She travels from Chicago to...The City of New Orleans. The first time I rode a train as an adult, in 2015, I cried when I felt the wheels rumbling beneath the floor. It beats the heck out of flying.

Great song, while I love Willie's rendition, I grew up on Arlo's and It is hard for me to put Willie's over it. That being said the harmonica playing of the great Terry McMillan combined with Willie's voice and guitar does give this one it's own unique feel. Written an first recorded by John Prine's good friend Steve Goodman. I would say it is probably the most famous train song ever. Although I am sure both "The Wabash Cannonball" and "The Wreck of the Old 97" would have to be included in that conversation. Thanks for a tremendous request Montauk Ed and a fantastic reaction Don.---#UTRCM

My favorite Willie song! Amtrak is actually reintroducing the train route this year. I’m located in southern Mississippi so soon I’ll be able to take it to New Orleans🙂

I don't know if I have ever heard Willie's version of this. Thanks Don and Ed. I have finally started to listen to Willie's band in earnest, and they are great. His harmonica player has always stood out, but I'm paying more attention to everyone else, too.

Love this song and Willie, but there's another Willie I like better when It comes to train songs! Boxcar Willie! Wabash Cannonball is one of his iconic songs! I'd love to hear your review of this song!

Boxcar Willie makes the sound of trains with his own voice/mouth! Unbelievably accurate!

Steve Goodman wrote it along with the "Perfect Country Song" (You Never Even Called Me By My Name).

Thanks so much Montauk Ed for this super request. This is a very special song to me. I saw Steve Goodman in concert back in the early 70s when this song was a big hit, and I've been fascinated by all the other versions that have been done. I couldn't pick a favourite, I think they're all tremendous. I'm also a train junkie (I worked for Canadian Pacific Railway for a few decades), and for some reason I've always really liked train songs. Thanks for the great reaction Don, and the really good rating!

Trigger is a Martin N-20 classical guitar so strings are nylon. The guitar is modified with a pickup & amplifier installed.

I've always thought Willie did a great job on this classic.

I think Willie could stand there and sing the Alphabet song acapella, and I'd sit slack-jawed with wonder and entertainment. Also, Mickey Raphael on that sweet harmonica is almost as recognizable as Willie's Trigger in Willie's music. Trigger has nylon strings, by the way, and the hole worn into the guitar body is because it's a classical acoustic guitar, not meant to be played with a pick, so there's no pick guard on the lower body of the instrument to protect the wood, as there would on a different style acoustic guitar.

Thanks for the information I wrongly credited Terry McMillan in stead of Mickey. What a brain cramp!!! ---#UTRCM

For all fans of this terrific song --- check the new version by Rhonda Vincent. It's incredible, and check out the music video that features her grandson - it's brilliant!

I’ve always preferred this version better. Willie did a great job. You Don would be interested in the story as to how that song got written.

Can't go wrong with Willie. He's a bast in concert. Willie uses Nylon strings. Here is a fun tidbit, Bri sang with Willie

The other day you reacted to another song by Willie and a lot of the comments were about his guitar picking. I think Willie is great, so there is nothing new to say about his talent. As with this song and the other one you did, what stands out in those songs and all of Willie's music, to me, is Mickey Raphael and his harmonica. Willie's music wouldn't be the same without Mickey and Trigger.

Thank you for correcting my misinformation. While Terry McMillan is a wonderful harmonica player, what a brain cramp to credit him instead of The great Mickey Raphael as Willie's long time harmonica player. Thanks again for the correction.---#UTRCM
