Another great video! I’m still trying to turn and take off my clamp nut. It’s really stuck! Thank you for mentioning how heavy it is and showing how to support it when removing. If not a nick on the handwheel, it could also dent the table or give somebody underfoot a nasty bump.😮
I'm glad you commented. I've been trying o find your original comments about the clamp nut. I recently brought it up with a fellow restoration enthusiast and she told me about a method her son came up with and helps her with when needed. She has had a few of these mostly on the old black iron Singer models. He showed her how to put a piece of old leather belt around the nut and use a pipe wrench to turn it while he holds the handwheel steady. She said they come off "as easy as turning a door knob." Here is the $8 wrench she uses: www.harborfreight.com/14-in-steel-pipe-wrench-61349.html

I've been told what does not kill you makes you stronger. I'm not so sure about that.
Timely video, thank you! I finally got my stuck nut to turn so I could use the bobbin winder, but it became too loose. I’m following your directions to take it all apart and put it back together and see if that helps. So far the ring looks ok and the gear is ok too.
Thank you Mr. Andy! I have a 301A where the hand wheel “rocks” slightly, inside to outside. I thought once the “stop motion hand wheel” was reattached (washer was attached backwards when I got it!) it would stop this action. I’m going to take it apart again to make sure she’s got all her pieces installed correctly. Your video is super helpful!!
Thank you for this video. Great that you found a snap ring that would fit. I expected that you would have had to find an original from a parts machine. So glad you are making videos again!!! 😊😊
All I could find was a complete handwheel for sale. Too $$$. That 3/4"inch ring just barely fits, but once it's on it works just fine. One of the cheapest fixes I ever did, as you well know the cost of parts, etc. Thanks for the nice comment. It was an effort to make the video, but it was something I wanted to share. Hope you never need it though.
Another cornucopia of knowledge! I have a 421G that has a lot of play in the handwheel and the gear. Thanks to your video I now have an idea whats going on there. I bet that one part or the other is not correctly seated in the hole of that gear spring! And after seeing you take it apart and put it back together I dare to do that too 🙂 Thanks for sharing your great knowledge!
Thanks for watching. Model 421G is kind of a cross between the 401A & 500A. Sometimes the sping is different so you may find a double-coil sopring with the two ends bent at 90 deg. Those end insert into two small holes of the HW. I've had a couple viewers state that one of the bent end broke off on their spring and they lost the springy function. They had to make, or have someone make them a new spring. Hopefully your wont be that complicated. Good Luck.

I was just given a model 717 that is having some problems in the handwheel zone and I think this video will be helpful if nothing else for demonstrating how to take the assembly apart! (I bought the 'service manuals' but they do not discuss the handwheel or bobbin winder at all.) Thanks for the video!
I looked up my parts diagram and list for model 717 and the parts are very similar to my video so I think it may be helpful. Good luck, and I appreciate the comment.
Hi Andy! Love watching one of your videos along with my morning coffee. 😊 I am surprised that the gear wasn’t damaged from the snap ring being broken and hanging out in there. I have never run into that but I did have a hand wheel that was actually warped one time. If you laid it down on a flat surface it was very obvious but besides looking like it wobbled when it would spin it didn’t cause any issues. It must have happened at the factory, the paint was in pristine condition. Anyway, good to see you making lots of new videos!
Thank you! It's good to know the warped gear was not damaged. Maybe I could have used the 1-inch snap ring after all. It sure went on easier than the 3/4 inch. I could not get it to show in the video, but the end of the wide part of the counterbalance had some scratch marks from rubbing on the broken snap ring. The ring was all the way back into the cavity, well past the gear and I think that's was saved the gear from being damaged. I appreciate you watching.
Can't figure out how to share the photo but my textolite gear was flopping on the rod, but still engaging the motor gear enough to run. Runs perfectly now!
Glad you found the video. Nicely done to keep that machine in service. I appreciate yur comment. Yes, you can only load pics/video to your own channel.
Andy, Hello. Thanks for teaching me about vintage sewing machines. I really enjoy your videos. Many moons ago I purchased a Vintage Sanger Electric De Luxe made in Japan Sewing Machine in a queens cabinet. This came with a singer Class 15 user manual. The wire was all dried n damages, the wall plug was old. This was corrected to the today's std. After plugging the sewing machine the motor rans but the belt unit had to be replaced. So I changed that with a new singer belt. And since then the motor runs but the needles does move (manually or when pushing the knee paddle) very very slowly then stops. The feed dog is not moving, seems to me its locked in the bobbin mode! Even though we have turned the handle to sewing mode. My question is, can you think of what singer model was this machine duplicated from? So I can try to find a repair manual for it. And maybe you can shade some light on how this needle issue could be corrected ? Thanks in advance for educating me :) Sue
Most of the Japanese Singer clone machines were made after WWII and based on the SInger Modle 15. Some were based on Model 66 or 99 which had been made by Singer for decades. I was told the US Government actually gave the blueprints for Model 15 to them. I've had plenty of viewers tell me they can use Model 15 parts for repairing their clone model. Your problem may be as simple as the washer being placed backward on the machine which prevents firm clamping and engaging the arm shaft. I have bought machines that "won't sew anymore" for $10 and found the washer installed backward. Clean, oiled, replaced belt, and they worked fine. You can also search Google Images for "Black Singer Sewing Machine" and look for one like yours. When I can't find a free adjusters/service manual (often) I have bought a copy here:manualsoncd.com/product/singer-15-sewing-machine-service-manual/ Thanks for watching my channel.
I have a Singer 66-16 which stop motion washer's tabs were worn down too far to engage. Fortunately, I had another 66 from which I could borrow a washer to confirm the diagnosis.
How fortunate to have a spare for testing. The parts manual for Model 66-16 shows the Stop Motion Clamp Washer as Part No. 171502. That part was used on so many models over the years. When I look for a replacement I try to find a newer model thinking that it will have less "mileage" on it. Here is an example: www.vintagesingerparts.com/products/stop-motion-washer-part-171502-fits-models-327-328 Even though it shows model 327-328 it has the same part number. Thanks for all the machines you are working on. Take care.
