      Are you “elect” (in the calvinist sense of chosen before the foundation of the world)?

    • @jedimasterham2
      @jedimasterham2 Год назад +2

      I think one of the easiest ways to look at the “elect” or “appointed is this.
      Calvinists posit that God predestines individuals to a group called the elect. This is wrong.
      The Bible seems to indicate that God predetermines a group called the elect, to which any person can join if they repent and believe.
      Furthermore, predestined also has a meaning, such as to plan a destination in advance. I think God’s word here likely means that every person upon being saved is then predestined to redemption at the end. Belief is just the qualifying condition for one to be part of the chosen or appointed.

    I was sitting in Dr. Vernon Purdy’s Intro to Theology class in 1997 at Central Bible College, listening to perhaps my favorite theologian as he lectured on the “error” of Calvinistic doctrine. Out of the blue, the thought occurred to me that these two seemingly incompatible views might be merely two different perspectives on salvation. From God’s perspective, our names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life from the foundation of the world. But from our perspective, we must work out our own salvation with fear and trembling. I have never heard anyone iterate that concept until this video. Maybe I’m not so crazy after all! Thank you for your videos!

    • @mt8149
      @mt8149 5 лет назад +12

      Another perspective of working out your salvation is: because you are saved, do good works with fear and trembling. These are works that God has set up for us to do (Ephesians 2:10 for example) and we do them out of both duty and gratitude. We are essentially "working out our salvation" because we are saved to do these good works and glorify God.

      Is it just me or does it make perfect sense? I’m not well spoken but I understand the predestination and election. God knows who will believe on Jesus Christ and who would not. He died for all. His blood is enough to atone for everyone. But in one of those verses, it points out repentance. Many people don’t repent and some do and don’t truly want Jesus to pay for it. In horror we hear of people who want to die for their sins in an act of ignorant pride to say their sins are greater than the blood of Christ. God should know who will be saved or not - that’s disconcerting if the One who authored this world doesn’t know who are His and aren’t 🥴 sometimes we run too far with doctrines and get away from scripture. Let scripture say what it says and the Holy Spirit will teach context and exposition. It really makes sense without all the big fancy words. God sees the heart and will make new creatures of His own. Through any other manner is not of the Lord and therefore not saved. May we all really analyze whether we be in the faith or not

    • @Adam-ue2ig
      @Adam-ue2ig 3 года назад +5

      Work out your salvation with fear and trembling is a phrase...the rest of the verse says FOR IT IS GOD WORKING IN YOU BOTH TO WILL AND TO WORK FOR HIS GOOD PLEASURE.

      While we all have impulsive "thought crimes", God knows our heart. My advice on this would be to not dwell on the thought. However if you have faith in Jesus, as I've said before, you're forgiven.
      If you gave your whole life to Christ and sin right before you die unexpectedly, with no time to confess, do you really think God is going to condemn you? Of course not, if you have faith in Christ God "...forgave us all our sins"(Colossians 2:13). This includes past, present, and future.
      You're salvation depends on what Jesus did.

    God presented the gift of eternal life through the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is us who either except or reject the gift .

    • @preciadocr1ss
      @preciadocr1ss 4 года назад +5

      Our free will is corrupted, that is why we need a savior , the Bible states the no one is good, Jesus said that nobody comes to him unless is been brought by the father. The father chooses, we are been given to Jesus by the father, he awakens us to Jesus through his Holy Spirit, and through his word, the Bible, only the Holy Spirit given by God , give us faith, and shows us how sinners we are, he convicts us of sin , he is our helper, and takes us to Jesus! Is by Faith, and Faith is a gift of God!! Everything is by grace, and given!!! So nobody glorify them selves!!

    Everything that happens in history has been decreed/Predestined before the world was created see Eph 1:11, Proverbs 16:33 and Amos 3:6. And yes even when terrible things happen, I know it's hard for some people to accept but look what happened when David sinned against God and one of Davids punishments was that God told him that he was going to use Davids own son to shame his Father by Absalom Absalom doing something immoral to his Fathers concubines in front of all of Israel, see 2 Samuel 12:11-12 God said "Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun." Notice how God said "I WILL DO THIS THING."That was fulfilled in 2 Samuel 16:21-22. Jesus did not die for every single person ever and Jesus didn't die to make people savable. He died to save his elect. In John 17:9 Jesus said that he does not pray for the world. The word world is used in different contexts, in that context he's talking about the non elect. In John 3:16 world means that he purchased people from every tribe, tongue and nation Rev 5:9 and for the children of God scattered abroad John 11:52. Some have been "long beforehand marked out for condemnation" Jude 4 and "appointed to doom." 1 Peter 2:8. About Pharaoh God said “For this VERY PURPOSE I raised you up, to demonstrate My power in you, and that My name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth.” So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires." Rom 9:17-18. Jesus said "I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." Matthew 11:25-27. So, 2 Pet 3:9 the "not willing that any should perish" if you read that letter in context, 2 Pet 1:1 says "To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours." As far as salvation for all men verses, Paul was refuting the false notion of his time that God was only desiring to save just the Jews and 1 Tim 2:2 says to pray "for kings and all who are in authority" because as humans WE DON'T KNOW WHO THE ELECT ARE SO WE PRAY FOR EVERYONE! That's what it means in verse 4 by saying "all men." Amos 3:2 God said "of all the nations of the earth I have only known you." For centuries God passed over the majority of humankind because this verse isn't about knowledge it's about relationship. And it isn't because God foresaw Israel was more righteous then the other nations because sometimes Israel was more sinful then the pagan nations see 2 Kings 21:9. Only those who were predestined to be saved will be see Acts 13:48, Ephesians 1:4-5, Eph 1:11, Romans 9:11-23, John 6:37.

    Many people in the church today are clueless and in a state of great confusion regarding what true Biblical predestination is and because of Calvinism's great influence in the churches, they will fall back on Calvinism's twisted definition that has been forcefully imposed into many seminaries, Bible colleges, theology textbooks, dictionaries, churches, and church constitutions for centuries.
    True Biblical predestination takes place AFTER a person comes to faith in Christ. The Christian is predestinated for 3 things which takes place in the future. True Biblical predestination ONLY applies to those that are saved.
    1) They are predestinated to be CONFORMED TO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST - Romans 8:29-30, 1 Corinthians 15:49 - And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. Philippians 3:21 - Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. All saved people will be like Christ. We shall be like Him - 1 John 3:2. This is a future aspect at the Rapture.
    2) They are predestinated to have an INHERITANCE in heaven - Ephesians 1:11, John 14:2-4. Again, this is a future aspect.
    3) They are predestinated to have GLORIFIED ETERNAL BODIES OF FLESH AND BONE, the REDEMPTION OF OUR PHYSICAL BODIES just like Jesus resurrected body described in Luke 24:39, Ephesians 1:4-5, Romans 8:23, Christ's newly resurrected glorified body is the prototype of what is to come for all saved Christians at the RAPTURE - 1 Corinthians 15:51-54, 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17, 1 John 3:2.
    There is a world of difference between true Biblical predestination and election versus Calvinist "predestination" and "election." Calvinism will use the terms "predestination" and "election" interchangeably to mean the same thing, that is, salvation or damnation which is predetermined in eternity past by God.
    Calvinism has hijacked the words, "chose", "chosen", "elect", "election" and "predestinate" and perverted the true definition. The true definition is NOT "chose", "chosen", "elect", "election" for salvation.

    Great teacher!!! However, the "L" which is limited atonement is a not a vague doctrine that we should set aside because it was not clearly stated in the bible. John 10:11 and 15 are so explicit that no one needs commentary to interpret these verses. John 10:11 states “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd LAYS DOWN HIS LIFE FOR THE SHEEP." John 10:14-15 is also clear on who Christ died for... "I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep." Lastly, God so loved that He gave His life. The question is, who did He give it to? Was it everyone? John 15:15 states, "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." The limited atonement doctrine with the rest of the "Doctrines of Grace" humbles me in the sight of God knowing that God was not obliged to save me and yet even before time began, He already has loved me and set this everlasting love on me and not bypassed me. As Jeremiah 31:3 reads... "I have loved thee with an everlasting love. therefore with my lovingkindness I have drawn you to me."

    Chuck Missler once said, the controversy with predestination comes from a misunderstanding of God's relationship to time. Many people think that God is someone with unlimited amounts of time. Not so, for God is someone outside of time. Time is his creation and, to him past, present, & future are all one.

    For me the limited atonement is clearly explain here: rev.5.9 And they sang a new song, saying,
    “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals,
    for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
    from every tribe and language and people and nation,

    • @michelhaineault6654
      @michelhaineault6654 6 лет назад +3

      The sovereign priest was not making the atonement once a year for the sins of all the world but for the sins of God peoples only (as Jesus)
      When the bible say " God so love the world" it's because before Jesus Redemption was only for Israel but after the cross it was for all the elects from all nations of the world including the Jews. So the word WORLD it's to make the new distinction of the new covenant that the wall of separation is broken between the Jews and the nations NOW.

For a big chunk of my life I would not have wanted to deal with a passage like this. And I admit i'm still trying to understand and I know we have to balance it with the whole of scripture. This is one of those hot button issues and that is why we need to handle it with respect with our brothers and sisters.

    • @lindajohnson4204

      And you guys always leave out "IN HIM", as if it was minor and meaningless. And because you have an a priori commitment to monergism, you ignore every scripture that negates monergism, that won't allow it to be true, which results in denying quite a few direct statements, but denying thousands more scriptures that show through implication that monergism cannot be true. If God would have us all be saved--His word says it is true--then He sincerely would have us all be saved. Hopefully, you would agree that it is both God's nature to be truthful, and that He has committed Himself to be truthful in His word--He could not possibly say sure, He would have all men be saved, IF you subtract the fact that He has predestined just a scant handful to be saved, and has also hopelessly predestinated most people not to be able to be saved (this, "for His good pleasure"), although He is going to punish them eternally for not getting saved, as if it was their idea, not His, to never be able to believe. How, then, could the Father; Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life; and the Holy Spirit of truth claim that God would have all men be saved, IF He is the unmoveable, and only, real reason that they won't be saved? Before the gnostic Augustine taught this, nobody read that into the verses on predestination, which were always about God predestinating particular things, NOT everything that ever happens, a pagan idea (the "merciless Fates"), not a Biblical one. Augustine was a slick, philosophical thinker, but not a godly Bible interpreter. In fact, he brought "Christians" murdering simple, Bible-believing Christians, into Christendom, and wrote the book that defended Church persecution _(City of God)._ Jesus had warned us that people would come along who would persecute and even kill us, and "this will they do, because they have not known the Father, nor me". If someone, through doing what the Bible condemns, and not repenting, shows that he _has not known_ the Father, nor Jesus, should we allow him to interpret the Bible for us? That unrepentant man would be someone we should never trust to guide us to understand the Bible. And yet, because of his intellectual reputation, and his being ensconced in power, very few evangelicals, even, can tear themselves away from his doctrines, taking them as nothing but _improved_ versions of Bible doctrines. And all of this extreme predestination and monergism is built on this supplanting of Biblical truth, with the glamour and spurious authority of Augustinian philosophy. We were warned not to let "philosophy and _vain deceit"_ rob us of our faith--the precious, trusting faith that the babes have in Jesus. Without the extreme demands of monergism, a God who says "come, let us reason together," could draw us as John 6 and John 12 say, to believe that our sins, though they are scarlet, shall be white as wool--yet further drawing would depend on our response to the light. Monergism condemns that, but the Bible teaches it: it is them who receive the light that has come into the world who are given the right to become the children of God. (John 1). To them who have, more will be given, but to them who have not, even that which they HAVE will be taken from them (that man HAD, but buried what he had, _calling_ it nothing). The condemnation is that light has come into the world, and MEN preferred darkness to light, because their deeds are evil (John 3). All of us have sinned and are sinners, but there are those who finally "do truth" (John 3), who turn to Him. Without the drawing of the Holy Spirit, this would not be possible, but with Him, all things are possible. Monergism condemns belief without being irresistibly regenerated beforehand, including obedience to the conviction of the Holy Spirit, calling salvation by grace _through faith_ a "works" salvation, if the one who believes makes any choices at all. But the Bible does not call faith a work. It never does; it contrasts faith and works. They are not the same thing.

    Honestly 2 Peter 3:9 gives everyone hope. We should hope for all to come to repentance. God doesn't want anyone to perish. This reminds me a bit of ‭‭Romans‬ ‭2:4‬ ‭NIV‬‬
    "Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?" So I think it's clear what the will of God is. God's mercy is demonstrated by his patience is it not? Of course, there are many times where it seems as if other verses say the opposite, or at least imply the opposite. It's not possible to hold opposing views at the same time.

    John 12:32 "And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." In the seed and sower parable, the seed is spread everywhere, not just in certain spots, but it's only the seeds that fall on the good soil that make it. Meaning Jesus draws everyone to him, but not everyone accepts him. Romans 8:29: "For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters" God foreknew who would be conformed, therefore he predestined them. I think you are adding different meaning to scripture when you say it means "all kinds of people," which we must be careful not to do. And on what basis does God choose His elect? The bible teaches that salvation is a free gift from God, but never says that faith is a free gift from God. Jesus does not fail to save those who have believed in him.

      "Then Christ does seem to fail to save those He died for..." wow!
      The failure of that reasoning is that the value of a gift is determined and fixed by the price the PURCHASER/ GIVER is willing to pay before the addressee even knows a gift is en route or has received or rejected it.
      If my mom buys me a ferarri leaves the keys in the ignition and I refuse to RECEIVE the gift .. the value of the gift remains the same because it is a fixed value paid by the PURCHASER before it is given.... she can not fail at giving the gift nor is the value of the gift diminished or rendered a failure because I refused to receive it. I don't know any people who assign the value (success or failure) of a gift or the Giver to be determined by the ungrateful idiot who refused to actively receive it. And since Paul uses the words GIFT and RECEIVE.. (2Thes2:10, Rom 5:11, Rom 5:17 etc etc) we might want to take him seriously and not blaspheme the Lord Jesus Christ.

      @Maryam Maghen The pardon is not forced upon them. Of course almost everyone accepts it...but they do not have to. Such in the case of United States vs Wilson. 1833. Supreme court ruled in favor of Wilson who refused the pardon. So you see, in reality my analogy does work. Prisoners ARE given the option. Anything else you like to nitpick at lady??

    • @strohdog242
      @strohdog242 5 лет назад

      @Maryam Maghen Then I certainly do not understand the original point you are making. It is almost like you believe no one who has ever lived will ever go to hell...and that is not true. You accept the pardon by accepting Jesus as savior thereby releasing you from death (hell). Or you do not accept Jesus as Lord and refusing the pardon, thereby facing the consequences of that refusal which is death (hell).
      That was my original point. I was on target. You said I was wrong about the pardon. If I refuse the pardon then I accept the consequences. I ONLY am granted freedom if I willfully accept the pardon. The Bible is crystal clear about this. I do not understand why you could possibly say otherwise.
