I have played for 35 years now and prior to 2 weeks ago, never got cut. It happened in a open hockey type session. I reached out while turning around the crease, lost an edge, and cut my own wrist. It didn't go deep enough, but absolutely scared the hell out of me, especially driving home to my family. Freak accidents can happen, but if my kids play, i fully believe in giving them full equipment plus the advanced protection they offer now.
I’ve played since I was 4. When I was 10 and 11 I had my same finger stepped on each year with a skate lmao. Still have a scar from the second one. I remember them hurting a lot but I think that’s just because of my age. I wear everything except a neck guard. Those things make me overheat in 30 seconds. All the heat trapped in under your jersey only has one play to escape but if you wear a neck guard it stays in your neck and helmet. Plus I’ve gotten my neck cut by the guard itself about 3 times but never by a skate so I just hate them. They manage to make you feel like you’re wearing heavy equipment even thought it’s a flimsy piece of fabric that doesn’t do anything anyway.
@f_homo-s I don't wear a shirt underneath, but I do laugh thinking about playing in the 90s with the mandatory cotton neck guard below peewee. At least now a days they have legit protective material in them. I meant to order wrist guards but want to try them on first. Local shop doesn't have any.
@@justinthomas85 I tried to wear wrist guards a few times but I couldn’t really ever get used to it. Slashing isn’t as much of an issue anymore so I don’t wear them but I used to tape my wrists instead it’s much more comfortable
@f_homo-s yea, I was looking into them solely for the cut protection. Staring at my wrists on my way home to my family was pretty sobering at the time. I don't know how much deeper it would have needed to be to be extremely bad, but it couldn't have been much more.
In high school, we used to play student/teacher hockey once a week. One of our Science teachers took a skate exactly like that across his cheek. You could see the bone. It sure ruins the mood of the game. Needless to say that teacher wore a full face mask after that incident.
Wow. and it'll still cut through a red, ripe tomato. *[throws a tomato at Slafkovsky's foot]* Isn't that something, folks? These Ginsu blades are really cutting-edge...
its crazy to think full face shields/cages are illegal unless a player was injured. its stupid you do something after injury but prevent guys from taking preventative measures to protect themselves. on another note youd think the nhl would mandate neckguards but nope its left up to the individual player they wont madate neckguards until someone in the nhl actually dies
In honour of Jack Edwards announcing his retirement (I say honour but really it's not) from broadcasting, could you do a video of all the times he's been a biased POS? 😅
what an idiotic comment.... smae thing = accident on ice at high speed. Was here for comment from lowbrainpowered bringing back the Johsnon accident as example. Both were accident you clown.
It sounds ridiculous and is probably impossible, but I feel like players need to be instructed to try to keep their feet down as much as possible even when falling.
was here for the comments about the guy trying to decapitate with a kung fu kick.... and the i played 40 years and never saw a skate up that high that was a deliberate kick....
Damn, that was pretty close and could have gotten much worse. Glad it seems like he's all right.
call a 3rd man penalty on him ... raccoon
next time #Newfrance #detroit #nfldraft

How the hell do you cut your own wrist with your own skate???
holy cow. Hope he's ok.

Glad he was still there to carry a mask
Miss him on Colorado! Hope he’s ok!
Those are always so scary.
wow so close, J.T got lucky holy crap
Clean shave. More dangerous out there than getting slashed in a NYC subway.
Got patched up and went right the fuck back out there. Hockey players are just different
I got hit il the mouth with a skate once I just took myself off the ice straight away mid game
Holy shizzle! Close call
Got stitched up and came back. Whole team played hard to the finish, only to be cheated by Bettman in the end.
Still don't understand why we traded him. GO AVS GO
He channeled his inner Matt Petgrave with that spin kick.
3rd man in penalty #newfrance #Quebec #michigan
Luckily not a Richard Zednik type of incident
He came back with stiches in his nose. So damn close to being a terrible end though

Agreed, need to get rid of outdated attitudes aswell. Hockey players are plenty tough, using decent protection is not gonna change that
I guess they want people to see the player's faces. Marketing and $$ > player safety

Omg JT got lucky

Yikes
This is an acceptable scenario to have ur skates in the air, not like the Adam Johnson "freak accident"

But skates don’t come up that high?
Clearly they do moron
Just like NFL FG Kickers can’t punt a 30 yard field goal
