My favourite angler on the tube... Always does well where ever he goes unbelievable..I get that weight in july in my club match .. Like I said keeping my eyes & ears peeled this man is in for a big 1 Looking forward for more...👌👌
Wow that takes me back. We used to fish a drain where we had to sit freezing, twiddling our thumbs, until the pumping station fired up. When it had pumped a few inches from under the ice the whole lot would collapse, break up and float down like a scene from the Arctic. Easiest fishing of the year when we could finally cast, because it seemed every bream in the drain was always in the same 100 yard stretch (which is why we were there when it was still frozen over!)
Hardcore! What a great days fishing, tunnel barn farm is on my must visit venues this year, I watched your other ice breaker video as well today, respect is due Mr Arthur
@@JonArthur welcome mate, I just had to break ice first time, it was on the flyer silverfish qualifier and I couldn't move this morning for being so seized up lol
Had my match as well Tuesday, frozen over with no ice breaker so had to borrow friends but could only reach about 10 meters out. Lots of small silvers for me but where the ice was missing the others caught a few carp which put my decent bag of silvers in the shade. At least us old gits turned up for the match. Still enjoyed myself, well wrapped up and nice flask of hot chocolate kept me happy for the day. Thank you for posting. Made me think about a longer ice breaker with chain.
Made me feel cold just watching Jon, for the conditions it fished very well. My favourite venue in baltic conditions is, Earlswood lakes, fantastic F1 fishing, well worth a visit
I was fishing the AT Silvers Qualifier at Barston on the same day. The lake was totally iced and ice breaking for everyone. Didn’t get a single bite! So your match was out of this world in comparison, lol. Well done, Jon on a great result.
really enjoyed that Jon so thanks.Beats the last 24 hours on the Thames for two chub bites. Can't beat a night or two at boring goring but when the water bottle freezes in the bivvy you know it bloody cold. Looking forward to more.
Well fished Jon, fished the canal at shipton on Cherwell this morning, had to break the ice as well. Three biteless hours later it was home time !!!! Even half a pinkie didn’t work !!!
Great video, this. Being a fair weather club angler(our matches stop in December and start again in March), I happily don’t have to experience this,so very interesting to see what you lads have to put up with and do.
@@JonArthur always enjoy learning and watching tunnel barn I fished my first match last year in the Fish O qualifier really enjoyed it only caught 20lb but was a fantastic experience will be hopefully doing the same again this year
@@JonArthur really tough day for me, although looking back I think I did a few things wrong, and a few more fish would’ve really turned the result around 👍🏼
Great video again bud and well fished, made breaking the ice and getting cold worth it. Saw Des Ship had 87lbs, must have been on them start to finish if they were the same size as yours.
Des was over the other side on peg 27 on a ball of the big old F1s, which average 2-3lb, while I was on the nursery! I'd bet we had a similar number of fish! :-)
The lake fished weird that day. 7 9 and 21-27 normally boss pegs. Shipp destroyed it off 27 and 30 was 2nd, but that was also where the biggest sheet of ice was between 27 and 30, so food for thought...
Considering the Ice breaking a decent match weight Jon. Unfavoured area delivered the goods. I think having class anglers will some times make these pegs do better because of the feeding/rotating regime. Well done plus good team points.
Hey Jon watching all these films in prep for 1st match on Sunday, what line diameter do you use? 0.12 main to 0.09 hook to an 18 f1 maggot is what I am making up with 4x10 ,4x12 and 4x14 f1 Maggot floats ,you think thats ok?
Thats totally fine, but I personally prefer (a true) 0.14 for winter commercials as its more durable and less tangle prone and less likely to lose the entire rig if a carp does you
Jon your edits are so slick now, really enjoy your content. They make me want to fish more, and get much better at it. Can I ask why you changed pole today?
Thanks Steve, I always get out the MTX2 pole pole if i might be shoving or sawing ice and didn't see any need to pack it away and set the MTX4 up afterwards as only fishing 13m 👍
I always get the MTX2 out when popping my ice pusher about and shifting ice sheets and potentially sawing through ice with the pole. As I was only fishing 13m didn't see need to get the MTX4 out.
I got my MTX2 out as it's the pole I prefer to poke sheets of ice around with and as I was only fishing 13-13.5m all day I didn't see any need to get the MTX4 out.
Another great video and match, well done Jon, thats a neat trick with the bottles Iv'e never seen that before, I did notice you were not using your MTX4 today was that because of the extra strength with moving ice ? and what you mentioned about them kiting off under the ice is my worst fear I ususally end up dipping the pole under the water but it can be hazardous with water freezing in the pole, do you treat your elastic with anything or just keep checking it constantly?
We thankfully don't tend to get many days where the elastic is freezing while we fish, or ice holes refreezing back over. Best advice is to use old Slik elastic rather than hollows in extra cold water as hollows don't work correctly. Yep used the MTX2 as I might be pushing ice about etc.
Not a lot stealthy when it comes to ice breaking, but a key a lot of people overlook is to break yours first then let your peg settle while everyone else does there's. Hopefully they'll then be pushed back into your peg! ;-)

Thickest I've very had to break is 5-6in with chest waders and a hammer! That wasn't fun, but I had over 300 roach afterwards for a match win, so worth the effort! People were sat on the ice that day...

That was a lovely watch Jon , this was such a good day for the middle of a frosty January. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
I once seen my mates uncle fishing in ice water I thought he was nuts another brilliant video John thanks for the upload
Glad you enjoyed it
Good tip about using a bottle of water for ice breaking I always learn something watching your videos cheers John!
Glad you enjoyed it Reg
Amazing days fishing considering the ice and temp. Great video.
Thanks, most venues fished better that weekend after a bit of ice breaking 👍
Great vid john you give so much on how and were to fish every time 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
love watching you fish john .really inspires me to start again
Thanks Dave, do it! 👍
Did enjoy it immensely Jon , great watch 👍

Can't believe how well it fished after breaking the ice.Thought you fished really well Jon,great tuition as always.

I will try! 👍👍

Barston is the worst venue in the world after sudden weather changes and cold weather as it is so shallow. Rarely fishes through the ice.
Thats what you call dedication Jon.well done.I am looking forward to watching you when the Thames festival starts.
Thanks for watching Peter
Well done Jon , and a very enjoyable video.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great result keep it up
Thank you! Cheers!
Well done Jon good days fishing in tough conditions

Fair play Jon, showing some dedication there!

Oh dear! Still nice to be beside a river, even when the tips not moving and the water bottle's freezing! 👍
Well done Jon lad, great ice breaking technique.
It was an OK effort. I've broke better holes!
Nice one Jon, fished yesterday breaking ice had a lovely day

Nice one David 👍
Super video as usual Jon. Love it when they come up on my notifications. You’re getting a bit good at this. 😀
I try my best! Thanks for watching 👍
Nice one Jon. I fished the Barston qualifier, 1 fish won our 15 peg qualifying section! The rest of us blanked including Alan Scotthorne!
I am not surprised. Barston in winter being just 3ft deep is a shocker of a venue when the mercury drops!
Well done in those conditions
Thanks John 👍
well done Jon,, tough conditions
Cheers Denis
Fair play Jon cracking day under the circumstances I'm fishing a match in club pool Sunday wish me luck 👍
Ooh could be a tough one but Club can be great some days. Best of luck! 👍👍👍

Good angling John. Thought the weights would be a lot lower how cold it was. Pity the stamp of fish wasn't a lot bigger. Well done mate. 😃🐬🐬
Some areas they'll always be bigger than others, but nice to be getting some bites!
I wish but for still breaking the ice even today, thick layer but that’s the joy of fishing I guess..

I use Skeetex, but you must get a size bigger as you need air space, plus they are not great if you are walking far.

im surprised they are so shallow accross
wouldnt they be in the deeper warmer water?
Clearly not ha ha, but 4ft and ft of water across on a snake lake is a good depth
Do you ever fish using a reel and rod? Interested to know, or am i stuck in the 80s and sea fishing (which is my thing)
Check out the other vids on my channel...
