‘Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light’
18 March - 7 July 2019
The first UK exhibition of Spain's Impressionist, Sorolla, in over a century.
Known as the 'master of light' for his iridescent canvases, this is a rare opportunity to see the most complete exhibition of Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida's (1863-1923) paintings outside Spain.
From the vivid seascapes, garden views, and bather scenes for which he is most renowned, to portraits, landscapes and genre scenes of Spanish life, the exhibition features 60 works spanning Sorolla's career - many of which are travelling from private collections and from afar.

Sorolla was certainly the Master of Light . His paintings are a revelation ,a spectacular wonder to see and ponder over.Thank you National Gallery.
He captured me the moment I saw a book at my Art School Library of his paintings in 1965. I did visit his home/museum in Madrid 5 yrs ago.Thank you for a most excellent talk.
By far one of my favorite painters of the old masters
Now in lockdown no. 3, having visited the exhibition in 2018, it is wonderful to revisit it by means of this wonderful presentation by Chris Riopelle
Sorolla is defintely a favorite of mine too. Truly deserves to be a household name.
On a recent trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Sorolla's massive "Before the Bullfight" painting (98" x 146") was located where previously a few medium-sized Sargent paintings had been. Having never heard of Sorolla, this enveloping painting led me to learn more about this incredible painter. I love his dedication to capturing his subjects from life and using many sketches to complete his large works, a great lecture given here, Thank you!
I love Sorolla. I lived in Valencia and I know well the light he portrays in his canvases. Congratulations on the excellent research and the beautiful tribute to this great painter!
(I started watching the video, and I thought about leaving it because of the "cough" that makes anyone uncomfortable and distracts from watching it, but fortunately, with the subtitles, it was possible to overcome that.)
Long live Sorrolla, long live Valencia and its powerful white light! Viva España!
I think I'm drawn to Sorolla because of exactly what was highlighted here: brilliant use of light and the modern snapshot sensibility.
Museo Sorolla at the top of my list of places to visit on my next trip to Madrid! Thank you for a wonderful presentation.
Thanks to the NG for bringing these wonderful lecturers. Great for everyone who cannot be there in person. I have always loved this artists work.
So happy to have discovered these lectures online. I am a member as well and visit as often as possible.
I agree, I am so happy to be able to watch and learn from these lectures.
Amazing video. Thanks to National Gallery for this wonderful presentation!
Great painter. Sargent sent me to Sorolla.
The guy needs a Hall's mentalyptus lozenge. I just got the Sorolla book curated by his great-granddaughter for Christmas. It's amazing to see high resolution large prints of his art. So inspiring
@19:00, what a gorgeous symphony of blacks and grays and then the beautifully illuminated face captures the eye. Masterful effect.
Great day to begin an exhibition about a Valentian (and Spanish) painter: Saint Joseph's eve!
Saint Cyril`s day!
Thank you Chris and the NG. Visiting the exhibition tomorrow and very much looking forward to it.
Thanks for uploading this masterclass
Magnificant! Thank you for sharing this lecture with us.
Fascinating talk, thank you very much
I love this artist. He loved Javea and it's pinky mother-of-pearl evening light. The light here in Comunidad Valenciana is pink some evenings. The LIGHT itself. People don't believe it until they see it.
Good lecture. Thanks
Never realized how similiarily Sorolla and John Singer Sargent painted.
41:51 for fun, behind the women on right is a large portrait of a lady on the ground. Woman's shadow makes up the right of her face, then eye is to the right of her hand and the head covered with a cloth is the rest. As curator would say, it snaps into place once you realize it's there.
An interesting talk.
Hand him a pack of Halls sugar-free cough drops. They work!!!
😂😂😂
drink some water
Great exhibition.
Wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks
Superbly well done. Such loneliness in thy pain-ts.
Fascinating. A great eye and no storm and drang. Populist in a good way. The technique is obviously great.
Can anyone tell me what is the painter he refers to around 14'20'' when talking about the whites?
James Abbott McNeill Whistler
@@johnAsanz oh, thanks a lot!
I can't believe someone didn't get him water. He's doing good under the circumstances.
👏👏👏😍
The Roncal costumes of northern Navarra are worn for special occasions.
Robitussun cough syrup should have been in your pocket mr curator.
Robo-tripping at the art conference haha
🌷🌷🌷❤
simbody give him a cough drop x.x
I made it 10 minutes in before I had to mute the video x.x
Another wonderful presentation. Thank you
Lovely talk. One minor quibble: menina is a maid of honor, not a princess.
Call
21:40 Can Clotilde's waiste really be so tiny?
The curator reminds me of Flea from RHCP
The coughing spoiled it for me. Couldn’t get far through it, unfortunately.
Me neither 😞 quit after 10 mins

Missed a very good lecture.
please learn how to pronounce Joaquin properly and Ibiza for your lectures, which are fabulous.
Please do learn the right pronunciation of Sorolla.
Drink water……..
It would be a much greater pleasure if this presentation was not accompanied by frequent coughing and drinking!
" he can take on velazquez" LOL
