The issue isn't trashing it once you have it. At that point, money has already changed hands, and you've funded whoever good/bad/neutral actors you're going to fund by buying those PC parts. The point of the video is to say: If people actually cared about this exploitation - and in a way, if they even had the ability to care about it - the only way to take a stand would be to simply not buy the items in question.
There's no need to trash your PC even if it funded a warlord for example, because you've already indirectly paid that warlord by buying those parts, and trashing it would likely just equate to giving said (theoretical) mineral-hoarding warlord more money if you wanted to build another PC. Will we all give up the comfort and convenience of some of these things (i.e. PCs, smartphones) and stop buying them in the future, even if it helps humanity in general? Probably not.

The point of consumers not caring about where things come from easily carries over to people not caring about each other.
People "care" about others, people say they care about others. But do people go out of their way to actually help others? Generally no. Just as asmongold says there are exceptions to this as there are with anything, but the 99% majority wouldn't go out of their way if it was any detriment to them to help others.
Perfect example is the male loneliness/dating epidemic. People say they care, people say they want to help, but really they don't care or want to help.

    • @secretagent4610

problem is also that most people are afraid to help others, partly out of fear of danger or loss of personal capital (which lets face it, it's not going to get a lot better in the future) but also fear of rejection or worse accusation of some ism or phobia ''what you think x needs help from a y? what are you Z?'' even though it's very unlikely that that would happen, people experience the world in different ways, they have different ways of how they experience the world and since a lot of people have gotten a poor education, divourced parents, few dating experiences, mental illness or people just teaching them false things about the world and people, so they don't even know how to be compassioned or open to others, they aren't even open to themselves.
how do you solve the male loneliness/dating epidemic? you can't please everyone and bringing change means people who don't like change will be upset, it becomes a power dynamic, which in essence come down to male power projection vs female power projection and men have largely been poorly socialized, where as woman have been over-socialized, there is also the conflict of past generations dominating politics so there is a generational conflict as well.
once the generational conflict ends (as old people die off) the power dynamics will become just male vs female and then it could come down to who is able to use and manipulate the most force, it could get nasty, it won't manifest exactly like this but the rise of far right and far left political ideologies, are a sign of things to come.

Almost all the evidence we have suggests that no in fact things would likely get worse. This shouldn't be seen as a justification of what goes on, nor does it absolve people in the west from profiting off of it. But it does highlight the difficulty of directly helping those affected. Even if you could indeed boycott those products, the evidence suggest that too would be selfish on your part; you're more or less trying to assuage your guilt, while not actually helping the people being exploited. I very much DO care what happens to these people and think it's abhorrent. But I not only can't stop it, it's impossible for an American in 2024 to not contribute to it in some way.

imo, digital "art" is not art. That solves the problem. I don't even consider film photography to be art, though I used to. I fully realize this is highly arguable. For instance, is what Andy Warhol used to do (photo silkscreen, and manufactured art, symbolized by repetition) art? The art world sure thinks so. But then where's the boundary?

    • @gravelpit5680
      @gravelpit5680 7 месяцев назад

@genestone4951 I agree. The boundary is raw media, hand made, no printers. Sure, graphic artists exist, but they also employ an arsenal of software that grants immunity from error and anonymity from actual construction. Furthermore, art isn't subjective. It's scrutinized by THE Elements and Principles of Design ie Balance, Depth, Contrast, Value, Directional Movement, Color etc... so if we actually apply that basis of standard, the works of Picasso, Pollock and others FAIL miserably. The fact is, much of what is called "art" today is anything other than art, especially anything that could be called GOOD art.
The painting Nighthawks by Hopper is a wonderful example of REAL, GOOD Art. An example of fake art is anything made by art software and them dumped out of a printer. The "artist" is incapable of actually making a real oil on canvas painting. This was already a major problem 15 years ago, but now you have people who couldn't even draw a stick figure, using fancy "AI" software, and they think they're artists and want the rights to the trash a computer made. It's ridiculous

Yes, they'll engage in the same practices that the evil companies engaged in. This happens all the time. Think cocacola, disney, nestle, etc.

There's a reason the quote, "For evil to win, all good has to do is nothing" exists.
Going by this logic we wouldn't have people helping those in need within their community. If you can't even do that, then how can you expect to do anything for those who are thousands of miles away?
The world is a dark depressing place, but we still have the power to be a light in it and there are billions of us. Even if individually, our light may be dim, combined, we can be brighter than anything.

I haven't watched Asmongold ; but judging by this snippet of a clip, I think he and this video paints a gross oversimplification of the issue. Are most western consumers really purchasing the cheaply manufactured products of these metals due to a lack of caring about the abused and exploited populations in other places or is it simply because living paycheck to paycheck barely having enough for basic necessities (continued rise in $$ costs of housing, food, automobiles and rent); doesn't afford them any other alternatives. The truth in all likelihood, is that it's probably a mixed bag. These E-personality streamer types have the luxury of being able to contemplate these questions largely due to the circumstances of a high-income socio-economic status they've been allotted due to a combination of variables, most of which if we're being honest, had nothing to do with them. In other words, if we're using Maslow's Hierchy of Needs; people like Asmongold would be placed at the very top of the pyramid(self-actualization). It's going to be hard contemplating questions over grandeur moral dilemmas when you're commuting and working 60+ hours a week to just barely have enough to keep a roof over your head. I think this is only half-true. You're not taking into consideration tribalism. Our "camp" would be the close family and friends, our "band" is Dunbar's number of friends/coworkers/etc., and our "tribe" is a symbolic group (traditionally around 1000-2000 people, but much larger these days) that enables large-scale cooperation and acts as a hedge against genetic stochasticity/"bad luck" genetic drift (Both Alison Brooks and David R. Samson have written about this in more depth than I could). Tribe could be religious, nationalist, an ethnolinguistic group, etc. but is typically based upon symbols of some sort.
People care about people they identify with, otherwise nobody would complain about these things in the first place. It's not so much "people don't care unless something affects them," it's "people don't care unless something affects them or theirs." For example, Asmongold doesn't play any of the Yakuza games, or watch Lovely Complex, but he identifies with gamers and anime fans in general, so to him, it becomes an important issue. In his video about woke translators in video games, he even suggests that people should stop buying those games. Contrast this with his views on AI art: Asmongold does not identify with artists, so to him it's a nonissue that only crazy people care about. However, I think it is possible to identify with larger groups of people than even that, even if it is uncommon. This seems to be the whole premise of organizations like Doctors Without Borders, where people may risk their lives to ensure that people in conflicts all over the world receive medical care. In essence, a "global tribe." Most people do not genuinely identify with this kind of global tribe, even if they idealistically think that they do.
This is part of why some "impersonal" boycotts are successful. For example, the 1791 sugar boycott in England was largely successful. It was led by the highly religious (e.g: tribal) Quakers who were protesting sugar made from slaves. None of the Quakers were personally impacted by slavery, and it's unlikely that any of them would be personally familiar with slaves on the other side of the world. However, the ethics/morals of the Quakers at that time were a strong tribal symbol for them, so by boycotting, you would be signalling your allegiance to the Quaker "tribe." Importantly, they pushed it into a nondenominational issue, to the extent that half a million people, most of which were not Quakers, were boycotting sugar made by slaves. They did this by framing it as an issue for British society, talking about the dangers of consumerism and "modern consumption." So then, instead of antislavery just being a Quaker tribal signal, it became a British tribal signal.
I hope this doesn't get buried! It's clear that you've researched your stuff, and I don't totally disagree with your conclusions, but I think that you're missing a very important piece of the human puzzle.

This guy watches other people's drama for a living. His opinion on the human experience should be held in the same regard as a slug.

He just seems like another Destiny. A gamer that spouts the same superficial crap most younger content creators do.
The reason why I think people don't care is because we ultimately create our problems. Even if you removed someone from their issues they would only repeat the same patterns. Most of us won't try or even attempt to try to better our lives. We quit before we start.

I believe yeah in a way that’s life we create our own problems but sometimes we don’t create our problems look at how the housing prices have gone high is it gen zs fault they can’t get enough money to buy a house nope of course not the stereotype of living in you moms house doesn’t matter anymore because people are in the same situation if something impacts people all together best believe another revolution will happen

Everything is about money. It’s always the solution, the problem, and the bottom line and I hate it. Money is the root of all evil
