A few chapters in after the anime ends, you learn that all the inhabited continents are in a lake surrounded by the "dark continent." the reason that people don't go there is because there are certain horrors that inhabit the dark continent and a few have been brought back. the one we are most familiar with is named Ai. Ai is Nanika/alluka.

well, for those wondering why Ging is such a bad dad to Gon is that Gon is not really his own son, there is a theory that Gon came from the dark continent since even Mito said that the dates of Ging leaving and Gon's age didnt match up. Furthermore, we can see Ging's keen interest on his predecessor, Don Freecs, so there was a theory going around that Gon is the direct offspring of Don Freecs, which makes him much older than Ging.
it's more likely that he has nen restrictions regarding his own son and that is why he is so strong in the first place, that and his goal of wanting what is beyond what he can see is why he treats Gon like that.

@@chrissquid cause i like the theory of nen and using internal energy to fight battles. Thats what got me to watch the show initially. But from what I've read in the manga... they've simplified it. They don't even talk about the larger world and making any potential expeditions into it. Now you also say Gon doesn't have Nen, I haven't seen the show in a while so I'm not exactly sure what was said. But didn't he get healed by Alluka/Something. I was under the impression that he was completely healed then. But I could be wrong

Nen is still just as complex and interesting as it has always been and the literal current arc of the manga is them on their way to the dark continent
