  • In this video, my curiosity gets the better of me & I set out to discover what the food called “grits” is that Americans love so much, & subsequently end up down a much bigger rabbit hole.

Howdy from Oklahoma. You will usually only find grits in the Southern part of the US. It's more of a southern food, than an American food. It's a porridge made from coarsely ground corn meal. It can be savory or sweet, and is usually served with breakfast. Shrimp and grits would be an exception. I don't know anyone that would want shrimp for breakfast, but maybe some people do. I like grits but I don't eat them very often because of the carbs. I prefer grits with salt, pepper, and lots of butter. I occasionally eat grits with butter and honey. Cheese grits (grits with melted cheese) is another common way that people eat grits. For the record, the grits in that photo looked pretty dry and not very appealing.

Thank you! I think I may actually enjoy them with butter & a bit of pepper, or with cheese- anything with cheese has got to be good right!

@@CheekyKoala You're very welcome! Yep, you never know till you try. Just stay away from instant grits, they're not that great. And if you have a hard time finding grits in Australia, maybe you can find polenta (the Italian food). It's a good substitute if you can't find the real thing. :)

Oh, I don’t mind polenta, it’s not all that bad! Yes I’d imagine instant grits would be about as good as having instant mash potato- some things just shouldn’t be sold in “instant” form!

@@CheekyKoala Yeah, it's exactly like eating instant potatoes. It's edible, I guess, but not very good. I've made grits with polenta lots of times. So if you want to try it out, I'm sure there are plenty of videos on RUclips of people making grits. Just replace the grits with polenta and you'll be good. And I know that I'm biased, but if the person in the video making the grits doesn't have a southern accent, you probably should watch a different video. :)
Edit: By the way, grits are typically a side dish and served with something else such as bacon and eggs, for example. Grits on their own would be about as exciting as eating a can of corn for dinner.

You have never watched the Beverly Hillbillys in your life ,admit it. Grits and Jows was all they ate, with the exception of the special occasion Muskrat. Americans will eat anything if there is enough cheese or macaroni on it. I would not feed that breakfast to Mr fox, he would never come back. lol

Oh! I did watch the Beverly Hillbillies when I was young- I possibly never thought to question what grits were back then….
