- Watch the brand new DJI FPV drone crash right into the exploding lava fountain of Iceland's newest volcano - Fagradalsfjall in the Geldingadalir valley. This unique HD footage provides a rare view right into the volcano's caldera and lava fountain during one of its geysir-like eruptions.
FPV drones are notorious for crashing, it is part of the hobby. So in an effort to get a unique vantage point and perspective into the crater we flew this remarkably capable drone as close to the lava river and caldera as possible. One of it turned out to be it's very last flight. At least the goggles record a great 1080p image allowing us to actually capture the last seconds the drone saw.

Forget the crashing into the volcano. That footage it took prior to crashing was what was spectacular. Without drones we wouldn't have video like that. I am in total awe of the power of that volcano and the technology that allowed us to see it.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, a second drone following filming in slow mo, to capture of the drone melted at all before it disappeared into the lava and was consumed. Amazing footage!!!

The thing is, this is not a massive amount of lava. It is only arojnd 13 cubic meters per second. That's compared to cubic kilometers (1 billion cubic meters) that can be released by truly massive volcanoes.

Great video until the end, but I mean the "sacrifice" in the end would have been avoidable and it doesn't really make sense to me. Why should you literally burn thousands of euros? Is that refinanced through additional likes? I do not think so.
Extraordinarily lucky when you take everything into account - it could easily have ended up in many other places where it could not be picked up. To you, it sounds like it was worth it. For me, it is definitely worth it.

how were you able to get better than fpv camera quality if the drone was destroyed. I am guessing you transmitted the high quality video wirelessly ? What method did you use?

The footage is incredible! I've got to ask, what was the planned maneuver at the end? Was it just to gain altitude and fly close over the top of the fountain and it just didn't climb?
I think the drone suffered already in a fatal way when it flew through the hot gases before entering the caldera. The heat from the magma must be incredible. Awesome footage.

I often wonder about the amount of lava that's spewing out. What happens to the space it leaves? Does it all just end up as underground caves or what, when it eventually cools.
@@myapinion7532 it doesn’t leave any space, as such. The tectonic plates are melted and that material is squeezed out at the surface as a lava flow. It solidifies, thus restoring the solid material that forms the outer crust of the earth. In practice, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but that is, roughly speaking, the process.

This comes closest to jumping into the volcano yourself, happy bit is the aftermath however, you are able to relive the moment over and over again and it doesn't hurt (maybe financially once).

Hey Joey, how were you able to recover the raw footage when the drone/sd card ultimately perished? Were you recording externally somehow aside from cached files? We have a client that want's us to fly through fire multiple times until the drone goes down, but we want to be able to capture the footage in the raw quality as well. Any tips would be appreciated! FYI: DJI drones etc.
Dji FPV records also a full HD feed in an SD placed in the goggles. You don't recover the RAW footage but still a usable quality one.

Once in a life time footage! I just wish you gained altitude near the end to give a view of the mouth from above and then went in. Knowing what I do about RCs I’m not surprised it only got that far with the heat that must be rising from it all. Amazing footage definetly worth it and I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets picked up to be used else where
