    I really want to thank you both for sharing all those valueable information, you really influenced my personal way of coaching basketball and your blog, podcasts and videos helped me alot to better understand how (motor) learning works and how i can use constraint led approach (CLA), games based approach and small sided games to shape, modify and manipulate the process of learning.
    My athletes (12-14 year old) love the coaching style, not just because playing against defenders (scripted/guided/live) helps them to understand the importance and deep connection of perception, decisions and skill application, which ultimatly helps them in the long run to better retain informations, which then transfers to the actual game but also because it provides challenges for them & and stimulates their own thinking to solve problems and actual find solutions by themself. Also they better understand the value of mistakes and how they are such an important part of the learning process.
    And last but not least, this approach of coaching is way more fun as the traditional skill based approach for all of us. Plus as a coach you actually feel more like an environmental architect to create and build up habits you want to emphasize and encourage and build up a framework and basic structure of concepts and principles to give guidance to the chaotic, unpredicatable nature of the game - that's just terrific.

      I don't know how confident I am letting players just figure out how to shoot.

      @@benmurf207 I would recommend you "Differential Learning" as a base for players to understand and feel for themself how different bodyparts interact with each other but still gives the freedom to explore what works for the individual themself.
      By nature you create boundarys by setting up differnt DL conditions (like different foot positions to shoot from: ie. wide, stagger, narrow, parallel, 1-foot, etc.) with the ultimate goal to hit BRADs (which is a constraint for itself) = back rim and down or swish. There are hundreds of possibilities to create different DL conditions: shooting pocket, standing foot, ball (large, small, heavy, light, other sport balls), shooting arc/direction, hand positioning, movement velocity, eyes, distance/angles, standing positions, movement (ie. vertical, lateral, multi-directional, etc.) and so on.
      And for random & variable dynamic shooting i would recommend "Trigger Shooting" with guided and/or live defense, you basicly start with any trigger (DHO, PnR, Get Action/Handoff, Ghost Screen, Re-Screens/Twists, of Cuts, of Push/Pull Actions, of any Off-Ball Screen (Pindown, Flare, Cross, Back-Screen, etc.) or any game-like scenario you can imagine/run in your offense.
      You still can incoperate and use some traditional 1x0 spot up shooting drills (but i personally would add some variety to it, by changing some constraints, ie. you can't shoot the same shot twice, must be a different shot every rep, ie. catch & shoot, 1-dribble pullup, 2-dribble change of direction pullup, stepback/sidestep, drag/stop move, etc.) for some confidence or for some low days but it's important to understand how the actual game is played and which affordances occur and there is a LOT of perception and action coupling involved and players need to learn to adept based on what they perceive and other (individual) constraints, which is impossible to learn without game representitive defense.

    Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but to say there are a lot of solutions to shooting is only accurate to a point. Shouldn't we be giving players some basics that they can adapt.
    I'm thinking of things like keeping middle of the hand on middle of the ball. Etc

      Thanks for your comment. Shooting has commonalities but is very specific to individual biomechanical and anatomical differences so there is no cookie cutter method but we do agree with a framework ie. as discussed my daughter shooting within her body with no hip or shoulder turn. I do think some traditional fundamentals like hand in the middle of the ball can be developed within a player led approach.

    In regards to offense, I think coaches run sets and continuity because they're trying to carry
    Create predictable situations for their team, with the idea that the offense will recognize the defensive tactic and adjust.

      Yes we agree with structure to unstructured and we are away that winning trumps development, and should, at a lot of levels. The BDT Offense is focused on player and team development within a conceptual framework but we are aware it is easier and necessary to focus on specific matchups at levels where winning matters.

      @@BasketballImmersion At what age / level would you say winning matters? Alex works at a high level but still focuses on this. I wish more coaches had that luxury, where you could do this in an environment that ALSO focuses on winning. You would need some verrrrry patient and supportive admin., I would think.

      @College Prep all I know is I have run continuity offense and used constraints based small sided games to teach it, so to say that they can't work together isn't accurate
