Bobbie Gentry's single of Fancy was actually released in late Oct. 1969. It spent four months on the pop hot 100 and sold a million copies for Bobbie. She earned both a grammy nomination for top female vocal and an A.C.M nomination( her third in a row) for top country female. Reba helped make the song iconic. She has sold over 700,000 paid downloads of the classic hit and put the song on albums totaling over 20 million in album sales. The funniest story I ever heard about Reba's classic cover had to do with the launching of her world tour in the early 90's. Potato chip giant, Frito Lay, was sponsoring the tour and wanted to license the song rights of Fancy to do a commercial. One major road block: Songwriter Bobbie Gentry was having none of it. She told friends" no song of mine is going to be used to sell corn chips" . She rebuffed the 50 k offer to license the song. Frito Lay kept up the pressure and an exasperated Gentry informed her rep to demand 1 million dollars in a take it or leave it offer figuring that would be the end of it. She was stunned when Frito Lay called her bluff and paid the million! Bobbie Gentry has earned an estimated 3 million dollars off the Reba cover alone.
She tells the story differently about TNTTLWOIN than Vicky Lawrence does. Vicky's husband wrote the song, but hated it. Though Vicky loved it, and she recorded the demo herself without him. It was sent to several stars, who rejected it. So Vicky recorded it herself professionally.
Her smile is so genuine

It isn’t Rena’s song. The song was CC written by Bobbie Gentry.
