One of the key factors in Singapore's ability to overcome its seemingly poor geographical location to become an economic success story is its housing policy. This small city-state is so insanely well-designed, even bigger cities such as New York pale in comparison. So how did this come to be?

Our beloved Nation father LKY brought us through poverty to prosperity. We miss him and we forever felt indebted to him for generations and generations. He truly love the people of Singapore and devoted his entire life to the well being of the nation.
Singapore is indeed fortunate to have a visionary leader like Mr Lee Kuan Yew!
As a foreigner, I can only say Singapore was so blessed to have lky. But hope the present administration can carry on his legacy
He is godly, and don't worry about him now cos he is in a godly realm for what he had done
I'm a foreigner who has witnessed the brilliance and genius of lee kuan yew since the 70s. Because of him, Singapore has truly the best public housing in the world, the best mass rapid transport in the world (China catching up), safest country in the world, most business friendly regulations in the world....
In contrast the Malays, their religion and claim of racial supremacy have destroyed all potential their country had.
This is the kind of things every country should strive to achieve and compete in, not pointless things like war.
Dare I say, when it comes to public housing infrastructure, Singapore is number 1. Yes, it has its flaws (criticism) but I have yet to see any country that can do better.
im in Singapore every 1-2 months, still every time i land i feel a sense of gratefulness, it really is a beautiful place.
Love the place too!
The author knows more about our own housing than many Singaporeans do , if only more Singaporeans know about our own country 's developments , then they can better appreciate the difficult jobs done by the government

Imagine visiting a city such as this. Downtown, it was devoid of maddening crowds jostling for space on the sidewalks. Foremost on your mind (based on your past experiences) :
1. Will I bump into a stranger while admiring the sights.
2. Will I experience beggars, petty thieves or conmen out for a quick buck.
3. Will I experience street corner gangs catcalling at passersby.
4. Will I safely return to my hotel room.
Results :
1. My perspectives as I can survey the surroundings and not loose my bearings.
2. Where the heck are the locals?
3. I can breathe as I can smell the flowers at a distance.
4. My ear drums vibrate to the sounds of birds and a passing eagle.
5. I can hear the hum of passing vehicles, but why are the cars not honking.
6. Reminds myself, I am here for the food.
Singapore is cool man.
Where the heck are the locals? - Well we avoid the touristy areas and stay in our neighbourhoods, which are way cheaper and sometimes even look better than the city areas.

As usual, some S'poreans are NEVER satisfied & complain. Go try housing in other countries. All details & commentaries in this video are truthful and accurate.
Even if we "own" a million dollar public house, we are considered poor because my partner says only the poor lives in public housing. Our neighbours from another country like to mock us that despite earning way more than them, we are a bunch of poor people. An average Singaporean is unlikely to be able to afford a car and a big enough house, whereas an average Malaysian is likely be able to afford a car and a decent sized house.
@@zzy341 if they are so satisfied, why do they need to come over to work. What they have are land and resources yet they cannot afford to give their own people decent salary to retain their own people. We may be poor according to them, but their homes have not much value, lesser than our hdb flats. Let them enjoy their riches and stay there.
@@zzy341 you are feeling bad because a bunch of jealous people tried to mock you. people like that will always find way to drag other down.
They lost their houses with yards every year due to floods, and if rebuilt or renovated, will only subject to the same the very next year. Rinse and repeat. No one in the sane mind would want to live there. And what kind of insane money do you need to rebuild a home year after year
@@zzy341 your partner says only the poor live in HDB? Don't you know plenty of rich Singaporeans live in HDB? Break up with your partner fast. He/she is materialistic, you would suffer if you stay in that relationship any longer.
Singapore has come a long way in public housing development. The old military type housing blocks with common corridors (gallery flats) are out. The new HDBs now look like private condominiums. No more common corridors to enter your flat. Instead each floor houses 5-7 units. The resale value of HDBs have also gone up a lot making owning a public housing flat very attractive from an investment standpoint.
Good investment for existing homeowners but a burden to prospective buyers.
I’m very amaze how well-kept the HDB are. Even the so called Condo in Jakarta is not as well kept as HDB, let alone our Public Housing.
That’s probably because HDB repaint the exterior walls of housing blocks every 5 years, is paid for by the town council, from a small conservancy fee the residents pay every month.
I never expect a foreign youtube to highlight singapore public housing in manner that impressive. Yes. I am a singaporean waiting for my flat completion at Tengah Estate.
Thanks for the compliment! All the best with your new flat!
I rather live in public housing in Spore as it offers convenient, amenities, bigger flat sizes especially the older ones and very much cheaper in everything.
Its all about the resale of older flats and that these flats are so close to city most visited places by local and tourists with very good transport in Singapore
That is true. We lived in a landed property where amenities are far, long walk to get to the main roads and there are no shelters along the way. In the end we purchased a HDB with our CPF and now live in a 4 room flat. Life is such a bliss ~
Another point to add on. In order to prepare for home ownership scheme (and other purposes like medical & retirement funds), every working citizens and Permanent residents will need to contribute to their own funding (called the CPF Central Provider Fund) which deduct a mandatory 20% from their monthly pay, and match with another 17% contribution from their employer. This 37% (of each month pay) will then be stored and accumulated, till the time of needs for property purchase, medications, retirement or investment. With CPF, most adults especially couples will be readied to pay for their homes, instead of needing to rent them.
Thanks for sharing!
Would I like to live in such public housing?
Well, since it's the only type of housing I can reasonably afford to live in, I guess my answer would be an enthusiastic YES!!! (I'm singaporean and currently live in a 5-room HDB)
I appreciate my country Singapore :) blessed to be born here instead of anywhere else. Maybe being born Japanese is comparable but have to suffer risk of natural disasters.

If you can afford a car
@@tankman20064 I have a car, but quite frankly there is no need when public transport is vast/very efficient/clean/so nice. When transport system is so damn good, having a car is a luxury not a necessity, and this is true in Singapore. A car needs maintenance, depreciates the second you get it hence you’ve lost money from Day 1. SG’s very well-planned/made/managed/maintained transport/housing/health services/etc gives Singaporeans a lot of value for their money and health = this value appreciates for one’s savings and life over time, unlike a car which not only depreciates but is also very temporary.

@World Know More: why did you hide me in your other video "Why Singapore’s Public Housing Is So Insanely Well-Designed"?
Lee Kuan Yew... the one and Prime Minister of Singapore... Ong Teng Cheong... One and only President of Singapore
Lets all be honest, Singapore was able to prosper because they were lucky enough to have a wise leader(s). On the other hand, NYC probably will never elect a wise leader to lead the city to prosper in this day and age.
Meritocracy to be exact.
Not built on empty promises, blaming religions or races and high corruption . Do listen to the national anthem created.
Please come overseas to developed countries n see lots of homeless in cities,or those priced out of rentals living in their cars! Do not complain when you have a roof over your head.
The negatives will always find something negative to complain. While the positive will always look on the brighter side of Singapore. It all depends on which force resides in you, negative or positive.
Anyway, Singapore is not paradise. But for me, it’s the closest I can get. In terms of economy, Singapore is heaven. In terms of living, Singapore is known to be boring and too urban. BUt what can you expect from a small little island.? Just chill in neigbouring cheaper and greener countries. For me, there is an even cheaper way to chill while stuck in the city: Meditate, daily.
If you know how to appreciate what you have, you will always be happy. If you dunno how to appreciate what you have, you will never be happy, anywhere, anyhow, anytime. Chill, life is too short to complain over small knocks. Just move on, the world is your oyster. Otherwise, shut up and meditate. You will find peace where it supposed to be : In your own heart.
Oh, one more thing. Desires don't always bring happiness. The more desires you have, the more stress you will get. Camels like to eat catus in the desert. They breed in their mouths eating cats, but they still love to eat the thorns. Desires are like catus. the less you have, the happier you will be. Don’t be a like a cow that’s tried to a tree that likes to roam round and round the tree. You will feel suffocated after a while. Roam less, sit and meditate more. Desire less, and you will be happier. If you want to desire, then desire for more peace, not more things.
easier said than done. try living in NY for a yr then comment.
@@erictay36 Why would I? I am happy in Singapore. Besides, I don’t have the means to live in NY.
In the end of the day, it also depends on your luck. If you are born in NY or work there, you have to find ways and means to be happy.
The universal rule is this: Keep desires as far away as possible. Live by your needs, not your wants. Things are just things, people are just people. They come and they go. Only God is real becos He is eternal. Everything else is transient.

Ya I don't get where the ILNY (I love NY) slogan comes from? From what I've seen it's a rundown crappy city with garbage everywhere. Ofc they do have their richer areas with skyscrapers...but they need to fix the nasty parts. Singapore is way better by comparison. Housing should be made affordable to everyone...here in Toronto, prices are insane...about 10 yrs ago they were affordable but now it's too expensive and rents are skyhigh...thanks to evil politicians.
I’m not a patriot because I cringe at myself for being overly protective of my country, but I am extremely grateful for everything we have. Having brought up by the boomer generation, I feel like a lot of millennials who are quick to criticise are just heavily influenced by the boomers, who have the tendency to just criticise and not stop to appreciate what we have. My eyes were opened after getting an outsider perspective in the form of my American fiancé who has never stopped singing praises of the country. However, housing is just too expensive here and I doubt we can ever own a home here especially with the criteria in place for locals with foreign spouses, sigh.
Even our northern neighbour has approached HDB for help.
What every commentator miss in admiring the wonderful state of Singapore public housing is the unacknowledged cost of achieving it. For the government to succeed in the early years, it put in legislation that allow it to buy/acquire private land at below market price en masse. The low cost of land is reflected in the cost of housing being offered, since all the buyers are doing is paying for the construction cost and a nominal sum on top of that. Though true in the early years, it is no longer true after the 1980's. Now the public housing is expensive because you pay for the land (acquire at very low cost) at market rate plus the construction cost.
I cannot imagine any modern democracy being able to do this in any other country. Such a massive wealth transfer from private hands to public would immediately trigger a mass revolt.
No other country has as limited land as Singapore, bare HK, Monaco and the Vatican.
I think every country can have a beautiful public neighborhood to live in, but the gov must first impose strict vandalizing laws, instead of i want my freedom law.
Hdb housing exterior's maintenence is managed by town councils. They manage day to day activities like general cleanliness, refuse collection, repair works etc.
