These old BBC productions are far better than the new movies. I find CG in so unimaginative. The music is far more moody and beautiful in the old ones, and everything was shot for real.
In the books, Aslan responds to Lucy's querie about him telling them how to get his country from our world by saying "I shall be telling you all the time - dear heart". I think it's the most beautiful way of saying that "Aslan's Country" (whatever your beliefs make that out to be) is always all around us ...IS us and the world we choose to create in our mind and actions. He's saying that Spirit IS this "life" thing we're experiencing, and happening continuously all the time. I love that. :)
The scene with the person trapped on the island with your worst dream/fear is a good one. This scene even now after a few decades after it was first broadcast, and an adult audience, this is the scene that could resonate fear, because it can be of your mind which you can't always control- you could always persuade yourself later on, how silly the character costumes look, and can understand things in a different perspective later.
He was in the presence of THE Holy One Himself. It is enough to be moved to tears, and he was crying because he was parting ways with his close friends.
At the end Lucy was crying and said that shes upset because she will never see Aslan anymore, it was like "Goodbye my love goodbye" in the Disney version. I cried too. And mother said it looks like last part. Narnia without Lucy is not the same, i missed her a lot in the later books
I know what you mean, I think Jill Pole is a similar character to Susan in some ways, she has a similar kind of older sister or mother vibe but she doesn’t really have Lucy’s innocent sense of wonder.
That was wonderful; I just finished reading the fifth book. I won't watch The Silver Chair until I read it. I have a collection of fantasy novels myself.
Yes, I understand what you are saying. I wonder if that could be presented in a way that illuminates that issue in a positive way, a way that encourages awareness and to embrace a way of seeing all of us as being integral to each other, rather than Lewis' tendency to create those undertones. I just feel there is so much energy in that book that it could make a stand-alone film which could be very impactful if treated in a universally inclusive way. Thanks for that comment. :)
Imfpassion, do you mean at the end of Voyage? She's in America with her parents. Only Lucy and Edmund are staying with Eustace. Peter is studying with Professor Kirke. If you are talking about Narnia, both Susan and Peter are too old to return for the Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Their last visit was in Prince Caspian.
Lucy better cry at the end of the new one when aslan tells her she's not coming back, and she had better cry HARD. because it stinks how in this one she barely flinches when Aslan tells her.
hey! literary connection! Prince Caspian marries the daughter of a fallen star, and in the book "Star Dust" by Neil Gaiman, the hero marries a fallen star! And Neil Gaiman wrote a story about Susan from the Chronicles.
i got it when i watched for the first time... didnt imagine it was anything else. i saw that Aslan wold not let the raising the stone knife again against him (his table) wouldnt not go unpunished, and serve as a lesson, so to speak...
BUT ... they never did come back to Narnia. Eustace, Jill, Tyrian, Puzzle, Ehmet, Poggin come through the stable door. The Pevensies are already there, killed in the train accident. Remember when Aslan tells Peter to close the door, once he has ended Narnia? :) The Narnia they find as they follow Aslan 'further up and further in' is connected to England, and they see their parents. They are not in "Narnia", but in the world beyond that is bigger and contains all ... or "Heaven" if you like. :)
My interpretation is along the same lines. I don't have the book with me here, so it may have been a choice of the writers in this series, but I wonder if the lines Aslan utters here calling him Prince rather than King might also allude to the idea that in the Universe, we are all Princes and Princesses ... and that our 'Higher Power', whatever it may be for each of us ... is the King or Queen self. Just a thought :)
Yeah but after the first two books your never quite sure where that ex machina will come in. Will they solve the problem themselves or will Aslan have to come in and smack some heads around with his paw?
I used to like everything of the new Narnia series but the 3rd one is so disappointing. The ending scene of this version is way better and close to the book.
In the book Susan becomes vain and forgets Narnia she thinks it was just a pretend game. Read the books they are wonderful and there is so much more to the stories.
It would be wonderful to make the remaining films for their books, not the audience. The Horse and His Boy is a rich story that could be done elegantly on screen. I realize that Last Battle would entail expensive special effects, as would The Magician's Nephew ... yet it seems sort of cursory to make only the films involving the Pevensies. Each book has the spirit of the characters in it. To focus on just the Pevensies takes away from the breadth that Lewis created. Just saying .... :)
Oh, and for the record, the new Aslan kicks this Aslan's butt infinitely plus infinite infinities over! Neelson rules Aslan, and whichever team designs him (as well as Reep and the other Narnians) rule, too!!
Oh, come on! They skipped the whole '...For, I am the Great Bridge Builder...' part and '...But there I have another name...' part! That's one of my favorite parts of the entire book! How rude! :(
@bluetitmi6 Yeah that's fair enough but i dont think what i said deserved to be called bs. I cant argue it though because thats the way movies are going now.
@jd518 becaue hair colour can pass a generation Caspian's father, or mother, may have had black hair, and it could have passed to Rilian. It'slike eye colour, it can miss a generation
@BFMachine that's utter BS, cinema is moving forward and great tools like CGI allow film-makers to create just about anything they want on screen. Just imagine how incredible the new Narnia movies could have been if they had better scripts and a more visionary production crew. Because the new Narnia films do feel like they like personal vision. Just compare the new Aslan to other CGI characters like Gollum, King Kong or Davy Jones, he's just terribly boring and it's not because of the CGI.
This is a good movie but the music is like the church one!!!!!!!!!!!! this versions stick to the book verry closely, i love the narnia books and movies but i love the new versions better, here aslan opens one time the mouth and he says allot of scentenses!!!!! come on!!!!!!!! but this movie r good =)

the music is so wonderful. it recites the poem which reepicheep heard as a baby. but its in song. its gorgeous.

I never thought Caspian could cry .
Any one can cry. Even the most bravest and strongest men.
He was in the presence of THE Holy One Himself. It is enough to be moved to tears, and he was crying because he was parting ways with his close friends.
Aw I loved every minute of that! I can't wait to see how the new movie turns out. :)
Thank you so much for posting this - I'd only seen the part when they found Lord Roop. :)
At the end Lucy was crying and said that shes upset because she will never see Aslan anymore, it was like "Goodbye my love goodbye" in the Disney version. I cried too. And mother said it looks like last part. Narnia without Lucy is not the same, i missed her a lot in the later books

... I cry every time I see Reep go to Aslan's country.
they should so do the magicians nephew in this style, would be so goooood
Goodbye to you all and thanks for everything. Lifetime.
I kind of have to grin to myself when Aslan says they will never come back... Because if you read the Last Battle... Well... You know.
Great music!
i really wish that Lucy and Edmund could have come back to narnia a fourth time
This whole story can be summed up in three words: Aslan ex machina.
Their last visit was in Prince Caspian.
ditto! i've always loved that scene.
Lucy better cry at the end of the new one when aslan tells her she's not coming back, and she had better cry HARD. because it stinks how in this one she barely flinches when Aslan tells her.
This episode was on christmas eve 1989

it's odd as they mention it in silver chair when they venture to the giants. i never realised it was missing before...
oh! that's in the Silver Chair!!
I so agree, my friend!
:-)

Good attempts!

Happy Ending.

Aslan is a picture of Jesus Christ, resurrected. All who believe in Him are kings.
oh my god the mouse :P
LOL @ "Reepicheep."
Yeah but after the first two books your never quite sure where that ex machina will come in. Will they solve the problem themselves or will Aslan have to come in and smack some heads around with his paw?
yeah!! me too :D

Are there some parts that have been cut off? The last video ended with them entering the dark fog.
Sorry if this has been answered already!
In the book Susan becomes vain and forgets Narnia she thinks it was just a pretend game. Read the books they are wonderful and there is so much more to the stories.

Well, the new one put at least most of that line in!
Did they skip the whole mermaid countryside scene??? Now that's rude.
the fact that it was an allusion to Christ being Aslan is probably why they took it out. Shame, though.
I'm sure those animated birds were shot for real too. >_>
@bluetitmi6 Yeah that's fair enough but i dont think what i said deserved to be called bs. I cant argue it though because thats the way movies are going now.
I know ... just playing around ;)
Wouldn't that be specist? :)

Yes it's a shame the bbc stopped after the silver chair.
it's BBC what did you expect?
Technicalities......
Being racist against mice is a sin

cs lewis and this film series are 8th rate compared to tokein.
Also the issue with Horse and His Boy is the racist undertones regarding the portrayal of the Calormenes
