    I had the skank beat confusion in my youth playing drums too. It was Lars from Metallica, who all to often would play the beat the wrong way round, half way through a section, and the sometimes flip back again and sometimes not. Lombardo was perfect at it, and I just had to follow him to figure out what was going on. I am high on morphine pills right now due to broken knees, so I hope my message makes sense. But thanks goes to you for making this video, because I always had doubt about how the skank beat worked. Moellar system is the way too.

    The Moeller method, Moeller technique or whipping technique is a percussive stroke method that combines a variety of techniques with the goal of improving hand speed, power, and control while offering the flexibility to add accented notes at will. The method has been perceived in the drumming community as a secret method. It is considered difficult to learn and no consensus has been reached as to what this technique actually consists of...
    thank you once again Josh understanding how to incorporate two notes on a single stroke , down & up shows me a way to save time in making another stroke down....

    • @DethronerX
      @DethronerX 4 года назад +1

      @@xdfreaky9340 I also had the theory that maybe Lars just fucked up and played it reverse, but who knows lol. also when Aint My Bitch starts, you think it's going to be snare first but then that changes right away and you're like, wtf?. But there is so much punk about d beat and skank, but then in Death Metal, snare first also sounds badass at certain tempos. Like some Butchered At Birth songs
      I was also confused with Whiplash, thought it was snare first, because they played it faster on Live Shit, where I heard it first. When I heard the slower studio version, I was like, Fuck. I think sometimes Jason gets confused and sings over snare as downbeat but James is right on time.

    • @xdfreaky9340
      @xdfreaky9340 4 года назад +1

      DethronerX Lars’s weird kicking pattern doesnt really help either. But that snare first thing just fucks with me because its so fast and all i can hear is the snare hitting

    This was a really helpful video and couldn't agree more with what you said during the 6- 8 minutes.
    the same applies to blast beats for example (that is really just a "doubled" skank beat)... I know a lot of people try to learn to sync for example right hand with right foot in the beginning, and then have the left hand fill the gaps in between. What I found way more useful is, that you start with 16th on the snare, again locking right hand and right foot (or also left foot if you play with both on kick) and then let loose the right hand and play 8ths on hi-hat or ride... then you go into the next "level" so to speak, maintaining alternating feet and left hand 8ths on the snare and just applying accents to all kind of cymbals you want with the right hand... straight 8ths of the blasts, but also 4th notes, triplets, whatever comes to your mind... then try finding back into the 16th single stroke roll on the snare or the 8th between LH on snare and RH on ride or hi-hat. It is tricky, but helps to stay in the beat, while isolating this "ground" beat while playing other stuff with your right hand on toms or cymbals.

    Good advice Josh! I figured out it was the bass drum running the beat also. I also figured out to go to the bell or go to china or crash to ride the swell of the crash with slower hand motions if my wrist gets tired. Or break my right hand down to 8th notes or quarter notes. What ever gives my left hand a break! Love your your channel Bro!

    I think this "whole-counts" ride cymbal or hi-hat method is what I need to perfect this beat at speed. I think my pedal's fixed radius cam also has a lot to do with a disconnect from the bass part as well; I just have the basic Pearl P-121TW but I'm going to increase my footboard height tonight and see if that helps reduce this dead-zone that I'm feeling from this cam design.

    "kill em til you can't" by Anthrax. Man, that would be much appreciated if you could tackle something that fun. ;)

    I found it easier early on to play this one without playing the "upward" stroke on the hats/ride. Just basically playing the dominant stroke matching the bass drum. It's total cheating of course but it helped with getting the timing right at first. I've started throwing in those up strokes later on tho.
