
What do you think about the classics? I mean , classic ghostly stories, like M.R. James "A Warning to the Curious", "Room 13" and the series of tales of terryfing spooks in the book In A Glass Darkly by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu?
@@TheShadesofOrange And the short stories in the book Can Such Things Be? by Ambrose Bierce? There's one of my favorite stories: "The Night Doings at Deadman's".
I am excited for Paleontologist. Blue Beards Castle seems interesting. I might check that one out. I appreciate you not spoiling Rebecca because I have also not read it before! Or seen the movie. I have already had Jane Eyre spoiled and don't want the same thing to happen to this one.
From what I've read so far this October, my favorites are If It Bleeds by Stephen King, Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge, The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher, and Gothic by Philip Fracassi. My least favorites (so far) are The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Sentinel by Arthur C. Clarke, and Twelve Nights at Rotter House by J.W. Ocker.
I haven't read "Rebecca" but I had her short story collection from library, including the one "Birds" was based on. I didn't known that Hitchcock acctualy based that film on Du Maurier story too.
Just found this channel and it's been super helpful for scifi/fantasy/thriller recs. Video suggestion after learning of the paleontologist here: Top dinosaur books?
Despite my love of the movie and dinosaurs, I actually struggled with JP due to the character of Lex, so much so that I skipped Lost World. Didn't help that I saw the movie many times over beforehand! @@TheShadesofOrange
I would love a video on dark romance. I might need to read Bluebeard's Castle. I read dark romance, too, and I definitely feel conflicted about the material I am reading. I remember a psychology professor of mine who discussed rape fantasy once. It was kind of awkward, but she wanted to talk about how prevalent it is among women, but she also wanted to clarify what it is and what it is not. I wonder if that is what dark romance is tapping into? A fantasy where a male very much takes the lead in seduction, which in turn makes the woman "faultless" in that scenario. I might be overcomplicating things, Maybe angst is just its own spice. LOL! Anyway, great video!
My spooky reads, had hoped to read a book a week, got off to a delayed start. I had to read the novelization of a movie that told my dad would watch with him after I read the book. They finally got impatient waiting. The book I am reading 'The Ritual' by Adam Nevill is another read I am getting in before watching a movie. It is going slower than I thought but I think I been slowed down because the first half of the book was similar to another recent read. I should finish it today or tomorrow then moving on to a short story collection, Tanith Lee - 'Redder Than Blood'. When I listened to Stephen King and other literary horror podcasts 'Rebecca' has been mentioned quite a bit. Never really thought about it but maybe I should put it on my list. Old school horror has never been my thing but it is important to read the seeds. I forgot about it until you mentioned it.
that's a beautiful edition of rebecca tempted to pick it up just for the artwork even though already know the story anyway got NOS4A2 by joe hill yesterday think u read it a while back if so what is your opinion⚛😀
Some great reads! Although I love the story of Bluebeard (I credit it as my first introduction to horror as a child), I was hesitant to check out this romantic storytelling. After seeing your review though, I think I'll give it a try 😁
Been interested in The Dead Take the A Train since i heard of the release. The waiting time on libby was a bit too long so decided to pick up one of her other books instead for October. 😂 (Walk Among Us)
Richard kadrey’s sandman slim series is ok (it feels a little to try hard with its humor but the plots are pretty cool) i think his most entertaining is “the everything box” its one of the few books of his where the humor works and it doesnt try so hard to be “cool” as his other books.
I might check out Bluebeard's Castle. I've seen a couple of films that are interesting feminist takes on Bluebeard... and I'm always hoping to find dark romance I like, but am often disappointed that the book turns out to just be the romanticization of abuse.
I think we may have similar tastes but I wish you can just talk about books you actually like 😅 it seems like you bring up a lot of books that you dont care for.
Aw these are always recaps of my reading weeks so it just depends how good I was at selecting the right books. But my "best of the year" content is coming soon so you'll get lists of all my recent favs
love the video! currently reading bunker dogs by gage greenwood then planning to read they never learn and halloween slaughter in the week leading up to halloween🎃🪱👽

Oh thank you! Sorry about your tbr!
Currently reading The Graveyard Shift and enjoying it! Looking forward to your upcoming videos🎃🗡️✨
So glad you're enjoying it!
Wow! So many books went on my TBR, thanks a lot for this video!
Currently reading Mister Magic, i am enjoying it. Some good books here to add to my home library!

Oh yes Lovecraft is a good choice for classic Halloween reading

I really do need to read Rebecca! The Palaeontologist looks fun and Bluebeard’s Castle sounds very interesting
I saw your reviews! Thats why I love multiple reviewers. You had a different reaction than I did
I’ve been seeing a lot of mixed reviews on Silent Key, which worries me. I loved everything I’ve read by Hightower’s so far. Great reading!
I hope it works better for you

I've heard great things about that other book you mentioned
Hey are you saying that I am old as I was born in the seventies 😂😂😂
😅
@@TheShadesofOrange you didn’t answer my question lol 😂
I absolutely loved Hex, and I read it after you recommended it, most probably 😅
Absolutely love Rebecca. Just read it for the first time this summer and it turned out to be one of my favorite books of all time. ❤
Such a good one!
Great video and I'm super excited for your Halloween content! 🎃🎃🎃
I read Rebecca recently too . I loved it !! Been on a classics kick since !
Such a good one!!
Ohh I want The Paleontologist for those illustrations alone...

Stir of Echoes by Richard Matheson is one of my favorite modern classic horror books 3:51
I'll have to look that one up
Great video. I haven't tried any dark romance books but i am open to different genres. 🎃
Excellent 😄
thanks, Rachel! I love your videos. 😄

❤great recs will definitely be checking out the paleontologist by Luke Dumas on Halloween
I hope you enjoy it

@@TheShadesofOrange great idea!
I have Rebecca and hope to read this season. Was going to read Mexican Gothic after that.. think I may have heard comparisons?
Same here.
There's definitely some inspiration taken from Rebecca
From what I've read so far this October, my favorites are If It Bleeds by Stephen King, Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge, The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher, and Gothic by Philip Fracassi. I'm about to finish In the Miso Soup by Ryu Murakami (you know, the OTHER Murakami) its splattery but surprisingly thoughtful. So far so good.
